Chapter 16
Wow uhhh... I haven't updated this in like, 5 years... Sorry haha xD My brain is completely dry so... Mmm... I tried.
~
"Junmyeon!" Baekhyun called, waving his hands in the air to signal that he was free.
Junmyeon turned around and immediately spotted Baekhyun, throwing the ball over to him in the next second.
Baekhyun caught the ball and without even bouncing it once, he passed it to Sehun.
Sehun caught it easily with his height advantage and immediately threw it into the net, scoring- yet another -easy point.
The three gave each other high fives and Baekhyun turned his head to the scoreboard, grinning stupidly to himself.
They were a good 16 points ahead of BTS, and it was undoubtedly because of Baekhyun.
Not only did he try the hardest he could, he cheered the others up with his loud yells and random jokes. Although he knew that after this game, he'd have to face Chanyeol and his team in a different environment, he tried not to let anything catch up to him yet.
Just as Baekhyun was laughing and smiling to himself while bouncing the ball, he tried ducking under Jungkook's reach but instead, Jungkook elbowed him in the head, hard. The world spun around him and he gripped the ball, falling onto the ground because of the impact. Yet, to everyone but Baekhyun, it seemed as if he had just slipped. Jungkook didn't even noticed that he had hit Baekhyun because he kept trying to take the ball.
He held his head and groaned, feeling the pain directly in his temple spread and somehow dig itself into Baekhyun's brain. He squeezed his eyes shut and tried ignoring the pounding in his head, one sentence repeating in his head.
You're fine, the game's not over yet.
Baekhyun opened his eyes and blinked several times, trying to get the fuzzy edges to go away. He looked up and winced at the light, seeing Jungkook's slightly concerned but determined face.
Before Jungkook could take the ball, Baekhyun threw it in between his legs to Xiumin, letting out a breath now that he knew the ball wouldn't be taken from him.
Get up, you won't be able to do anything on the floor.
Baekhyun pushed himself back onto his feet and wobbled, his hands darting out to grab something and finding someone's arm.
"Baekhyun?" He heard Junmyeon and even though he knew Junmyeon was right beside him, it felt as if he was meters and meters away. "Baekhyun." Junmyeon's voice began to drown out and Baekhyun blinked again, trying not to let whatever it was swallow him out. Baekhyun's mind was foggy and hazy, he couldn't register anything Junmyeon was saying at all. "Are you..."
Baekhyun didn't get to hear the rest because his eyes slid close and he let go of trying to keep himself up, slipping into darkness.
~
"Concussion?"
"Yes, he was hit pretty hard in the temple."
"Isn't that really dangerous though?"
"Yeah, that's why he got a concussion, idiot."
"Well, sorry."
Baekhyun heard voices around him and he tried to make sense of what they were saying but he just couldn't.
"When he wakes up, don't tell him that I was here... Anyways, is he going to be okay?"
"Should you really be asking that when you're the one with the broken nose?"
"It's just a broken nose, something worse could've happened to him."
"Look at you, being such a caring lover to your boyfriend..."
"Shut up you stupid old man... I didn't tell you to be humiliated... Look, I got to go, my parents have something going on."
Baekhyun slowly opened his eyes and stared at the hospital ceiling dazedly, trying to register where he was and what happened. He stared at it blankly for a few seconds longer before he heard the click of a door closing but he ignored it.
The conversation he had heard just seconds ago slipped through the cracks in his mind and he completely forgot about it, only trying to figure out why everything hurt.
"Ah, Baekhyun!" Junmyeon exclaimed and Baekhyun winced at the sudden change in volume, wanting to pull the covers over his head but not being able to because of his log-like arms.
He turned his head and saw Junmyeon standing there alone, a small smile on his face. "How are you feeling?" He asked and Baekhyun opened his mouth to say something but then he just laid there without saying anything. Junmyeon shook his head and sighed. "Concussions really do make people stupid, don't they? I've had a number of them in my days and I understand what you're feeling like right now."
