Chapter Three
The song I wanted deleted and I can't remember so, this is the replacement.
08 - 31 - 15
"Hey Corrine. Are you ready to have fun again today?" Carol asks as we walk outside. Sam is behind us and is leaning against a tree. He acts weird when he's around other people. I nod my head a little and she smiles. "Ok, I'm going to get you mad again. What I say is not true, but I need you to lose control so you can control it." She says and looks at me seriously.
"Let's do this again." I say and she nods her head.
"I don't mean any of it, I promise." She says just like before and looks at me dead in the eyes. I nod my head. "Why do you have to be such a freak." She starts with rude comments. The anger doesn't start until she calls me a slut, then I feel the weird feeling. I know my eyes changed because Carol smiles and Sam takes a step back. "Good, now try to get the anger gone," Carol says, but I feel like I'm losing more control. "Control it. You need to stop it. You don't want to hurt someone." She says, but I take a threatening step to her.
She holds her ground. "Don't lose control. Don't let it take control." She says even as I'm right next to her. I feel my hand want to rise and touch her neck, but I try holding it down. No, don't let it. I tell myself and close my eyes tightly. Take control of it, don't let it control you. I tell myself over and over. After a while of talking to myself, I open my eyes. "See you did it. You got control of it. It takes time for you to do it, but you did. We will work on it more, but then we'll need to work on it with someone you don't know or don't like. It'll help in the long run." Carol says and high fives me.
"I really did it. I stopped it." I say, but don't believe it, just like the other days when we practiced. The first time she had to help stop it because I couldn't do it, but today was my fourth time stopping it alone.
"We won't work on it long because then you'll get tired from it." She says and smiles. I do feel more tired than before.
"Why do sometimes I feel like your family and then feel like you're challenging me?" I ask and her eyes widen.
"When I tried to get you to calm down when I first met you I wasn't afraid, but when I feel threatened my eyes give you a different meaning. It's a little weird and confusing." She says and looks at Sam.
"Interesting and Sam you look like you've seen a ghost." I say and Carol starts laughing.
"When you do that it freaks me out. Your eyes glow and I can't stop you. I scares the living shit out of me and having two of you doesn't help." He says and pushes of the tree to walk towards us.
"Are we really that threatening?" I ask and turn back to Carol.
"Well if you touch his neck then he has to serve you. We can persuade them easily. I'd say it's pretty scary." She says and changes her eyes at him.
"Don't do that. It gives me the goosebumps." Sam says and shivers. Carol changes her eyes back to normal and laughs. I smile a little at Sam's reaction.
"I'm sorry, but I've got to help Sharon so Sam you're on your own. Don't make her mad." She says and turns away heading back to the building.
"I hate when she does that to me." He says and shivers again. I crack a smile. "Glad you think it's funny. It's not right when someone's eyes go all black." He says, but glances at me. "Your eyes are like a light purple. I want to look at them, but I'm afraid to." He says and I feel warm again. Wish I could control that to. "Wanna try some water bubbles?" He asks, but makes a wave. How in the name? I wonder watching.
"How'd-"
"Lots of practice, but we won't do that." He says and turns to me. All the water goes back into a beautiful pond. I've only practiced once with him yesterday so today is only my second time. We always practice in the forest. "What you need to do is with one hand make it look like you're turning a knob." He says and does it. Water comes up and out of the little pond. I try the same, but end up splashing it everywhere. "Thanks, wanted a shower." He says and wipes his face.
"Sorry." I say and try not to laugh.
"Ok, when doing this you can't be tense, you have to relaxed. Like a flowing river." He says and does the hand motion again. I nod my head and look down at the water. Don't focus hard. Just let it flow. I tell myself, but end up giving us both showers.
"We are going to try this differently." He says and wipes his face again. I do the same and when I open my eyes he's right in front of me. I take a sharp intake of breath. "I'm going to stand next to you and you can do the same motions I do." He says and stands a little behind me. He moves his hand slowly and water forms above the pond. I take a deep breath and try. I fail again. I do this for a long time until we have had about 40 showers.
