Chapter 24: Elope
Third person's POV
There was the crackling of fire. At once (Y/N) recalled that the room she had dozed off in hadn't had a fireplace. Fearing the worst that the room was on fire she bolted up in a panic starting, which was instantly dulled when someone pulled her close uttering gently.
"You're safe now."
"Shadow!?"
Looking up she wanted to pinch herself in the fear she were still asleep, but she could feel his arms around you holding her gently, there was that familiar armor, and her eyes wouldn't tease her so.
"Calm down, you're safe."
"B-but where are we!? And what about Mephiles!?" She asked frantically scanning the room, it was dark besides the fire and she worried he would materialise out of every dark cranny.
"The Society is conducting a man hunt for him, please calm do-
But she cut him off by grabbing the collar of his jacket and pulling him closer, until her lips suddenly met his. Ever since he left for London she had thought of nothing else than his departing gesture. But she were unsure of what had sprung inside her demanding such intimacy, but she were happy to let it take over her. And at least he hadn't pulled away.
"S-sorry!" She gasped pulling away yourself.
His response was to return the favour, deeper than before. He gripped her close, his hands entangled in her hair, your arms locked around his neck. After a few more seconds of passion they both pulled away, herself gasping a little.
Resting her forehead on his shoulder he refused to let her go, what having just happened being conformation enough of how they felt about one another.
But then Shadow mumbled something.
"I'm sorry..."
"What are you sorry for?" She asked not looking up.
"I'm sorry." he repeated.
"You have nothing to be sorry for."
"No, you don't understand."
"Then help me understand."
He gave a sigh, and for a short while didn't say anything. Simply took a seat on the bed next to her.
"Its my fault."
"What is your fault?"
"Because of me you have ultimately been in more danger than was necessary."
"What do you mean?"
He sighed again.
"I am branded as a traitor, and after that I am recognised as being powerful. And so when the supernatural community learnt that I was ordered to protect you when you were younger, they saw it as a challenge. Increasing the danger."
"Well by the sounds of it you were the best qualified to protect me. But..." you hesitated "Can I ask why you're branded a traitor, I remember one of Scourge's goons call you that the night he tried to take me."
"It's a long story."
"Well I think we've got plenty of time."
He then proceeded to explain his past. Unlike other vampires, he was created, rather than born. Created by a 16th century scientist and wizard named Gerald, under the rule of King Arthur, to act as a companion to his witch granddaughter Maria. However at this point in time life was perilous, due to a law being passed by the king that all supernatural beings were outlawed, and to be killed upon capture.
Witches, wizards, vampires, werewolf's, fairies, half breeds, they all went into hiding in order to protect themselves.
This law had been passed for roughly 50 years, yet Gerald remained optimistic. They were well withdrawn from society and most items they needed to could be acquired through the use of magic. The only problem being Maria's lack of interaction with children her age, along with her poor health.
Hence why Shadow was created. Not only did he act as a companion but as protection, as even though Maria was in poor health, she was by far from lack of spirit. Often venturing out into the forest in search of small woodland creatures and various herbs, Shadow had a difficult time keeping her safe.
But nonetheless he treasured those few years he had in that safe haven. Which sadly went up in smoke one fateful day.
Maria had strayed too far from the cloak of the forest, determined to heal a wounded rabbit at the edge of the beaten track. Only to be spotted by a faithful commoner to the king. She was burnt at the stake.
Shortly after Gerald too was caught commanding Shadow to not be caught, and whilst in prison Gerald took his own life after being forced to watch his granddaughters execution. That night, after Shadow had lost the only people he ever cared about, the castle and commoners celebrated the capture and killing of more supernatural beings.
But it was not long until the cheers turned into screams as Shadow took his vengeance of the entire village, killing the very king himself whom passed the law. Men, women, children, even animals. He didn't care, all he knew was the lust for vengeance consuming him.
Come the rising of the sun however, all his acts were brought to light. All the destruction, all the murder, it looked like a war zone. Yet the destruction had only been caused by one creature. By one monster. In the depths of despair Shadow was his own worst enemy in the way he ruined himself, seeing himself as the perfect definition as a murderer.
