Chapter 7
Delilah's POV
Lucy comes running into my room and continuously pokes my arm until I acknowledge her.
"Yes, Lucy?" I ask, turning away from my phone and looking at Lucy.
"Mommy wants to talk to you," she says, running out of my room giggling.
I find my mom downstairs folding laundry.
"Lucy said you wanted to talk?" I ask quietly. I'm not sure what there is to talk about, I haven't done anything bad lately as far as I know.
"About Luke!" Lucy yells happily from where she's sitting.
I scrunch my eyebrows in confusion. "What about Luke?" I ask.
"I think it would be a nice idea to invite him over for dinner," my mom says, smiling.
"He's already been over for dinner once. At Thanksgiving."
"I know, but that was a long time ago. You always seem to be with him now, and I know you two are dating. I just think it would be a good idea. So we can know him more, now that he's talking and spending so much time with you."
I shrug. I don't really want Luke over for dinner with my family. It might be awkward, and he might feel really nervous. With his parents, it's different. I've known his dad for a few years, and his mom was really easy to talk to. But Luke is Luke, and my parents are my parents.
"I guess I can ask him. He'll probably say no," I tell my mom. "Is that all you wanted to talk about?"
My mom nods. "Great! He can come over tonight if he's free!"
"Okay, I'll call him right now," I tell my mom, trying to sound as excited as she does.
I call Luke, and he picks up after a few rings.
"Hey!" he says happily.
"Are you free tonight?"
"Yeah, I'm free, like, 99.9% of my life," he says laughing.
"Right. My mom wants you to come over for dinner. Only if you want to."
"Your mom?"
I realize how awkward that sounds. "Well, me too. But it's my mom's idea. She wants to get to know you better. You don't have to. I understand if you don't."
"Yeah, sure."
"Really?"
"Mm hmm. Your mom should know who you're dating! Plus, I wasn't exactly a nice guest last time. She probably doesn't like me that much right now."
I laugh. "No, she does. She just thinks you're quiet."
Luke laughs quietly. "So what time should I come over?"
"Whenever you want, I guess."
"Is now good?"
I smile. "Yeah, now is good."
"Okay, be right there."
I go tell my mom that Luke is coming, and she seems way more excited than she should be. Lucy is equally excited.
A few minutes later, Luke knocks at the door. Usually he just walks in because he knows I'm the only one home, or it's only Lucy and me. I guess he's trying to make a good impression now.
I open the door, and Luke smiles widely.
"Hey," he says, kissing me quickly.
I smile. "Hi."
We walk inside, and I pull him into the living room where my mom is.
"Mom, here's Luke. Even though you've already met," I say.
"Hi, Luke! It's so nice to see you again!" my mom says, smiling widely.
"Hi, uh-" Luke's cheeks redden and I can tell he doesn't remember my mom's name.
"Marie," my mom says.
"Right. Marie. Sorry," he says, laughing quietly.
"Don't worry about it! It's been a few months," my mom says. "So, how have you been?"
"I've been doing pretty good," Luke says, nodding.
My step dad walks in. "Hey, Luke! Nice to see you again."
"Cory," I whisper to Luke quickly in case he doesn't remember his name either.
"Nice to see you too, Cory," Luke says, looking at me from the corner of his eyes and smiling.
"I ordered pizza, is that okay with you?" my mom asks.
"Yeah, that's fine," Luke tells her.
Cory asks Luke a lot of questions, and Luke answers them all. They're just basic questions, like how he's enjoying Maine or what he's been doing. It's nothing too awkward to answer.
Lucy walks in and reaches up to Luke so she can sit on his lap. Luke picks her up, and she smiles. Luke bounces his legs and Lucy laughs.
I honestly thought Luke would be extremely nervous around my parents. He doesn't seem too nervous though, he seems to be fine. He's talking a lot and smiling a lot. He's definitely changed in the past few months. When he came for Thanksgiving, he was really rude and kept to himself. He didn't even talk back then, so it's not like my family could really get to know him.