"I don't think I need a shower for a week now." He says and shakes his head. "You can move it somewhat, but forming it and making sure it goes where you want it to is another story." He says, but he doesn't sound mad. He starts moving his hands and a big gust of wind comes at both of us. My hair and clothes are completely dry. My hair's a mess, but at least I'm dry. "Nice hair. You wanna see something cool?" He asks. My cheeks get warm and I nod my head. He moves his hands and water starts forming. He makes this dolphin with the water and then like freezes it or something. That's strange, but pretty.
"Wow, how'd you do that?" I ask and he moves it to my hand. Then he makes it back into water. "Hey?" I say and look up at him.
"Is for horses." He says smiling. Horse? What is he talking about?
"Why'd you bring a horse into this?" I ask confused.
"Hay is for horses." He says and laughs. Haha, I get it. I roll my eyes at him. "I have like an extra water power so I can mold things with water and did you just roll your eyes at me?" He asks and takes a step towards me. I don't know if he's mad at me or just joking, but I don't like it.
"S-sorry." I say and take a few steps back. Sam's face drops.
"It's fine. You can do what you want. I didn't mean to scare you." He says and stops walking towards me.
"Sorry, I just...." I shake my head looking anywhere, but at him.
"It's ok. You don't need to be sorry." He says and I feel him looking at me. Then my phone buzzes again. I jump a little, but grab it out of my pocket.
Alert - Meet with Sarah at 1:00 I look up at the clock on my phone. 12:50. "Where do I meet with Sarah." I ask looking at Sam. He looks sad, but I may be imagining it. The first time, she had canceled so I didn't start training with her yet.
"I'll show you. It's this way." He says and starts walking. I follow him and then see dirt, rock, and ground, but not much grass. My feet feel weird here, like I can control the ground. Maybe I'm going crazy.
"Hey Sam." A girl says and walks out from behind a rock. She startles me a little. She has blonde hair and it's in a ponytail. She has a tight tank top and some jean shorts on. A little too short to me, but whatever.
"Sarah." Sam says back. Sarah glances at me before looking back at Sam. "Isn't Carol supposed to be here?" She asks and he crosses his arms.
"She needed to help Sharen." He says and sits on a rock.
"Great, I'm suck with a psycho girl." She mumbles. I feel anger boil inside me. She shouldn't judge me before she's even met me. I don't say anything, but when she turns around she looks a little nervous. "Sam?" She asks and he looks up.
"Really. You couldn't just shut the hell up." He yells and glares at her.
"I thought she had more control than this." She says and takes a few steps back from me.
"Corrine. Remember before. Just do it now. Ignore what she said. She doesn't even know you, she's just being a jerk." He says and walks closer to me.
"Don't." I say and put my hand up. I don't want to hurt him. He stops immediately and watches me. I close my eyes and try to calm myself down. Get it together, Alexis. After a few minutes the weird feeling goes away. When I open my eyes both Sam and Sarah look relieved.
"Your eyes are crazy purple." She says. Sam shoots her a glare before looking at me.
"All good?" He asks. I nod my head. He smiles before sitting back down on the rock he was on before.
"Ok let's try this again." Sarah says. "Sorry about what I said." She says and walks closer to me. I don't believe her, but don't feel like fighting with her. She made a horrible first impression on me.
"It's fine. Let's just begin." I say and she nods her head.
"Plant your feet like this and move your arms like this." She says and a ball of rock goes flying. I do the same as she does, but when I move my hands a big ball almost hits Sam.
"Hey, try not to kill me." He says and stands up to walk further away from us.
"Sorry." I say as he watches me and goes away behind me. I look over at Sarah. Her face is mixed with confusion, shock, and a little anger. "What?" I ask nervously.
"Most people can't do this right away, but you did it almost perfect. Just didn't aim." She says still looking shocked.
"Is that a good thing?" I ask and look back at Sam. He smiles and nods his head.
