Chapter Nine
Video is really powerful. Please watch. :D
09 - 24 - 15
Am I sleeping on a heating pad? I think opening my eyes and look at Sam. Nope, just a warm guy. I grab my phone and turn it on to see the time. 4:02am. Great, yearly bird today. I look at my bad hand and scowl. I wish I could take the cast off. I look down at Sam. He has his arm around me and I'm almost completely on top of him. How he can sleep with me on him? I know I'm not really heavy, but still. I turn my phone on again and put a password on it. After doing that I go to YouTube and start playing random videos. Might as well kill time and it's not like I can read.
I'm watching a stupid cat video and trying not to laugh, but failing miserably. I have my hands over my mouth trying not to be too loud. Sam stirs and pulls me closer to his chest. I didn't know that was possible, but he proved me wrong. I feel heat rush to my cheeks and then he opens his eyes. "What's so funny?" He asks in a groggy voice.
"A video. Sorry didn't mean to wake you." I say pausing the video. He must have realized he was holding me because his cheeks get pink and let's go.
"Can I watch with ya?" He asks and I nod my head.
"How did that guy survive that?" Sam says in disbelieve. We ended up watching horrible accidents that people survived.
"No clue," I say watching it again.
"Lucky guy." He says and I nod my head. Hours and hours pass before we get up and ready.
"Corrine you're late." Carols says her arms crossed over her chest. I walk further into the beautiful woods and stand in front of her.
"Sorry, we lost track of time," I say and Sam walks up behind me. Carol rolls her eyes and motions for me to follow her. I do and smile because Sam sticks his tongue out at her.
We don't walk for long, but when Carol stops two other people are there. "They will be working with you today and I will supervise. I think you're ready for this, show me I'm right." She says before nodding at the two. There is a boy and girl. They are both tall. The girl has dark brown eyes, her hair is up in a ponytail, and she's wearing active clothes. The boy also has brown eyes and hair, he looks slightly on edge, but yet scary.
They both walk towards me and I send a questioning look at Carol. She doesn't do anything, just watches. The girl calls me a slut and then pushes me to the floor. Is this a test? I get back up, but then the boy pushes me down. They start circling me and saying rude things. The feeling starts to rise, but I push it back down. The girl hits my shoulder, but I block it out and stand back up. I go to walk away, but the boy blocks my way. This has to be a test. I remind myself. He pushes me into the girl and she pushes me back at him. I go back and forth before ending on the ground. I get up once again but am pushed back and send a rock at both of their feet. They both grab their feet jumping and complaining. Carol then begins walking down to us.
"I didn't break anything," I say and Carol smiles a little. "Are you ok?" I ask them and they nod their heads. They stand up walking towards me.
"You did good, but remember you can't use your gifts in the real world." The boy says and extends his hand. I shake it and nod my head. The girl smiles and comes up to me.
"Good job. Your getting really good with earth bending. Keep it up." She says and gives me a hug. I pat her back before they both start walking away. Then Carol comes up to me clapping.
"You're getting good. Did you know it was a test?" She asks and I nod.
"Kinda figured. Why else would you two watch as they did that." I say looking over at Sam.
"True, I'm done for today so have fun." She says before running off.
"We need to go meet with Sarah," Sam says and starts walking through the branches. I follow close behind.
When we get there Sarah isn't the only one there. What's with so many different people today?
"Corrine, Hunter is going to train with you today. He knows more and this will be your last day of earthbending if everything goes as planned." She says and walks over to some rocks. Sam nods his head and walks over to the rocks as well.
"I'm Hunter as she told you. I'll be teaching you some things, but testing you a lot more, so be prepared." He says before a rock comes at me. I easily dodge it and then two more come. I turn them back at him and he breaks them. It's harder to do with one hand, but I'm managing.
"Has anyone ever taught you how to earthbend except for us?" Hunter asks. I shake my head and he gives me a confused look. Then he makes the ground under me move. I shoot a rock at him and he dodges it. We do things like this for quite a while.
"This is rare and you're using one hand. You're really good for such little training. You have passed. You don't need to train with earthbending, but if you ever have any question just ask." He says and I nod my head. He walks away and Sarah walks up to me.
"You're lying, aren't you. You can't know this much without being taught it's just not right." Sarah says crossing her arms.
"I don't know what you're talking about," I say back and she laughs.
"Everyone else may be blind, but when Jake finds out you lied you're in for-"
"Shut up Sarah and leave us alone," Sam says and Sarah glares at him.
"It's going to hit you that hardest because you're falling for her." She says before storming off. If she only knew that I'm falling for him, not the other way around. Why would she even think that? Maybe she's trying to mess with me. Whatever, just ignore her. I tell myself before looking up at Sam.
"Let's go try to control water," I say and start walking. Sam looks dazed but then starts following me.
