The scent of Fresh coffee filled the apartment, mingling with the faint sweetness of cinnamon from the bread Taehyung toasted every weekend. Morning light pooled through the kitchen window, painting the table in soft amber. Taehyung hummed under his breath as he flipped through the pages of a half-read manga magazine, one knee pulled up to his chest. It was their little ritual, a slow morning, unhurried, untouched by the world outside.
Jungkook appeared from the room with damp hair, wearing a black T-shirt that he always loved on him. He stretched himself like he was about to do some exercise, feeling slightly sleepy.
"It's nice weather," he said.
"You're late for breakfast," Taehyung replied, without looking up.
"You'd better have some toast saved for me," said Jungkook.
Taehyung rolled his eyes. Jungkook sat down across from Taehyung, stealing a slice of toast off Taehyung's plate like he always did. He let him. He always did.
Outside, Seoul was already alive. The faint rumble of buses on the main road echoed through the slightly open window, mixed with the distant calls of taxi drivers and the chatter of people heading to work. The city had its own heartbeat, steady and familiar.
Their lives had fallen into a rhythm since their childhood. Mornings together, work during the day, long chilling time on the weekends, movie nights on Fridays to relax after a long week. Today was their favorite, the movie night. No heavy clothes, just two best friends, their familiar mall, their favorite theater, easy clothes, and a lot of junk food.
"Do you remember the first time we went to the movies?" Taehyung asked, stirring his coffee absently.
Jungkook grinned instantly. "You mean when you tripped over a carpet and ended up spilling half the popcorn on the guy in front of us?"
"Yeah, right!" Taehyung scoffed.
Jungkook laughed.
They got ready to go out, and each of them went to their own rooms to get themselves ready. In another hour, they'd drive out to The Lotte World Tower, which is a mall with everything you need, park in their usual corner, grab their usual snacks, and sit in their usual seats.
There was no warning. No sign that today was anything different. The sun shone as it always did.
The city moved as it always had.
Neither of them knew.
Tonight, the world would fold in on itself.
***
At the far end of South Korea, beyond the noise and glitter of Seoul, nestled a humble little town in Busan. Life there was simple, quiet, and often hard. Amid the endless fields where farmers toiled from dawn to dusk, lived the Park family — a poor but warm-hearted household that carried dreams far bigger than their means.
Among them was Park Soohee, a 25-year-old girl with a fire in her eyes and a dream too vast for the small world around her. She wanted to be someone — an actress — a name people would know, a face they would recognize. For years, she had been teased, labeled "the poor girl," yet she never let those words break her. If anything, they only strengthened her resolve to rise above them one day.
Her chance finally came in the form of a single ticket — an invitation to watch a movie in Seoul, the dazzling heart of South Korea. It was her reward for winning a small school drama contest, one that had showcased her natural gift for acting. That ticket wasn't just a pass to a movie; it was a glimpse into the world she longed to be part of.
For days, Soohee couldn't sleep. The thought of setting foot in Seoul — of seeing the enormous Lotte World Tower with her own eyes — filled her with restless excitement. She imagined the shining glass walls, the busy streets, the endless shops and lights. To her, Seoul was like another planet, and she was an alien stepping into it for the first time.
That morning, the sky blushed with early sunlight as she packed for the journey. Her mother was preparing breakfast when Soohee burst into the kitchen, eyes bright.
"Omma, do you know the mall I'm going to has a hundred and twenty-three floors?" she said, her mouth wide open in awe.
Her mother paused mid-stir, eyebrows lifting. "A hundred and twenty-three? Can people even build something that tall?"
Soohee nodded, still astonished. "Apparently, they can — and they did! I heard there are shopping malls, gaming centers, even an aquarium inside!"
Her mother smiled softly, shaking her head in disbelief. "Wow... Seoul really is another world. Do you want some pocket money, dear? Appa and I can manage a little, so you can look around after the movie."
Soohee quickly shook her head. "No, no, it's okay. Just give me the train fare. That's more than enough."
She smiled, her usual gentle, grateful smile, the kind that always made her mother's heart ache a little. Soohee had grown up understanding struggle, learning early how to survive with little and to appreciate even less. She was kind-hearted and humble, always putting others before herself.
She dressed simply, as she always did, her old pair of blue jeans, slightly faded from years of wear, and her favorite red hoodie, a little frayed at the sleeves but still her "special occasion" outfit. She smoothed her hair, looked at herself in the small cracked mirror by the door, and let out a deep breath.
"Today's the day," she whispered to her reflection.
After bidding tearful goodbyes to her parents and her two younger sisters, she made her way to the village bus station. The bus ride would take her to the train, and the train would carry her to a new world — a city of dreams and lights she had only ever seen on TV.
Soohee pressed her forehead to the cool glass of the window as the bus began to move, watching the fields and small houses shrink behind her. Her heart was pounding with anticipation, excitement, and just a little fear. She smiled, unaware that this journey — one she thought would be the happiest of her life — was about to become the most unforgettable night she would ever live through.