"Yeah I guess. Ok try this." She says. She moves her feet and arms at the same time. When she's done there is a fort looking thing over her. Then it's gone in like a second. She looks at me and smiles. She doesn't think I can do it. I'll prove her wrong. I do the motions she did and then I'm in a little fort. Ha, I still did it. I move my hands down and the fort does it. "Ok, I'm going to throw a rock up. You try to destroy it." She says and makes one. I turn my foot and move my hand grab the ball and throw it down. "Ok, that's really weird. The only other person that learned this quick was...Claudia." She says and shakes her head.
"Who is that?" I ask and Sam comes over to us.
"She was the best earthbender and confessor known." He says and Sarah nods her head.
"Where is she?" I ask wanting to meet her.
"She disappeared a while ago and never came back. Nobody knows why, but everyone knew she was great and she is still welcome here. She saved our whole institution from humans that wanted to study us." Sarah says and looks at Sam. They share a look and then look at me.
"What?" I ask confused.
"Nothing your just really small to be an earthbender. Most have more muscle." Sarah says and Sam looks like he's in space. I look down at myself.
"Yeah, I don't gain weight easily." I say and look back up at her.
"Your lucky." She says and then my phone buzzes.
Jake - Can you meet me with doc? The news has come. Yeah, there info that will be in within a day, was a lie. It was taking forever.
"Um, Jake wants me. I've got to go." I say and put my phone in my pocket. Then a wall comes in front of me. I turn around and look at Sarah, slightly annoyed.
"The institution is that way." She says removing the wall. I nod my head and Sam follows me.
"I'll lead you there." He says and walks a little in front of me. "I don't think Sarah likes you." He says and looks at me.
"I got that, but why?" I ask. I'm not the one that called her a psycho girl.
"Because you are better than her and you don't even realize that she was challenging you." He says still looking at me.
"I knew, but I didn't want to say anything." I say making him laugh.
"You won't need a lot of training with her." He says and we walk into the building. He takes the stairs down and down and down until we meet a door. We walk through a hallway before going into an office.
"There you are." Jake says and smiles at me. Ashley hugs me again, I stay stiff until she releases me. Why do people always hug me? Is there a sign on my forehead or something?
"Here is the results in paper. You have developed all your gifts, there is something a little weird, but it's probably just a small thing, so we aren't going to worry about it. You'll be great after learning how to control them. Your health is not as great. Your very underweight and you seem to be always going on... how do I say this so you'll understand... you don't sleep much or eat much so your body is having troubles growing muscle and getting height. The height probably won't change now, but if you get sleep and eat a lot more food you should get right back on track for your weight. We have a diet for you." She says and hands me another paper. "That'll help gaining some weight, your size might change a little, but not by much. It'll just make you healthy and not skin and bone." She says looking at me. I look up from the papers and at her.
"Ok, I'll try doing that." I say and she looks relieved.
"Great. I'll keep tabs on you to make sure you're on the right track." She says and then her computer beeps.
"Um, I've got to go. Talk with you later Corrine. Bye." She says before running out the room.
"Corrine will you sit." Jake asks and sits down in a chair behind a desk. I sit and he looks at me nervous. "Can you tell me about your past? It'll help us help you." He says and I feel cold. I can't talk about it. What he did to me. What those people did to me. What I do to myself. I can't say anything to them. Greg is already going to try and find me. If I say anything he will hurt me more. I don't want to be in the hospital again. I can't tell anyone what happened or they'll get hurt too. I can't-
"Corrine? Corrine. You don't have to today." Jake says. I close my eyes because I know I lost control again. I take a few minutes before opening them. "You don't have to tell me today." He says and tries giving me a small smile.
"I-I c-can't say anything." I get out before Sam sits down next to me.
"That's fine. You don't have to. You can just focus on everything else." He says and glances at Jake. I nod my head.
"O-ok." I say and stand up. I start to walk out when Jake puts his hand on my shoulder. "Don't touch me, please." I say and back up.
"I'm sorry. I just want you to trust us. When you tell us about yourself it makes it easier on you and the people around you. " Jake says and takes a step back.
"Sorry, I just-"
"It's fine. Maybe some other time." He says and smiles again. I nod my head and start walking. I turn down a few hallways before I hear Sam.
"Do you know where you're going?" He asks and jogs up to me.
"No I just want to get away." I say and turn down another hallway.