"I VERY MUCH HATE WATERBENDING." I scream frustrated. Sam laughs and I glare at him. I shoot both my hands at him and surprisingly the water goes where I want it to and he ends up in the pond. "I did it," I say astonished looking down at my hands. Sam resurfaces it and trudges out of the water.
"Of course you could do it when it involves me going into a pond." He says shaking his head. Water droplets go everywhere and I smile. He looks up at me and shakes his head. Once he gets the water off of him he walks towards me. I smile up at him. He picks me up and throws me over his shoulder.
"Put me down," I say loudly at him and pound on his shoulder. I know it won't help, but it makes me feel better.
"Not happening." He says and before I know what's happening water surrounds me. I push off the ground and swim to the top. Should have known he would have done that. I break through the water and take deep breaths. I glare at him and he smiles back at me. I swim until I feel the slimy ground. Walking out of the pond I walk up to Sam and give him a big hug. "Hey." He says and backs away from me. I smile and start walking up to the building. I hear Sam walk up behind me.
"I have dirt on me now." He says wiping his chest. Ha, you may get the water off, but you still are dirty.
"Good and I don't want to hear it," I say and he laughs.
"You started it." He says and I huff. Such a child.
When we get to the building I quickly take a shower and walk back to the room. Sam's in there with only a towel around his waist. "Having troubles?" I ask trying not to laugh. He stands up and looks at me.
"I forgot to do laundry." He says before he starts looking through his backpack again. I shake my head and sit on the cot. I grab my phone and play smash hit. I get to level 11 and then run out of balls, which pisses me off.
When Sam finally finds some clothes we walk down to the dining room. Some of the building has come back, but there's still far more to be done. I wonder when everyone will have rooms again. Sam and Matt sit down across from Carol and I then plop down. I'm glad it was my left arm that broke, having to do everything without my right would have been harder than now.
Throughout eatting, Sam and I don't talk much with the others. I pay attention and laugh, but I really don't say much. Sam on the other hand just talks to Matt or stares at his plate.
When I finish I say goodbye to everyone and put my tray away. I walk back to the room and Ashley messages me. Don't forget
25-Sit ups
20-Pushups
25-Squats
15-Burpees
Run half a mile
50-Jumping Jacks
Mountain Climbers for a minute
Wall sit for a minute
She's has told me this every day for the past week and a half. "Ughh." I really don't want to do it again. I message her back and say that I'll start it soon. I lay on the cot and let my mind wander through different things.
"Guess what we are going to do?" I hear Sam's voice. I turn towards him and he's got a big grin plastered on his face. This can't be good. "We get to start your workout today." He responds in an excited voice. I close my eyes and shake my head. "It's not that bad and you've done it how many times now." I hear him say while laughing. He then grabs my hand and pulls me up and off the cot. I open my eyes and he pulls me into the hallway. Glad we are at the end and no one really comes down here. "25 sit ups." He says and gets into the position. I huff and follow. "Count out loud and I will go with your pace."
"1...2......25." I push out and fall back to the ground. My stomach aches.
"Not too bad. 20 push-ups. Come on." He says and once again gets into the position.
"This sucks." I put my hands into fits because I can't bend my wrist and start doing the pushups.
"5...4...3...2...1. Done." Sam says and I sink to the floor. My arms and legs feel like jello and my breathing is fast. Stupid mountain climbers.
"Only one more thing," Sam says in a positive voice. I look up at him and then he says what I was hoping I wouldn't have to do. "Half mile run. Just think of it as two laps around a track. It's not that far and you're getting faster." He says and helps me off the cool ground.
"My legs, arms, and stomach hurt and now I have to run," I complain.
"Yup, and let's get it over with." He says and pulls me outside.
"I'm..going... to die." I say bent over trying to regain my breath. Mr.Fit over to my right didn't even break a sweat once again.
"Keep walking or you're going to hurt worse." He says and grabs my arm. We slowly walk back up to the building.
When we walk into the building the white walls look like they're moving. "I'm dizzy," I say and feel myself lean into Sam.
"You're dehydrated, I'll get yeah some water." He says and I nod my head. He helps me to a wall and I slide down it until my butt hits the ground. Sam walks away and I start stretching. When I realize Sam is staring at me I speak up.
"What ya lookin at?" I ask and he starts walking again.
"I just can't believe how flexible you are." He responds and hands me the water. I eagerly open it and take a big drink. I want to chug it down, but that will give me a stomach ache I don't want.
"I've always been even if I don't stretch for a long time," I say and shrug my shoulders. He nods his head like he understands and helps me off the ground. "I'm gonna take a shower," I say and he nods his head. I grab my clothes and go to the shower.

"All better?" Sam asks as I enter the messy room. The bags are always moving and clothes are piled in corners. I'm not cleaning though, so it'll stay.
