Chapter 25: Marked
Your POV
Flicking through the pristine pages of your new spell book, the handwriting written in delicate black ink and intricate text. Many of the spells paralleled the previous spells in your mothers spell book you had found in your old home. But rather than grow sad at the thought you gave a small smile, being relieved and touched that Shadow had brought the two books to the mansion as well.
He even had told you that your photo album was in good condition back in the HQ in Italy. Whom he was currently on the phone to down the hall on an old, but secure, rotary phone.
"Understood. Did Sally receive the given information? Good."
Once Shadow had told his tale you took your turn, informing him of Mephiles' explanation at your being a half breed, and he had delivered this new knowledge to Sally. But you being a half breed had deeply surprised and concerned him, and you understood why when he explained to you that half breeds were feared the most by those who resented the supernatural kind.
In actual fact during the great purge, when he had lost Maria and Gerald, he had learnt of many barbaric occasions when half breeds had been either murdered still inside their mothers or murdered shortly after their birth. Killed for simply being conceived, not even given the chance to be born.
Which resulted in the law being passed of half breeds being banned to be conceived.
Naturally these briefly described murders horrified you. But Shadow was quick to assure you that you were safe here, you were safe with him. Where you were currently, it was a mansion in upper Scotland, and it had been the home of Maria, Gerald and Shadow. And he hadn't returned here since they were executed.
To many memories, which pained him too much.
Yet he seemed to have overcome all that, for you. And he told you of how, even now, the house was still enchanted, along with many charms and talismans buried around the grounds. Very much like the hunter society HQ's Mephiles would be unable to enter the grounds. So you were unable to leave the building.
So once again it was a waiting game. Staying in the dark until Mephiles was caught, who was now being hunted by the hunter society. And you still found it odd that very often all you did was wait around, unlike action movies and adventure books when they would be packed with endless action, locations always changing.
Shadow was still talking on the phone to Sally but you didn't pay attention to his words as you caught onto a particular spell. It was called the Evangelium spell. Recalling the spell you had used against Mephiles you remembered that 'Rache' meant revenge in German. And you could remember your mother telling you that her grandfather was German.
Meaning all her spells must have been formulated by your mothers grandfather. You racked your brain for the few German words your mother had taught you, in the hopes you would one day become fluent. Ich Heibe, I am. Hallo, hello. Tusch, goodbye. Evangelium, Evangelium, Evangelium... meaning, gospel. Gospel? Gospel spell?
Gospel was the bible, but why would your mother think you would need a spell to do with the bible. However, the bible, for Christians, contained the truth. So the word gospel could also be interpreted as the truth. Indeed now you knew what you were, how your parents where taken from you and why Mephiles was after you.
Yet this spell made you wonder if there was anything else there was for you to know, Figuring you had nothing to lose you recited the spell, waiting for its effects to take place. When, nothing happened. Giving a sigh you figured you decided you must know everything you needed to.
Just then you heard a heavy sound, caught in between a clatter and a thumping sound, yet it was obvious it wasn't normal. So putting down your book you dashed out your room, headed down the stairs, only to grow cold at the sight of Shadow staggered on the floor.
"Shadow!?"
At his side in an instant you tried to help him up only for him to feebly attempt to push you away, which instantly increased your panic, due to his efforts being so weak.
"Stay away..." he warned in a grouchy voice.
"Shadow what's wrong?" you asked calmly not letting go of him, however you couldn't help but grow ever so slightly uneasy at the sight of his bared fangs. Not only that his eyes were glowing, and you knew all too well what that meant. "When was the last time you had any blood?"
But the sisters warnings were ringing in your head, of who to never approach a vampire whose eyes were glowing red, as that meant they craved blood.
"Stay away." he repeated.
"No Shadow you need blood. Don't worry you can't kill me, so take as much as you need."
"You know, what I am..." he panted.
Shadow wasn't born, he was made. Meaning he was seen as imperfect by many. One reason being he had red eyes. And when vampires had red eyes it meant they found it harder to control their blood lust, if they went too long without satisfying their first the would most definitely drain a mortal dry.
"Please just stay away..."
But you knew if he was left in this state you were both done for, and at this rate he would slip into insanity.
"I'm sorry..."
Before he could give you a weak questioning glace you dug your nails into the palm of your hand until you drew blood. The instant he smelled your blood he pinned you to the wall, hesitating for a fraction of a second before plunging his fangs into your neck.
You would have surely screamed from the pain if you weren't still dazed from your head colliding with the wall. When the sudden events caught up with you everything was fading into a blur, you were vaguely aware of the sound of Shadow hungrily drinking your blood, the sensation was terrifying yet oddly exhilarating.
Despite your body growing cold and legs snapping from underneath you.
Hello little girl... your blood smells awfully nice. That night your parents were killed and that vampire nearly proceeded to send you to your grave as well, but there was also so many others who had died in such a way. Even though you knew you wouldn't die, you were still terrified.
I'll be fine, I'm immortal. I'll be fine, I'm immortal. I'll be fine...
******************************
(M/N) sat in a small city apartment sat on a dusty coloured sofa humming to herself, a tune which varied in its rhythm. Eventually she decided on a tune, it sounding very like a lullaby. She smiled at her accomplishment thinking of how she would sing it to the unborn child inside of her. Rubbing her slightly enlarged stomach lovingly.
But there was always that fear itching at the back of her mind. The fear of how powerful her child would be. She only prayed that the child would be male, as females can be so harshly taken advantage of in this cruel world. In actual fact her husband, (F/N), was picking up the letter from the doctors which would confirm the child's sex.