"Go left." He says. I don't object. I make a left turn. "Left." He says again. I do and see a door. I open it and see a lake. There is a ton of boats that are docked. I walk out more and look at the lake. My feet are cool on the ground and I feel myself playing with the pearl around my neck. I walk down to the docks and wish I wasn't such a disappointment to everyone.
I've tried to change, but I always disappoint someone somehow. I hear the rain and then feel it on my arms and then I'm soaked. Sam doesn't talk to me, he just stands behind me and watches. The papers I had before are gone. I must have dropped them when I walked out.
Then the thunder comes and I feel scared. I get memories of what happened and feel like I'm getting a panic attack. I hate these. Sam walks over to me and sits down. "It's just a storm. It can't hurt you." He says, but I see concern in his eyes.
"I'm not afraid of the storm." I say before I see lightning. I feel my breath pick up and I grip the pearl through my shirt.
"Then what scares you?" I hear Sam's voice. I close my eyes and pull my legs into my chest ignoring him. I try to control the panic, but soon I feel like I can't breath and I suffocating. I can't move. I can only hear the thunder and see the old memories. I tighten my eyes and feel someone lift me off the ground. I can't move so I just stay there, not objecting. Then I feel surrounded by warmth. I hear voices and try blocking them out.
"Don't." I hear my voice. I can hear everyone around me and feel more panic. "Get away." I scream, but feel like I can't move. I cover my ears and try to block the voices out. "I didn't mean too." I say as someone says I got there brother killed. I feel tears go down my cheeks. "Don't touch me." I say as someone comes to me with a needle or something.
"Corrine! Corrine, they're not here. Open your eyes." A different voice says. I open my eyes and see Sam kneeling in front of me. I'm in my room on the floor. I look back at Sam. He looks concerned and is soaking wet. There is water dripping from his hair.
"S-sorry." I say and pull my legs into my body again. I feel my eyes go back to normal. I didn't even know they changed. Sam didn't seem scared, like normal though.
"You don't need to be. Will you tell me what's wrong?" He asks. I look away from him and shake my head no. "Ok, we both need to change out of our wet clothes. Why don't you take a shower and try to calm down." He offers and stands up. I nod my head and slowly get up. He leaves my room and I go to my bathroom. I put a new pair of clothes on the counter before getting in the shower. I sit in the warm water watching my blood go down the drain after making more cuts to my wrist. The mixture looks so pleasing to the eyes.
***
Once I'm done, I turn the water off and get dressed. I make sure my cuts won't bleed before putting the cover shirt thing-y on. I walk into my room tired. I go to go to sleep, but a knock comes at my door. I huff and walk over to it. Carol is there. She looks happy. Of course. "Hey dinner's going to be served in about five minutes. Just wanted to remind you. Come down. It'll be fun." She says smiling.
"Ok." I say even though I really don't want to and walk out the room. I close the door and follow her down the hallway. We go into a big, big, big, room. There are lots of people. They're all talking or watching the tv. It's still storming outside, but not as bad as it was before.
"We sit over here if you want." She says and points to one of the many tables. Carol sits down and I sit next to her. A girl next to me smiles.
"Hi, my name's Alex." She says and extends her hand.
"Corrine." I say and shaking her hand. She nods her head before talking with another girl. A lot of people tell me there names and I'm trying to remember who is who. Then I see Sam walk in. He walks to the end of the table with a sour look. Everybody seems like it's a normal thing, but the Sam that talks to me isn't sour. He's fun and likes to talk a lot. "Carol, why does Sam act so different when around people?" I whisper only so she can hear. She looks at Sam and sighs.
"I can't say why. If you ask him he might tell you. He likes you and seems less on edge around you." She says and Sam glances at us. Something happens in his eyes and then they go back to being cold and distant. Bipolar, he has to be. Something beeps and two tables are then empty. There is a beeper on every table and when it beeps you go up and get your food. I look around and tap my feet. "Why don't you ever wear shoes?" Carol asks and looks at my feet.
"I don't like wearing them. They're uncomfortable." I say making her laugh.
