Chapter 4
Delilah's POV
I get to Luke's house to pick Lucy up, and both of them are thankfully okay. Lucy didn't get lost this time, and Luke isn't stressed. It seems like everything went well.
"Today was so fun!" Lucy yells when I walk in.
"Was it?" I ask her, looking up at Luke.
He nods and smiles. "Told you I could do it."
I smile. "What'd you guys do today?"
"We played with a balloon, and I named it Purpley, but then I killed it, but it's okay because Luke said he'd get me more balloons later, right?" Lucy says, tugging on Luke's hand.
"Right," he says.
"And now it's later, so let's go get some balloons!" Lucy says.
"I don't know, Lucy. Maybe another day," I tell her. I really don't feel like going to get her a bunch of balloons.
She frowns. "But I miss my friend."
"I promised," Luke mouths to me.
I sigh. "Alright, let's go get some balloons then."
"Yay!" Lucy yells.
We all get in the car, and Lucy is still in her pajamas, but doesn't seem to care. All she cares about it getting more balloons.
I'm honestly surprised today went smoothly. I thought something would happen, and Luke would get nervous. But he was totally fine. He's definitely changed a lot in the past few months.
Lucy keeps talking about what kind of balloons she wants and what she's going to name them. I don't see why she's so excited about balloons, but by tomorrow she'll be bored with them.
Luke keeps trying to talk to me, but gets interrupted by Lucy every time. He gives up and just listens to Lucy ramble on about balloons.
My phone vibrates, and I look to see a text from Ashton. I reach over for my phone to respond.
"Delilah," Luke says quietly.
"Yeah?" I ask. He's glaring at my hand, which is holding my phone.
Then I realize.
"Oh, my God, Luke. I'm sorry. I didn't realize-"
"Pull over."
"Luke, I'm sorry."
He shakes his head. "Just pull over, right now." He runs his hands through his hair and takes some deep breaths.
I pull over to the side of the road, and Luke immediately gets out of the car and starts walking back home.
"Where's he going?" Lucy asks quietly.
"I don't know," I tell her, getting out of the car and bringing her with me to follow Luke.
"Luke!" I yell, hoping he'll turn around.
"Just leave me alone," he says, not even bothering to look back.
"I didn't mean to," I yell. "I'm sorry!"
Lucy has to run quickly to keep up with my wide pace, and she's staying quiet.
Luke whips around. "You know how much anxiety getting into cars gives me. You know how much I have to trust someone to even get into a car with them. You know she died from texting me!"
"Who died?" Lucy whispers.
"I didn't- I honestly didn't mean to. It's a habit," I tell him.
He rolls his eyes. "You can stop habits. You can't stop death. What if we crashed in that split second you picked up your phone? What if you went through a red light? You don't know what could have happened!"
"I shouldn't have, I really am sorry."
"I just need to go home," he tells me, turning back around.
"Luke, wait!" I yell.
I see him shake his head and continue walking down the street. He ignores me and just keeps walking farther away.
"Is Luke okay?" Lucy asks me as she watches him.
I shrug. "He's just a little upset now, that's all."
"Who died?" she asks again.
I don't answer, and I grab her hand and walk back to the car.
I can't believe how stupid I am. I should have realized what I was doing, especially with Luke in the car. I could have messed everything up. He may not talk to me for awhile now, if he ever does. You never know with him.
Lucy stays quiet in the car, and when I look back in the mirror to make sure she's okay, I notice she's crying. Great. Now she's upset.
"Lucy, what's wrong?"
"Did I make Luke mad?" she whispers, sniffing.
"No, no! I did. You didn't."
"Are you sure? Is he mad because Purpley died, and I killed her? Is that who died?" she asks.
"No. I promise. Luke loves you very much. He's not mad at you."
She sniffs again. "But I don't want him to be mad at you either."
"Don't worry, it'll be okay."
"How do you know?"
"Because, I just do."
But I don't. I honestly don't know if it will be okay. I don't know when Luke will talk to me, or even forgive me. It takes him a long time to trust someone, and I could have just lost all his trust.
"We don't have to get balloons," Lucy says after a few minutes.
I had forgotten about even getting the balloons. I had just been driving aimlessly around town. I start driving home, neither of us saying anything else.
We get home, and Lucy decides to draw Luke a picture again. I go to my room, and call Luke. I doubt he will answer, but it's worth a shot.
After two rings, I get sent to voice mail.
"Hey, it's Luke. I don't like talking on the phone, but leave a message if you want," his voicemail says. It beeps, but I don't say anything for a few seconds.
"Hi. It's me. I'm really sorry. Call me back when you're okay," I say.
He probably won't call me back.
A few minutes later, someone knocks on my bedroom door. I get hopeful that it may be Luke, but then Ashton walks in.
"What are you doing here?" I ask him.
"I saw Luke sitting on the sidewalk. He was having a panic attack."
I close my eyes tightly and put my head in my hands.
"He told me what happened," Ashton says, sitting beside me.
"How mad is he?"
"He's more afraid than mad. He's scared that you'll do it again, and something will happen. He's afraid to lose you."
"Did he say that?"
Ashton nods. "He is mad, though. He said he needs some alone time. I'm sorry for texting you."
"It's okay, you didn't know. It's my fault, not yours."
We don't say anything for awhile.
"How bad was his panic attack?" I ask him.
He shrugs. "It's not the worst he's ever had. He was just a little shaken up."
"I'm so stupid. I should have realized."
"It could have been me, his dad, anyone really. Everyone does it."
"But we shouldn't. And I know him better than anyone else. I should have known."
"Don't be too hard on yourself. He'll forgive you."
"I doubt it."
"He will. He likes you too much not to."
I smile a little. Hopefully Ashton's right.
"Just give him some time," Ashton says. "He just needs to be alone right now to process it. The second you picked up your phone, he probably had a flashback and was picturing you as Delia."
"When did he tell you about her?" I ask. I wasn't sure if Luke had ever told Ashton.
Ashton shrugs. "He told me a little about her awhile ago. He explained more when I saw him today, though."
I need to find a way to make it up to Luke. I don't know what exactly is going through his mind right now, but it can't be good. I never meant to hurt him.
Ashton stays for a little while longer, and he tries his best to make me feel better. I still feel like a horrible person. Luke is so upset, and I made him so nervous.
I debate texting him, but decide against it. Ashton is right, he just needs some time alone.
I hope Luke can forgive me.