We continue talking until the pizza comes, and we head into the dining room. Luke sits in between Lucy and me and hands us both a slice of pizza. He cuts Lucy's slice in half. I'm surprised he knows to do that.
My mom looks surprised too and raises her eyebrows at me. She gives me a thumbs up and I laugh.
"So, Luke, do you go to school with Delilah?" Cory asks.
Luke clears his throat. "I dropped out of school last year."
"Oh, why's that?" he asks, tilting his head to the side.
"Cory," I say. He's probably making Luke feel awkward.
"No, no, it's fine. I developed some anxiety and mood disorders, so it kind of had to happen because I missed a month of school at one point. I tried online school, but it didn't do much."
"Have you ever thought about getting your GED?"
I sigh and look at Luke.
"I've thought about it. If I want to do anything in life, I'm going to need some sort of schooling."
I look at Luke surprised. I didn't know he had been thinking about that. "You have?"
Luke nods and takes a bite of his pizza.
"Do you have a job?" my mom asks.
I feel like they're interrogating him.
Luke shakes his head. "I've been looking at some, Delilah's been helping too. I think I'm going to set up an interview next week for one of them."
It's been a little over a week since he told me he wanted a job. He's been debating every day if he actually wants to set up an interview. He's been worrying too much to make one though.
"What about a restaurant? My friend owns one a few minutes away. I could talk to him if you'd like," Cory says.
Luke smiles and looks at me then back to Cory. "Really? That'd be great, thanks!"
"I thought you didn't want to work at a restaurant?" I ask him, laughing.
He shrugs. "I don't really wanna work anywhere, but I need to."
I roll my eyes and laugh.
Lucy pokes Luke, and he looks over at her. She hands him her pizza crust because she doesn't like it.
Luke smiles and puts the crust on his plate.
My mom clears her throat. "When did you start talking again?" my mom asks Luke.
Luke looks at me. "December, right? So a little over two months?"
I nod. I feels like longer than two months. Now, Luke talking is normal to me because I'm so used to the sound of his voice.
"That's great!" my mom says.
After we're done eating, Luke and I head to my room.
"Your parents are nice," Luke says, sitting on top of my bed.
"You think?"
"Yeah. They seemed like they really wanted to get to know me. I liked that. Not a lot of people are like that."
I sit beside him and hold both his hands. "They seem to really like you."
He shrugs and rubs his thumbs against the top of my hands. "Do you really think Cory could get me that job?"
"Probably."
Luke smiles. "I'd like that."
"Are you really thinking about getting your GED?"
Luke nods. "I've thought about it a little. Don't you think it'd be good?"
"I think it's a great idea! Then, if you wanted to go to college, you could."
"I don't know about college just yet. That's too far ahead."
"I know. Just saying."
Luke pulls me closer. "Thanks for having me over. It was nice."
"Thanks for coming. I thought you wouldn't want to."
"Of course I'd want to!" He says, kissing my forehead.
I smile. "I like this Luke," I blurt out.
"What?"
"I like you talking and being happy and wanting to try new things. I liked you before too, but now you're even better."
"I like this me, too." His cheeks redden. "You know what else I like?"
"What?"
"You," he says, leaning in and kissing me.
"Oh, really?" I say, pulling away for a second.
"Mm hmm," he says against my lips.
After a few seconds, there's a knock at my door, and we quickly pull away from each other. Luke's eyes widen, and he quickly rubs his lips. He jumps up from my bed and leans against it instead of sitting beside me.
My mom peeks her head in. "We have dessert if you want some," she says.
"Okay. We'll be out soon," I tell her.
My mom smiles and leaves.
Luke starts laughing. "Think she knows we were just making out?"
"Totally," I say, leaning in again.
"What about dessert?" he says in between kisses.
"That can wait."