"Whatever works, I guess." She says and then our table beeps. Everyone gets up. I follow Carol. I looks like when you get food at school, but the food looks delicious. The diet thing wants me to eat a lot of meat and protein foods. I grab some things that look good and then sit back down. I'm more at the end now, but I like it better. Carol sits down next to me and smiles. "Try the lasagna. I helped make it." She says and hands me a fork. I look at my plate, I forgot to get one again. I take it from her and she laughs. "Forgot again, don't worry I did for like the first month before I remembered to grab one." She says and watches me try the lasagna. It tastes amazing.
"Wow. I like it. You did good." I say and she yells yes.
"That was my first time making it so, phew, glad it tastes good." She says and then Sam sits on the very end of the table. He is about a foot away from me. He doesn't look up, just eats his food. I look back at mine and start eating again.
***
When I finish as much of my food that I can, I put my tray were Carol told me and start walking around. She asked me if I wanted her to come, but I told her I was fine. I start walking down a hallway and then my phone buzzes.
Good job keeping up with the diet. - Ashley
How did she know? Carol must have told her. I turn down another hallway and people are messing with water. "Hey your Corrine, right?" Some guy asks me.
"Ya?" I say confused why he would know.
"A lot of people come on the boats with us. If you want to come it's a 7:00 and by the docks. It's for people that have gifts with the water." He says and smiles at me.
"I'll think about it." I say and he nods his head. I continue walking thinking if I should go. Then my phone buzzes.
I need you to come to my office. - Ashley. Why would she need to meet with me? I find stairs and go to where Sam took me earlier today. It takes me a while to find the office because I don't remember where we turned. I knock on her door and her head pops up. She smiles and motions for me to come in. I do and take a seat in front of her desk.
"I wanted to talk to you." She says and I look at her confused.
"About what?" I ask and start playing with the pearl around my neck.
"About the abuse." She says and gives me a sympathetic look.
"I don't know what you're talking about." I say and feel nervous.
"I know you were abused. Please it'll help you if you talk to me. They can't hurt you, none of them." She says and I shake my head.
"No, I can't. I can't go through it." I say and stand up.
"Corrine. I need you to run a test or talk to me." She says standing up. I'm not taking any tests. I can't do that again.
"Ask a question and I'll try to answer it." I say but don't sit down. Ashley lets out a breath.
"Have you ever been forced to do something sexual or have been sexually assaulted?" I don't want to tell her, but I don't know a way out of not telling her.
"I've been raped, that's it." I say and she nods her head. She writes something on a piece of paper before looking back up at me.
"You were physically abused. Do you know for how long?" She asks keeping her eyes up on me.
"The first time I remember being abused was when I was three, it has continued ever since then." I say trying not to bring any bad memories up. She nods her head and writes more down.
"Have you ever been suicidal?" She asks and I don't respond. She looks up at me and I huff.
"Yes, but I'm too weak to do it. I've tried, but can't go through with it." I say and feel embarrassed. She rights more down. Before she can ask another question we hear a noise. I walk out the room and around the corner. Sam is standing there. "What are you doing?" I ask and feel angry. Was he listening to the conversation?
"Um. Nothing. Just wanted to talk to Ashley." He says and Ashley comes up behind me.
"Why were you listening? You know that's against the rules." She says and I feel more angry. How could he just listen? He had no right to just barge in.
"I-I overheard and just started listening." He says and looks at the ground.
"You have no right." I raise my voice and feel out of control.
"I know, I just-" He stops as he looks up at me. Ashley moves in front of me to block my way.
"Corrine, think about what you're doing." She says, but I blow her off. My hands move and she's on the ground. She's not hurt, but she can't move because the water is frozen around her. I walk closer to Sam, but can't stop. I look at my hands, but they won't listen to me.
"Corrine, I'm sorry. I was just curious. You don't talk to anyone about anything, so I just wanted to know. I didn't hear much." He says and doesn't move. I feel my body move closer to him but I feel tired. I move my hand to hit him with rock, but he moves out the way. I go to take another step, but stop myself. I close my eyes, but then they're too heavy to keep open. I let myself fall into sleep, not remembering what's happening.