"Very much." I say as I sit down next to him on the floor. He quickly closes the book he was reading. I see another book inside the big book. "You're reading the diving book again?" I question knowing that's not what he's really reading.
"Um, ya." He lies back, I can see there is something else in the book.
"You're lying." I say and point to the book that's in the diving book.
"Just some stuff I want to catch up on." He says and I give him a look saying I don't believe you.
"Can I see it then?" I ask and he shakes his head quickly. "Why not?" I ask suspiciously of what he could be reading.
"It's nothing." He says and tries to move the book to his side, but I grab it and open it. I see my notebook. My notebook that I write in that went missing. "It's not what it-"
"Don't even say that. You lied to me and went through something personal of mine. I asked if you saw it and you lied. How could you lie straight to my face? This is personal to me and you knew that. You had no right to read it." I say exasperated at him. I stand up and rip my notebook out of his other book.
"I wasn't going to read it, but it was open and I started reading the page and... and then I started to read more of it. I just wanted to know more about what had happened to you." He says in a calm voice and stands up beside me. Keep calm Alexis. Just because he was a jerk doesn't mean I should lose control.
"That still doesn't give you the right and if you wanted to know something you should have asked." I say still furious. I start walking out of the room, but he grabs my arm. I spin around to shout at him, but he starts speaking.
"Would you have told me the truth if I asked?" He says as I rip my arm away from him.
"If I wanted you to know I would have answered correctly if not then I would have told you I didn't want to talk about it." I spit back at him and start walking again. He grabs my arm again and I change my eyes at him making him let go of my arm. I turn around and storm off.
"Carol," I say knocking on her door. She opens the door and I see Matt in there. I don't care if he hears what I have to say so I just start talking. "Sam's a dick and I want so badly to hurt him," I say and she gives me a questioning look. "First he lied to me about my notebook and then he read it. This is a personal book and when I thought I lost it he told me he didn't know where it was. I caught him reading it in the room and then he tried to hide it from me. I told him before that I didn't want him reading it and then he goes and does it." I rush and then take a deep breath. Carol and Matt are both staring at me like they've never seen me mad.
"Why's the notebook so personal?" Matt asks and stands up.
"There are personal thoughts and things that have happened to me." I say and Carol shakes her head.
"Matt you're going to be sharing a room with Sam for a while. Corrine, you can stay in mine." She says and I nod my head. Matt grabs his backpack and walks out the door.
"Thank you." I say and she smiles.
"That's what friends are for. Now let's get some sleep." She says and lays on the ground. "You can have the cot, oh and I'm a deep sleeper so if you need anything you're going to have to shake me awake." She says and closes her eyes. I turn the light off and carefully walk back to the cot still pissed off. I shouldn't be letting him get me this mad, I need to just ingore it. I look at Carol, surprised she just took the ground. Then I see she's under a lot of clothing, it's probably better than the hard cot.
***
I get like four hours of sleep, but I'm just glad I got any. Carol is still asleep which doesn't surprise me. It's only like five in the morning. I get up and walk around the halls. There are more kids up this morning than normal. What's today? I look at my phone. Monday. Does school start today? I almost run into Jake when I go around the corner to the kitchen.
"Corrine? Hi. How are you?" He asks in a caring voice.
"Good. Is today the first day of school?" I ask and he nods his head quickly. He must be in a rush to get somewhere.
"Ya, and I have to go. Oh, you're going to work with Sam." He says, but before I can get a word in he's gone running down another hall. Why him? This is not a good way to start a Monday. I walk into the kitchen and grab an apple from the fridge.
"Hey, Corrine." I hear Rick's voice. He cooks a lot of the main meals or he helps the ones making it.
"Hi Rick." I say and take another bite of the apple.
"You stole another apple. How am I supposed to make the apple pies if you keep eating all the apples?" He asks and I shrug my shoulders. "Just because you think apple pie is distasteful doesn't mean the other kids here think the same." He says and chuckles.
"I won't eat anymore deal." I say and he smiles nodding his head. "I've got to go and get new clothes, see ya around," I say and he waves goodbye before helping the kids with the breakfast.
I slowly walk back to my room hoping and praying that Sam won't be there. I hate my luck. The door is open as usual and Sam's changing into a shirt. His hair is wet, must have just taken a shower. I walk into the room and ignore his stare. There are blankets on the ground, but Matt's not in the room. I quickly grab jeans and a nice blouse and when I think he's not going to say anything he does.
"I'll meet you in the cafeteria and then we can go to my work." I hear him say. I don't turn around or nod my head, I just keep walking to the bathroom.
The day is cold when I step outside. I have a thick sweatshirt on, but the cold air goes right through it. "We are going to have to use my bike and I only have one helmet."
