Surface
*Janna's POV*
I rushed into my job as a waitress at a small diner.
"Just in time."Said my boss, Sheryl. She's nice and lets me work around school hours. She hired me when I was 17, pregnant and scared and for that I'm very grateful.
"I know, the bus was late."I hurriedly tied my apron around my waist and went to help my first customer. He smiled at me.
"Hello Janna, how's life?"He asked laughing. He was a sweet old man and he had even helped me out a few times when I couldn't make rent. When I was pregnant he used to rub my stomach and ask how the baby was doing. Lydia loved him.
"Life's the same Arthur, Lydia's doing well in school."He smiled even wider.
"I'm glad, the usual for me dear."I wrote down a coffee with two creams, two eggs, bacon and toast, his usual.
"Coming right up Arthur."My work day went as usual and I went home on schedule. I walked towards the school to pick up Lydia and people whispered. It wasn't a big town and everyone knew I was a single mother. They knew I'd raised her by myself and that her father was nowhere to be seen. There was a mix of pity and disgust at what I was doing. People thought we should've married when I knew I was pregnant. I'm sure if he'd known he would've married me, but I'm not sure I would've wanted him to throw his life away on me. He had a future and I wanted him to have that future. I walked into the playground and spotted Lydia.
"Mummy I made you something!"Lydia squealed running up to me and handing me a clay flower pot painted purple and pink.
"It’s beautiful darling, I love it."I said peppering her face with kisses.
"I made one for Daddy too."She said handing me another pot painted blue and green. I felt tears spring to my eyes.
"Oh, baby, you know Mummy doesn't know where Daddy is."I said quietly and she nodded.
"I just thought he could have it if he ever came back."I hugged her tightly and carried her home. She would usually walk, but I didn't want her to see me crying. I wish he could've met her. I wish I hadn't run. Just as I was about to tell him I was pregnant he bursts out with I'm a merman. The first thing that crossed my mind was."Oh God, I slept with a fish and now I'm pregnant with his baby."Then I booked it straight out of there with him calling after me. I turned back to look at him. The look on his face of betrayal and hurt as he began to cry is forever etched into my brain. I wanted to turn back, but I didn't. How I wished I had.
*Louis's POV*
My door flew open.
"I have your food Lou."He said happily bringing it over to me."I also have a plan. I'm going to help you find Janna."I sat up and stared at him.
"How?"
"We're going to the surface.”
“We are, but I can't. We'd have to get that potion so we could have legs. I'm a Prince, Harry I can't just up and disappear."I said but he kept on smiling.
"I'll get my mother to sell the Queen on it. That you need a break, the stress is too much. The surface would be perfect."I smiled and flew out of bed. I hugged him tightly almost knocking him over when I collided with him.
"Thank you."He hugged me back.
"You're welcome."
*Anne's POV*
I can't believe I'm going along with this. We could both be fired for this, but yet here I am. I brushed through her hair preparing her for her day. Nothing special was planned so I had time to experiment with her hair and with that time came conversation as well.
"Jay, I think the Prince is a little down lately."I said carefully braiding the long strands into tiny strips to wrap up in an elaborate up-do. We had the time.
"Oh really?"She said.
"Yes, Harry told me that he's been stressed lately."
"That would explain all the grief he's been giving me."I nodded sympathetically.
"Boys can be such a hassle, I think he needs a break, from being a Prince. I think you should let Harry and him go to the surface. It would be a nice break. Harry would keep him safe."Jay thought about it.
"Yes, I think that would be a good idea thank you Anne for the suggestion."I smiled.
"Anytime Jay."
*Harry's POV*
I walked into his room the next morning.
"What did she say? Can we go?"He asked excitedly.
"We can, Mum convinced the Queen."He fist pumped and swam towards his trunk. He opened it and pulled a locket out. He kissed it.
"I'm coming for you Janna, we can be happy again."I smiled at him, but I couldn't help the feeling of dread that settled in my stomach. It had been five years, what if she had moved on? A lot could change in five years. How much had she changed? What if she was with someone else? I wanted him to get over her, but was the right thing to do to break his heart again?
"I don't want you to be disappointed Lou because she may have found someone else by now."His face fell.
"I hadn't thought about that."
"You still have to go because you need to know so you can move on if you have too."He nodded.
"Yes, definitely. I need to do this."
*Janna's POV*
I had taken Lydia to the beach after school. We both needed a break.
"Mummy look at my sand castle!"She squealed gesturing to the seashell covered mound of sand in front of her.
"Good job boo! I love it!"I exclaimed getting up from my beach towel. I knelt beside her and took a photo of it with my phone. I tightened her ponytail, as it was falling out and noticed something happening in the ocean.
"I think a storm's coming lovie, we'd better go home."I said scooping her up.
"But Mummy my castle!"She protested.
"You can come back another day."I said jumping back from the swiftly rising tide. I ran back home gripping Lydia tightly in my arms wrapped in my beach towel. I couldn't let the sea water touch her; I had a feeling something was going to happen. I just didn't know what.
*Harry's POV*
I gripped the slippery rock pulling and dragging myself up unto the rock. I grabbed Lou's hand pulling him up onto the rock with me. I pulled the potion out of my bag and took a swig.
"We have to make it last so we can stay for two weeks."I said gripping the rock as shooting pain ripped through my tail. It hurt because our entire skeletal structure was changing, our skin and muscle ripping and reforming. The pain finally subsided after several minutes and I wiggled my toes.
"They're so weird."I said and Louis laughed.
"Put your pants on and let's go, Mum found an old friend for us to stay with."I pulled the strange article of clothing over my newly formed legs watching Louis carefully so I didn't do it wrong. I wobbled slightly when I stood and fell forward off the rock but caught myself.
"Take it easy there; your first time on legs can be tricky."He said gripping my arm as I took my first steps.
"I'm OK, for once it’s you taking care of me huh?"I said as Louis loosened his grip.
"Let's get to the friend's."
*Janna's POV*
I tucked Lydia in and kissed her forehead.
"Goodnight my baby."
"Wait, do you think Daddy will ever come back?"She whispered sleepily.
"Maybe, I don't know."I replied turning off her light. I sat on my porch and stared at the rain that was starting to dribble down from the sky. If he did come back I would accept him again, for Lydia. If he would take me back, after all, he wasn't the one who ran away. What would he think about being a father, would he be OK with it? I didn't know anything about him really, only that he was a merman, he was the best looking boy I'd ever met and he was the father of my baby. I wiped away the tears that had crept out the corners of my eyes. I had never really cried about it. I had too much to worry about with a baby on the way then raising that baby. I didn't have time to cry and I still don't. I needed to stay strong for Lydia, because Daddy wasn't coming back. Why would he? He didn't know about the one thing he would definitely come back for.
