Chapter One
The morning sunlight spilled through the half-drawn curtains of their apartment tracing gold across the wooden floorboards and pooling near the end of their living room.
Taehyung stirred first, blinking against the soft warmth, his hair all messy and tangled halo against the pillow, one under his head and one between his legs, he always needs an extra pillow for hugging himself to sleep. For a moment, he stayed still, watching the quiet sunrise and the sunlight tracing along the bottom of his bed.
This was his favorite part of the mornings, those few unhurried minutes before the world expected anything from them.
At the other end of the apartment, next to Taehyung's room, was Jungkook all sprawled on his back, one hand resting across his stomach, the other tangled loosely in the sheets. His hair was a mess, sticking out in every possible direction, but he looked annoyingly perfect like this.
Taehyung opened Jungkook's bedroom door, unannounced. Jungkook lifts his head up to see who it was, obviously knowing it's Taehyung. It's his normal routine, barging in unannounced, eyes half closed, a pillow under his arm, walking like a half-awakened zombie, and jumps onto
Jungkook's bed. And as usual, Jungkook sighed.
Taehyung was silent, said nothing.
"You're staring again," Jungkook mumbled without opening his eyes.
Taehyung left out an annoying snort. "You are so annoyingly looking good even with a messy, sleepy hair."
Jungkook's lips twitched upwards, thinking Taehyung is being ridiculous again.
"Get away from me, man, before I punch you through a wall!" he said, covering his face with his right elbow.
"Hey!" Taehyung groaned dramatically, "That's emotional damage right there, man and also domestic abuse." He said, smiling.
They ended up laughing like children fighting over a toy, neither really trying to win. This was how it always was between them, teasing, quiet comfort between best of friends.
Jungkook and Taehyung have lived together since they were done schooling, in an apartment Taehyung's dad bought for them in the center of Seoul, quite expensive as well. Their apartment reflected that rhythm too, a blend of shared history and quiet chaos. A bookshelf crowded with both of their favorite music collection and gaming collectibles. A separate wall dotted with Polaroids, every milestone they celebrated since childhood. A huge kitchen with a dining table at the center.
Jungkook finally opened his eyes fully. "We're still on for tonight?"
Taehyung raised an eyebrow. "Unless you're suddenly allergic to popcorn and movie nights."
"Hmm. I'll take that as a yes," he said, stretching like a cat.
Taehyung pushed herself up, stretching himself. He didn't know it yet, but he'd remember this morning for a long time, the quietness, the sunlight, the excitement to have some fun end of the day. It was the kind of day that felt safe.
And safety, he's learn soon enough, could vanish like a breath on glass.