"You wear it," I say, but when we get to his bike he puts the helmet on my head. I hate helmets, the breeze feels good in my hair.
"Sorry, my bike my rules." He says and adjusts the straps. I huff but don't say anything. He tells me where to put my feet, so I can get on and when I do we are squished together. I wrap my arms around him even though I wish I could just strangle him. I watch as the trees go by and we both stay silent, I mean it would be hard to talk anyways.
***
"Sam who is this?" A girl asks before exiting the building. She has dark brown hair and light makeup. She's about five inches taller than me and has way more muscle than me. I smile and let Sam do the talking.
"Ali this is Corrine, Corrine Ali." He says and Ali smiles back at me.
"I have to go, hope to see ya around." She says before quickly walking to a red Saturn. Sam walks into the daycare and I follow. We walk down a hallway that has pictures of animals. There are ones that don't even look like they tried and others are full of glitter and paint. Definitely little children work. The ground is a deep dark blue and has every shape from the normal ones to ones I can't even pronounce.
Sam opens a door with hand leaves painted on it. There are babies in cribs and four other kids. They look to be four or five years old. When they see Sam the four little ones go running to him. He talks to all of them as they all say things at the same time. I don't know how he keeps up with all of them, but he does. Once they're all done talking they turn to me.
"Who are you?" One of the girls ask. She has bright blond hair that's in pigtails. She has bright green eyes and is wearing a pink dress.
"Corrine. What's your name?" I ask and she smiles. Phew.
"I'm Ashley." She says and then another girl says her name.
"Claudia." She says in a quiet voice. Her hair is brown like mine, she has bright blue eyes, and she's wearing a purple shirt with dark jeans.
"Nikki." A black haired girl says before playing with her dolls again. She's wearing a red shirt with jeans. Her eyes are a hazel color. The last child says his name.
"Griffin." He says. He has brown hair and eyes and is wearing a star wars shirt with jeans. Then, Ashley, Claudia, and Griffin start playing with different toys.
"Ashley likes you which is good because if she didn't see would make your life a pain. She is very confident and loves pink. Claudia is quiet and keeps to herself. She never really talks much, she'll tell me a few things, but that's it. Nikki is very independent. She doesn't like help and likes to be on her own. And then there's Griffin. He is your average boy. He likes to play in the dirt and is in love with cars. That's all of the older kids I watch. There's normally three babies that I also watch." He says and walks over to the cribs. There are two boys and a girl. "David is the youngest. Samantha is the middle and Jason is the oldest. They're not too bad unless one is hungry." Sam says and then David starts crying. Sam picks him up and then it's like a chain reaction. All three are awake and not happy about it. "Here. Just hold him while I change Samantha's and Jason's diapers." He says and puts the little thing in my arms.
"What if I hurt him?" I ask staring at him. He stares back at me and I feel nervous. Don't drop him. I say and slowly start to rock him.
"You'll be fine," Sam says before disappearing into the other room. I slowly sit down with David still in my arms and smile. He's so cute. He ends up grabbing my hair.
"Owowowow." I say and pull it out of his fingers with my bad hand. He grabs my finger and sucks on it.
"He always does that." Claudia says next to me.
"Oh." I say. She then sits down next to me and puts a toy close to his face. He grabs it and releases my finger. I wipe his saliva on my pants and watch as he plays with it.
"Can I take your pony out and braid it." She asks. Surprised that she asked I give her a confused look.
"Your hair is so long. I like braiding. I won't hurt you, promise." She says. I nod my head and she stands up. She takes my ponytail out and I see her put it on her wrist. She runs her hands through my hair to get the snarls out. I feel her start to play with my hair. It feels really good actually.
David squirms in my arms and I sit him in my lap. He sits up for a little and then falls into my stomach. I hold him up and then see Samantha and Jason crawling towards us. I don't see Sam. He must still be doing something. The kids all play nicely to my surprise. Sam still hasn't returned. Not that I should care. I'm still mad at him, but leaving me with all these kids makes me nervous. I don't know what to do if something happens.
Once another like 20 minutes pass I get up still holding David in my arms and look in the room he went into. Not in there. I look out in the hallway, but still don't see him. The kids continue to play not noticing Sam's gone. Claudia walks up to me again. "Where did Sam go?" She asks. I shrug my shoulders. David starts to cry again and I start to rock him, but he still whines. Um, what to do? I turn him over and look in his diaper. He's still dry. Sam then quickly walks in. "Where were you?" I ask and he seems out of breath.
"David's mom didn't leave his formula. I had to go to the store and find it, which took like 15 minutes. Here." He says handing me a bottle and then rushing back out. It's warm and once I put on David's lip he starts sucking. I watch him and Sam comes back in giving the children something. I look up at Sam surprised that he's watching me. Sam smiles before going back to the other kids. This might not be too bad.
