Chapter 14

Make sure you read my author's note at the end when you're done. It's about a contest and meetup in New York :)

Luke's POV

"Do you want me to come in with you? Or do you want to do this alone?" Delilah asks as we sit in her car. We're parked inside my drive way, and I need to talk to my dad.

"I think I can do this alone. I'll call you later, probably." I start getting out of the car, but Delilah reaches for my shoulder.

"You'll be okay. Love you."

I nod quickly and try not to start crying again. I know that if I say anything back, I'll start crying. I don't want to cry  before even talking to my dad. I quickly kiss Delilah and leave.

I slowly walk up the stairs and go inside. I'm filled with sadness, anger, and confusion. I can't keep my thoughts straight, and I have so many questions. I feel mad at the whole world, but I also feel like I could break down crying any second. I thought I would never have to feel this terrible again, but I've been proven wrong.

I find my dad sitting at the kitchen table, like he's waiting for me. We both stare at each other, neither of us saying anything. I don't even know what to say.

"I heard you talked to Calum," my dad says, breaking the silence.

"Why didn't you tell me?" I ask quietly, trying not to get too angry. Sometimes I can't help getting angry though, and I can already feel it building up inside me. I sit at the chair opposite from him and concentrate on the stain in the center of the table so I don't focus on all my emotions.

"I'm really sorry, Luke. I wanted to tell you, but I promised your mom," he tells me.

"Why would you promise her something like that? I'm your son! You guys can't just keep that from me!"

"We did it to protect you and your well-being. We weren't sure how you would react. We did what we thought was best."

"I'm almost 18. You don't have to protect me. I'm getting better. I wouldn't have been so upset if you had just told me."

"I'm sorry."

"Stop saying sorry. It doesn't change anything. I never wanna hear anyone say that again. How long have you known?" I shoot out, finally looking up from the stain on the table and at my dad.

"Since the start..."

I run my hands through my hair and let out a shaky breath. Of course he's known since the start. Everyone but me has known. I should've expected that.

"Can you tell me everything you know?" I ask quietly. "I don't even know what kind of cancer she has." I can feel my hands start to get shaky.

My dad nods. "So, she has breast cancer, which is very common for women. It hasn't spread, since it was caught early. Her doctors think it won't be hard to treat, and she should be okay."

Everyone always says people will be okay. Okay has no depth. It's not good, it's not bad. There's nothing to it. How am I supposed to believe that my mom will be okay? Everyone always says they're okay when they're not. It's a lie. It's a disappointment.

"How do they treat it?" I ask.

"She decided to have it removed, but she has to have some chemo before in order to shrink the tumor, and make it operable. None of that process has started yet, though. Right now they're preparing her for chemo."

"Why is she in the hospital, then?"

"Something happened with one of her medications and made some of her blood levels drop. That's all I got from what Calum told me."

"Is Cal with her a lot?"

My dad nods. "Your grandparents and Calum have been helping her out."

"What's gonna happen once she starts chemo and has surgery? She can't be alone."

"About that..."

I feel my heart rate start speeding, and I can hear it pounding in my chest. I feel like I'm about to pass out. This can't be happening.

"I'm moving back, aren't I?" I choke out.

My dad bites on his lip nervously. "We're moving back."

"We? Are you and mom..."

"No. We all think it's best that she isn't alone and has another adult taking care of her. We don't want to have you have to take care of her, since that's a lot of pressure. I can get my old job back too and work from home."

"What about me? What about my job? What about Delilah? Are we ever gonna come back to Maine?"

"We can take care of your job, they'll understand. We're not selling the house, don't worry. Delilah will still be here for you."

I take a deep breath. "When do we leave?"

"It wasn't supposed to be for another month, but now with this happening, it's Tuesday."

Today is Friday. That is not enough time. That's not even enough time for me to fully comprehend and accept everything my dad just told me. I don't think I'll ever accept it.

"You're seriously giving me four days to pack everything up?" I say, quietly.

"I'm really sorry, Luke. It wasn't supposed to happen like this."

"Yeah, nothing's supposed to happen like this, but it does. And there's nothing I can do about it. I can't magically make Mom's cancer be cured. But it's fine. I'll just pack up and move back and get depressed again. It's totally fine. Mom will be okay, like you say. Whatever." I get up from the table and walk into my room, locking the door. I hear my dad call me, but I don't go back out. I need some time to myself.

My mom has cancer. I'm moving back to Australia. I'm leaving Delilah. I'm leaving everything that has made me happy these past few months. I'm going back to everything that makes me sad. I might have also ruined everything with my best friend.

I lean against the edge of my bed and start crying all over again. Everything is a mess. Just when I felt like my life was finally stable, it is falling to pieces. It's like building up a skyscraper and having a tornado knock it down brick by brick.

I have no idea how I'm going to tell Delilah that I'm moving. I have no idea how long I'll be gone. She could meet someone else. She might not want to be in a long distance relationship. Couples break up when they're far away. Maybe we just weren't meant to be. Maybe in another life or at another time, things would have been great for us.

I don't even want to think about going back to Australia. So many bad memories are there that I can't erase. I feel like everyone there has forgotten about me, too. Now just wait until everyone finds out my mom has cancer, and suddenly pities me all over again. I don't want to have to deal with that.

Then there's Calum. I screamed at him on the phone, even though none of this is his fault. He was just helping out like always. I decide to call Calum and try to fix things. Maybe he'll accept my apology since I'm such an emotional mess.

He picks up after a few rings.

"I thought you never wanted to talk again?" Calum says quietly. He sounds tired and upset.

"I didn't mean it. I'm sorry," I say through all my tears.

"Oh my, God, Luke. Don't apologize. Are you alright?"

"Do I sound alright? I can barely breathe."

"Take some deep breaths. Relax. Did your dad tell you everything?"

"If everything is that my mom has breast cancer, and I'm moving back to Australia, then yes." It's taking me awhile to talk because of all my crying and hiccups from trying to breathe. "Thanks for helping out my mom. You're a way better friend to me than I am to you."

"Don't say that. I don't mind helping. That's what friends are for."

I sniff a few times. Calum has always been there for me through everything. He has never once let me down. There's not a lot of people that would stick with me like he has. I don't think I'll ever be as great a friend as he is.

I was mad because Calum had known about my mom being sick when I hadn't. I'm her son and I didn't know, but my best friend did. It hurt me to know that. But I understand that Calum just wanted to help, and I never got to hear his side of the story. I don't know how he found out, but I don't think I want to know right now. I just want to know about my mom and how she is doing.

"Is my mom doing badly?" I ask.

"She's doing better now. The doctor's brought her levels back up so she's a little more stable. Don't worry. You'll be here soon."

"Am I gonna be shocked when I see her?"

"No, not really. She's pretty much the same Liz as before. She's just more tired now, that's all. Her medicine does that to her."

"So can I talk to her?"

"She's asleep right now," Calum says.

"Oh, okay. You really didn't have to do this. It's your summer, and you're taking care of my mom. I don't know how to thank you."

"You don't have to thank me. If our situations were switched, I know you'd do this for me. You don't give yourself credit for being so caring, Luke."

I smile a little and wipe the tears off my face.

"Cal?" I whisper.

"Yeah?"

"I'm scared. What do you think will happen?"

Calum sighs. "I don't know. I guess we'll just need to see how everything works out."