Something suddenly registered in his mind and he finally spoke. "Where's Chanyeol?" He asked and Junmyeon looked at him quizzically for a second before replying.
"He's... At home, I guess."
"I guess?" Baekhyun repeated and Junmyeon shrugged. "H-How is he?" Baekhyun questioned and Junmyeon smiled at him.
"Oh, he's supposedly laying in his death bed. He's cursing and swearing at you every few seconds too."
Baekhyun's eyes widened and he sat up but stopped abruptly when it shot pain through his head. "Ow... Are you serious?" Baekhyun asked and Junmyeon laughed.
"No, he's alright. Dara's helping him get better though so you don't have to worry."
Baekhyun smiled but felt a rock sink in his stomach. "That's good, is he going to be okay?"
"Should you really be asking that when you're the one with a concussion?"
"It's just a concussion. He broke his nose, Junmyeon," Baekhyun stated.
"How did you know he broke his nose?" Junmyeon questioned and Baekhyun was going to answer with an obvious answer before he suddenly wondered why he knew that Chanyeol's nose was broken.
"I don't know... I barely remember anything. The last thing I really remember is throwing the ball in Chanyeol's face... I really hope he's alright..."
"Look at you, being such a caring person to your boyfriend," Junmyeon teased.
"Shut up you stupid old fart, you don't know anything," Baekhyun scowled and Junmyeon laughed, remembering Chanyeol's answer to that sentence a few minutes ago.
"Anyways, we won the game by six points, a shocker. We all thought we were done for but Sehun suddenly pulled out these wacky moves," Junmyeon explained and Baekhyun laughed, imagining Sehun doing weird twists and dancing like a ballerina.
"That's good..."
"Will you be going to school tomorrow? How do you feel?" Junmyeon questioned and Baekhyun shrugged.
"I guess I can go... What time is it anyways?"
"9 in the evening."
"Nine?!" He exclaimed and Junmyeon nodded, chuckling at Baekhyun's reaction. "I have to get back! My parents were having guests over tonight," Baekhyun groaned in despair and Junmyeon patted his back.
"I can have my friend drive you back, that way you don't have to wait for the bus," Junmyeon stated and Baekhyun got off of the hospital bed slowly, trying not to increase the headache that he had. "His name's Yesung, he's older than us by a year." (Not really lol)
Junmyeon led Baekhyun downstairs and after pushing Junmyeon away from him, they got out of the hospital.
While walking to the car, Junmyeon explained that he told Baekhyun's parents, but they were apparently too busy to go check.
Baekhyun laughed sourly. "Yeah, they always say that. But I can't blame them... The guest coming over is really important. I don't really know their names but I just know that their names are Kim."
Junmyeon looked at Baekhyun surprisingly and smiled. "Hey! My parents were just going out to meet someone tonight too!"
"Oh! They're talking about something like a business agreement or something like that," Baekhyun recalled and Junmyeon nodded.
"Shotgun," he called and Baekhyun swore.
They got to the car and Yesung pulled down his window before they got in. "Right, one of my friends needed a ride too, hope you don't mind."
"Nope!" Baekhyun said cheerily and opened the door, climbing in hastily. "Hi, my name is Byun Baekhyun, you must be Yesung's frie—" Baekhyun stopped mid sentence when he saw familiar dark eyes staring back at him. "Ch-Chanyeol..." Baekhyun trailed off and Chanyeol gave him one last look before looking out the window.
Chanyeol inwardly sighed and tried letting his music cheer him up but it couldn't. He called me Chanyeol... Chanyeol thought and bit his lip. Why am I worrying if he was the one who threw the basketball in my face?
Chanyeol looked at Baekhyun and saw that the smaller was staring out the window. He so desperately wanted to reach over and grab Baekhyun's hand, feel his fingers in between his own...
But he couldn't.
Baekhyun was obviously upset with him for whatever reason, upset enough to hurt him.
Although Chanyeol still didn't blame Baekhyun for doing what he did, Chanyeol didn't feel like reaching out for Baekhyun quite just yet.