(Sex is who you are biologically, gender is what you identify as personally)
She had dared to leave the protective amulets and charms of the apartment for a few short hours for the regular appointments, refusing to give any foul creature the chance to capture her and her unborn child.
"Don't worry, we'll protect you little one." she whispered to her baby.
Just then her ears picked up on rapid footsteps scaling the concrete staircase outside, she thought little of it until the door slammed open and (F/N) came frantically into the apartment, hair tousled and panting clutching a crumpled envelope.
"We have to leave now!"
"Why? What's the matter!?"
"It's a girl." he said gently yet tragically holding his wife close, feeling her starting to shake "and we both know what that means, so we need leave now." he finished started to bundle up as many necessities as possible.
"But where will we go?" (M/N) asked too starting to pick up vital items, packing her bag with her spell book and vials. Plus a spell book which was only half written.
"To the Darkling woods, where I met you. It has natural magic and should keep him away."
"Him? Whose him?"
(F/N) paused realising he'd let more slip then he would have liked to. He gave a deep sigh.
"I went to the hunter society-
"What!? Why!? Do they know I'm pregnant!?"
As if they did, then they would surely act as merciless as the rest of the supernatural community, claiming they were doing the right thing taking the child for their own.
"Calm down, for our daughters sake. I went to see Sister Claire."
Instantly (M/N) was put at ease at the familiar name, the only other mobian who knew of their conception of a child.
"She told me that, that..."
"(F/N)! For goodness sake just tell me!"
"Mephiles is somehow aware that you're pregnant." he finally spit out "And now he knows he's coming after her, he's coming after our daughter."
(M/N) sank back into her seat paralyzed with shock.
"Then there's nothing we can do. Nothing... He'll find us."
"No (M/N), there is still hope." he said cupping her face in his hands kneeling to her height "He only has 50 years left, 50 years and his physical form will disintegrate, he will cease to exist. All we have to do is wait and then our child will be safe! There is still hope."
"But 50 years (F/N)? I am immortal now due to the spell I cast on myself and you due to being a vampire, but is this what we want for our child? To spend 50 years in seclusion, her childhood stolen from her?"
"I know it is far from what we wanted, but she will be alive and with us. Where she belongs."
"But what if something happens to us?"
"Then she will be entrusted to either sister Claire or Joyce, and she will be protected by the Hunter Society. But don't think like that, not when we haven't even tried yet."
Giving a sniff (M/N) pulled back her tears and gave a nod. (F/N) planted a quick kiss to her forehead before resuming the hasty task of leaving their current life behind, in the hopes of finding a safer one.
Your POV
The image faded away until you could hear the crackling of the fire again. Sitting up you had to hastily dull your pace as your head was sent spinning. Clutching your head you racked through the filing cabinate of your mind trying to recall what had previously happened, but couldn't find recall anything.
The last thing you remembered was your dream, by now from reading your mothers spell book you had learned that both dreams and nightmares can serve as premonitions, brief visions into the future. But it was up to to sometimes deduce what the dream meant.
But it was clear this time that this wasn't a premonition but a recollection of the past . And now everything, was finally clear. Your parents had tried to keep you safe, but they had been found by a cult of vampires, you were taken into the care of Sister Claire. And the rest was history.
You would have given you head a small shake to get rid of the thought but decided against it when your head was set about spinning. Groaning you couldn't figure out as to why you had such a pounding headache. Running a hand through your slightly messy hair you then rubbed the back of your neck, only to grow nervous when your fingers brushed against two small, yet subtle bumps.
"What the...?"
Rubbing your fingers on the bumps again you felt they were evenly spaced and quite small. And then you froze as you figured what exactly they were, fang marks.
You clamped both hands to your mouth in shock, knowing very well what these fangs marks meant. You may not exactly remember what happened, but you could put the puzzle together as to what had happened. In fact now you could vaguely remember offering your blood to him.
Which left the main question, where was Shadow?
Getting up from the bed you legs took a second to solidify, before you regained your balance. With shaky steps you headed out the room, and despite being here for several days already the map of this mansion was still Latin to you.
"Shadow?" you called out lightly, recalling his previous warning of not to make any loud noises such as shouting, just in case there was anything outside.
Which reminded you of his other warning of not to leave the
"Shadow?"
"Don't. Don't come near me right now..."
"But-
"I can't trust myself right now, not around you."
"I promise you I'm fine, any blood that I lost-
"I know, and am relieved that you are fine, but I am no longer the same."
"What do you mean by that?" you asked fearfully, you would have stepped closer to him but of course you couldn't leave the mansion "Shadow please you're scaring me."
"Your blood, because you are a half breed, can deliver enhanced abilities to vampires. I didn't think that to be true. Until now." If Shadow feared his abilities before, you couldn't imagine how terrified he was of himself now "I don't want to risk harming you."
"Shadow, I'm not as weak as you think. I may not be as skilled as you, but I know how to use my crescent moon gun, I'm learning how to cast spells and I can recover from any injury." you paused "I know you want to protect me, so did Sister Claire and Joyce, so did my parents. But Shadow, you have to let me protect you too."
He remained silent for a second, before finally looking back at you. Taking the chance of having his attention you pulled back your hair from you neck, allowing him clearly to see the marks, his eyes widening his surprise as he saw them. Now there was no denying you love for each other, or that he was unable to be with you.
He looked as though he would have returned to your side, come into the warmth of the slightly chilly whether. When something came running towards the garden, or rather hopping. Shadow following (Y/N)'s concerned gaze looked back to see a luminous transparent blue chao, it stopped at Shadow who said calmly.
"It's a familiar, it's Creams." he informed her.
Lifting his hand the familiar vaporised into a stream of light spelling out a single word.
'Run'
