Chapter 20

Victor Henson- Dallas, Texas

2:00 am CST

Victor was asleep in his bed when there was a loud banging sound on his door, startling the cowboy awake.

He sat up with a loud gasp, and his heart pounded hard and fast in his chest while he grew shocked and surprised that someone was waking him up this early. His whole body was tense and all he wanted to do was hide from this unknown threat that was banging on his door.

But what if it was his only friend..?

He pulled his covers off of his body and bolted out of bed when that thought crossed his mind.

Victor grabbed his shotgun as a just in case before he flung open his bedroom door and rushed to the front door.

He cocked the gun and flung open the front door without checking to see who it was, and a startled gasp escaped from the person in front of him while they took a step back, which he instantly recognized as the person who had thought it was.

"Jules?" Victor asked and lowered the gun just a tad, even though he kept a hard grip on his gun because he had no idea if it was her or not or if there was an immediate threat waiting to happen behind her. "Is that you?"

"No, it's a ghost," his best friend said, her voice barely above a whisper and becoming sarcastic. "Yes, it's me. Are you seriously going to shoot in the dark without turning on the light and seeing who it is first?"

"Yes," Victor replied, earning a small tsk from the female in front of him. He flicked on the porch light to see that not only was his best friend on his doorstep but two burly men stood behind her, and the hair on the back of his neck stood at attention.

"Shit," he said and lifted his shotgun again but made sure to only point it at them with narrowed eyes and a scowl on his face. "Get in the house, Jules," he said and placed his finger on the trigger. His voice was cold and dark, and he knew that he looked intimidating to the two men. "Is this the reason as to why you were banging on my door?"

The two men raised their hands in surrender and took a step away from the pair of friends, and Victor watched them with his gun pointed at them, not caring if Jules hadn't moved from that spot.

Jules scoffed a laugh and rolled her eyes. "No," she said and placed her hand on the gun, lowering the gun just a tad, and Victor let her do that, even though his finger was on the trigger. "They are friends, too. You just sleep like a log, Vic, and that is why there was some banging on the door."

Victor rolled his eyes and finally, took his finger off of the trigger. "I work long and hard hours, Jules," he said sarcastically before he made sure that the gun wouldn't accidentally discharge. "Of course I sleep like a log."

"Hmph." She bit back a small smile and tucked her head closer to her chest, growing serious. "Can we come in?" she asked. "Please? There are some things that we need to discuss."

Victor glanced at the two men, who slowly started to relax underneath his gaze, before he looked at her with a small frown on his face. "Does this have to deal with the men?" he asked and raised an eyebrow in question.

"Yes," she said and nodded. She hesitated and licked her lips before she cleared her throat and shifted on her feet. "And they are there to help you..."

"Help me?" he asked and raised an eyebrow in question while he studied her. "And what do you mean by that?"

"Why don't we talk inside before we do something else?" Jules asked and shook her head. "Please. We know about your gift."

The hair on Victor's neck stood at attention. He narrowed his eyes and scowled, pressing his lips into a thin line. "And what do you mean about my gift?" he asked coldly while his whole body grew tense.

"Well, the ground shifting from one way to another and whatnot," she said, and her cheeks turned red. "I mean, we know that you can control the Earth and rocks and everything."

Victor blinked and blinked again, pressing his lips into a thinner line. He didn't say a word and didn't move from his spot in front of the door. His whole body was tense, and his heart pounded hard and fast in his chest.

Jules bit back a tired sigh and shook her head, rubbing the back of her neck while she grew sheepish. "There is a lot that has been hidden from you for your protection and others."

"Others?" Victor asked and raised an eyebrow in question. The hair on the back of his neck stood further at attention. "What do you mean by others?"

"Can we enter your house before I tell you?" she asked. "Please?"

Victor studied his best friend before he lowered the gun all the way. "Fine," he said and made sure that the safety was on so that there would be no accidental discharge in his house. "You can enter and so can your friends."

He started to walk back into the house while he turned on the lights, going directly to the living room where he could talk to them from there.

"Can you put some clothes on before you sit down naked?" Jules asked and followed him into the living room while she gestured for the two men to come in as well. "Please?"

"I have jeans on, Jules, and it is two in the morning. I was asleep because I have to be up in thirty minutes so that I can go to work."

"Unfortunately... I don't think you will be able to go to work today, Cowboy," Jules said, hesitating ever so slightly.

Victor gave her a weird look, not liking the idea of not working on the family farm that her dad controlled. "And why will I not be able to go to work?" he asked.

"Well, you are needed somewhere else," she said and started to wring her fingers together while she grew nervous because she had no idea how he would react. "And Dad knows about this anyway, so he doesn't expect you to be at the barn today..."

Victor scowled and narrowed his eyes while he studied her. "And how does Mr. Douglas know about this?" he asked.

Jules's cheeks turned red, and a look of nervousness appeared on his face. "Put a shirt on, and I will let you know. Ok? We'll talk later about what I can tell you and then you will know more later when you get settled in somewhere else."

Victor narrowed his eyes further, and his scowl grew deeper. However, he knew better than to push her when she is like this. "Grab something to drink if you want it, Jules," he said coldly. "And give your guests something to drink as well. I'll be back in a bit so that we can talk."

"Jusf put on a shirt and maybe some pants, please," Jules said with a shake of her head.
"Don't do your normal morning routine because that is going to take longer than what you need to do."

Victor scoffed a laugh and started to make his way to his room while he rolled his eyes. "If I am leaving, then let me get ready to leave, Jules," he said, calling over his shoulder while he did that. "I'll be quick, quicker than I would normally take in getting ready."

Jules was silent for a bit while she looked at the men she brought with her. "Well, you can go ahead and pack an overnight bag if you want to. However, you don't need to bring anything with you because everything will be provided for you as soon as you get there," she said. "Dad and I will watch your house and property while you are away."

"So you ain't coming with me?" Victor asked and paused with his hand on his bedroom door. He turned to look in that direction with a small frown on his face, and a look of worry flashed through his eyes because he wasn't sure if he would like it or not.

"Not this time, Cowboy," Jules said, and he had a feeling that she smiled and shook her head while he heard the sadness in her voice. "Not this time."

Oh Gods...