So he left his hand in between both of them on the seat in the middle, like he was reaching but he stopped. He stared back out the window and the song changed, changing to the instrumental song that he made himself.
He closed his eyes and remembered all that had happened this basketball season, the ups and downs- but mostly the ups.
It was hard for him to think about that, because most of these 'ups' included Baekhyun, who was sitting so close, but so far.
What he didn't expect to feel, though...
Was another hand on his.
Chanyeol's eyes snapped open and he turned to Baekhyun who had retreated his hand just as fast as it was placed there.
"S-Sorry... I didn't look where I was placing my hand..." Baekhyun mumbled and bit his lip, looking out the window once again.
Why won't you look at me in the eyes? Chanyeol wondered bitterly but stopped his thoughts from wandering. What did I do, Baekhyun?
~
"This is all such a coincidence!" Baekhyun yelled as he looked around the room. In his living room, there was Junmyeon, Chanyeol, and himself. "B-But I can't believe this! Arranged marriage?!" Baekhyun exclaimed with wide eyes.
"You've got to be kidding—" Junmyeon was cut off when he burst out laughing, falling out of his spot in front of an unamused Chanyeol.
"Awww, Junmyeon you ruined our K-drama..." Baekhyun pouted.
"Can you guys stop joking around? This is not a meeting to join three companies or whatever the hell you guys are thinking," Chanyeol grumbled and Junmyeon rolled his eyes.
"We're just trying to have fun while our parents talk in the other room. Loosen up, you're looking like an old grandma with a stick up her butt," Junmyeon stated.
Chanyeol rolled his eyes and put his arm on the armrest, leaning his head on his hand while closing his eyes.
He was honestly exhausted, and he didn't want to be stuck in the same room with these people at the moment.
One of them was annoying as heck, and the other he was in a tight situation with... It all made him more tired.
Their fathers were all music industry owners, and they were just talking about a collaborating that they were planning to do. They were even planning on using their children's voices in the music.
Chanyeol sighed and even felt himself begin to drift off into sleep before he heard a really loud noise.
He flinched and opened his eyes, glaring at Junmyeon who had basically screamed in his ear.
"You can't sleep here, Channie," Junmyeon taunted and Chanyeol sat straight, slapping Junmyeon in the face.
"And you can't call me that," Chanyeol stated and Junmyeon rolled his eyes.
"Sorry, only your boyfriend—er, girlfriend can call you that."
Baekhyun frowned and pursed his lips, shifting in his spot so that he was more comfortable.
At that moment, Junmyeon's parents came out of the room with smiles on their faces. "Okay honey, we're going home now, let's go. Say bye to your friends!"
Junmyeon said bye in a sickeningly sweet voice before he left with a smirk on his face, closing the front door behind him.
The living room was now left eerily silent as Baekhyun and Chanyeol sat there without saying anything.
No one knew what to say, and they didn't want to know either.
Chanyeol could feel the sleepiness coming to him once more, but he willed himself not to sleep. Baekhyun, on the other hand, didn't really care.
Baekhyun was closing his eyes, and Chanyeol was wondering if he was sleeping while sitting.
Chanyeol sat in that silence just watching Baekhyun, hearing the small ticks of the clock beside him. Baekhyun's eyes cracked open and Chanyeol immediately closed his eyes, pretending he wasn't staring.
A minute later, Chanyeol opened his eyes again and saw Baekhyun staring at him.
This time, none of them looked away until Baekhyun's eyes began to slowly droop, sleepiness washing over him.
Chanyeol felt his heart swell when he saw Baekhyun falling asleep in front of him, and after another five minutes of watching Baekhyun sleep, he stood up, walking closer.
He bent down and looked at Baekhyun's face closer, self-consciously trying to count each eyelash.
Baekhyun's head leaned to one side and his body began tilting as he fell into a deeper sleep.
Chanyeol caught him with one arm and used the other to grab a pillow, placing it on the armrest before slowly lowering Baekhyun down and placing his head on the pillow.