Desperate to find a meaning to his life, knowing he couldn't take his own, sort out any kind of authority. One that could either punish him, or contain his powers. He approached the Hunter Society, in its earliest days. But they were ahead of their time in terms of their opinions against vampires.
Rather than destroy them they sort to help them, teach them to interact safely with the non supernatural community. And Shadow approaching them, begging for them to prevent him from wrecking carnage again, only reaffirmed their hopes. Rather than punish however they gave him a purpose, the same as theirs. But Shadow did them one better, providing them with humane methods to restrain and disarm harmful vampires.
And so Shadow earned himself the name of traitor, as he betrayed his own kind. It was as though he had had his chance of a happy life, everything he had stolen. But now he had another chance.
"And so me being titled a traitor entailed competition, bringing more danger." He finished sombrely.
"But you're not a danger to me." (Y/N) tried to reassure him.
"I may not be personally but now an old enemy, whom I created, is now a threat."
(Y/N) hesitated a second before making the link. "Mephiles?"
He seemed to avoid her gaze before admitting.
"I had been part of the Hunter Society for 50 years when I took part in a unique mission. I and a few other hunters were to break up an occult meeting, one that had been known to conjure violent beasts to rebel against the Society." He began, his voice heavy with regret "however as I arrived the occult finished enchanting a spell, my shadow was absorbed and the Unknown known as Mephiles took my form."
The entirety of the situation was finally revealed to (Y/N). Over the past year during her various research in the library, more than once she had come across the term 'Unknown'. This was the name given to supernatural beings that no one could identify. They were basically mongrels of the supernatural world. But they were feared, and with good reason. As they were known for being more powerful than known beings.
"A hunter who was also a witch was able to deal him in an old relic. However a century ago, the relic disintegrated and he escaped. But until now has remain new hidden."
"So does that mean all we have to do is seal him away again?" She hypothesised quickly.
"The witch who created the relic has long passed."
For the first time since the lengthy explanation of Shadow's past, there was a moment of silence. Giving (Y/N) a moment to reflect. Shadow had been through so much, much through no fault of his own. Very much like herself, but not as horrendously. She couldn't exactly remember her parents being murdered, whereas Shadow had watched both those closest to him die.
So he was determined to never let anyone precious to him be taken again.
"I have made numorous mistakes, and it always the ones whom I care for which suffer the punishment."
It was her turn to comfort him. Taking him gently in her arms saying gently.
"Oh Shadow, we don't make mistakes, we make variations."
~Italy, Hunter Society HQ~
"What's all the all the racket about!?" A male hunter demanded.
He joined two other hunters at the closed metallic draw bridge, the doors open showing the cause of the trouble stood outside the HQ in the night.
"Sir what should we do!?"
"She could break in at any time!"
The one in command froze as he saw Rosy the Rascal stood on the other side of the gate, her face tear stained and eyes red. Sniffling holding a broken handle of what it seemed used to be a hammer.
"I already told you idiots!" She yelled still sobbing, behaving in a tantrum like manner "I want you stupid hunters to avenge my Scourgey!"
"Why should we help a savage like you?" One of the younger hunters challenged.
The commander quickly hushing them, fearing a angered insane vampire.
"Because that murderer Mephiles killed that stupid fox which I don't care about! But then he killed my Scourgey!" She broke down into sobs at her last line.
"Scourge and Fiona? Dead?"
The news numbed the hunters, both relief and the Unknown of who could have the power to do such a thing.
"Sir!"
"What is it now!?" The commander snapped looking at a forth hunter.
"It's Tails sir! He's-
But they were all cut off by a dull thud from outside. Looking back they saw, a beheaded figure. Rosy's eyes dulled as her life left her. Tails stood still as stone before rigidly straightening his figure, not caring for the hunters who had just witnessed the execution.
"If you love him so much then I will send you to join him." He said, barely audible to even his ears. Clutching his blood stained fist he bares his fangs as tears streamed down his face.
"I only wish I could do the same."
I'm sorry but there once again won't be an update next week as I have a VERY important exam next week, a philosophy a-level retake, which I need to dedicate everything to.