Chanyeol watched Baekhyun for another second before he wandered into a random room in the house, in search of a blanket.
He figured he was in Baekhyun's room when he saw the sky blue painted walls and the picture frames on the desk.
He walked closer and picked one up, examining a Baekhyun that he guessed was in elementary school.
Chanyeol chuckled to himself, looking at the ugly bowl cut Baekhyun had. "What a loser," he said to himself before placing the picture frame down hesitatingly, wanting to stare at it longer.
He grabbed the extra blanket at the edge of the bed and shuffled out of the room, turning off the lights and closing the door.
He made his way back to the living room and saw Baekhyun exactly where he left him, except his body was now slightly curled into a ball.
Chanyeol draped the blanket onto Baekhyun and almost laughed out loud at the picture on the fabric.
"Winnie the Pooh," Chanyeol remarked quietly.
He didn't know what he was doing, but he sat down on the ground crisscrossed, his face closer to Baekhyun's. He put his forehead onto the couch and breathed in, wanting so bad to just fall asleep.
Baekhyun stirred in his sleep and Chanyeol looked up, smiling to himself when he heard some cute puppy noises.
Chanyeol reached up to Baekhyun's face and brushed some hair out of his face, his touch similar to a ghost's.
To Chanyeol, Baekhyun was so fragile, equivalent to an extravagant porcelain doll. Chanyeol couldn't help but want to protect him and to want to wrap him up in his arms.
He felt bad because he had already made Baekhyun hurt. For whatever he did, and for not being there when Baekhyun had gotten hit that day.
Chanyeol traced his finger over Baekhyun's face, smiling at him. He leaned in and closed his eyes, placing a butterfly kiss on Baekhyun's cheek. He let his lips stay on Baekhyun's skin for a second too long before he pulled away and stood up, walking to the other side of the room and dropping onto the single couch.
For the rest of his time, he watched Baekhyun until he couldn't keep his eyes open anymore, falling asleep on spot with Baekhyun on his mind.
~
Baekhyun had a dream that night. He dreamt that Chanyeol kissed him on the cheek.
Even though he didn't know that it wasn't a dream, he felt a little giddy when he woke up.
He didn't expect to see the man in his dreams across from him, though.
There Chanyeol was, sleeping in an awkward position on the opposite side of the room.
Baekhyun sat up and felt the blanket on him fall. He looked at it and realized that it was the extra one that he kept with him all the time.
Baekhyun looked back over at Chanyeol and wondered that maybe... Possibly... It was him that put it on Baekhyun.
Baekhyun shook his head and stood up, folding the blanket and bringing it with him as he moved closer to Chanyeol.
He smiled to himself when he saw Chanyeol's face.
He resembled an angel to Baekhyun, and with everything that he's done to Baekhyun, he probably was. Though of course, Baekhyun couldn't forget everything else that Chanyeol has said to him. But then again he just couldn't... Not like Chanyeol. There was everything to like about him.
His stupid laugh, his dumb smiles, his unamusing jokes, his guitar playing, the way he looked at things... Everything struck Baekhyun with such a strong feeling that Baekhyun usually felt like he couldn't breathe when he was around Chanyeol. His throat would close up, and the only thing registering in his body was the beating of his heart and Chanyeol. Chanyeol's actions, Chanyeol's words, Chanyeol's touch, Chanyeol's whole existence.
Baekhyun turned around and looked out the window at the rising sun, admiring the dull gray-blue in the sky.
He was quite fond of winter skies, even if they were void of colour. It gave him a calm feeling, resembling the person sitting in the couch at the moment.
There was always so much more hidden in the sky than just the colours and clouds, and Baekhyun wanted to know.
Baekhyun looked at Chanyeol's face and smiled, placing the blanket on Chanyeol.
"You can have him. You can have Winnie the Pooh," Baekhyun spoke to the sleeping Chanyeol and was about to walk away before he felt a hand on his wrist. Baekhyun turned around and looked at Chanyeol who now had his eyes opened.
"Sorry, you can take it back...
I already have my Winnie the Pooh."
