Chapter Four

The harsh light of day beamed into Chloe's room along with a loud monotonous knocking on the door. Chloe's bedroom mirror stood under a black sheet, masking any traces of a reflection. Chloe sat up in her bed, groaned and rubbed her head. The knocking continued, and Chloe looked around her room eyeing the hidden mirror.

She climbed out of her bed, still dressed in last night's clothes and made her way to the door, answering it in a huff.

"Sebastian? What are you... what are you doing here?"

Without waiting for an invitation, Sebastian stormed into her apartment with his computer tucked under his arm. He opened it up on the table, just as Chloe closed the door.

"Sure, come right in. Make yourself at home," Chloe joked.

"Sorry, Chlo... but I've been up all night, contemplating theories about that mirror and about what might be going on with you and then there is this..." Sebastian pulled out a sample bag from his pocket. Inside was the blood smeared shard from last night's bathroom incident.

"Why would you have that?"

"I took it last night... and I had a buddy go over the blood sample..."

Chloe snatched the bag from his hands. "You had my blood studied without my permission? What the hell, Sebastian?"

"Your blood? That's the thing, it isn't your blood!"

"How do you know?"

Sebastian pulled up a report that had been sent to him by the doctor and sat down at the table. "You're O positive right, Chlo? That blood is some weird combination that isn't human or even animal."

Chloe examined the shard in the plastic bag and sat beside him. "How is that even possible?"

"I don't know, but something was in your bathroom last night... and we need to find out what it was." Sebastian looked up at Chloe. "Do you know what this means? It means that your hallucinations... It means they're all real... and it means that your grandma's death might not have been a suicide."

Chloe shook her head and got to her feet, considering the mirror in her bedroom from the night before. She already knew the truth. Leaving Sebastian at the table, Chloe made her way to her bedroom.

"Hey, where are you going?" Sebastian asked her, getting to his feet and following after her.

"I need to show you something. Come with me." Chloe invited him to her room and over to the full-length mirror which still had the sheet draped over it. Chloe positioned herself behind the mirror.

"I take it you woke up with ridiculous bed hair this morning?" Sebastian asked, gesturing to the sheet.

"No, I woke up to an annoying guest... Check this out." Chloe brought her hand to the sheet and then looked back at him. "You need to promise not to freak out, okay?"

Sebastian shrugged. "I promise."

Chloe pinched at the fabric and pulled it away instantly leaving Sebastian stumped as to what the big deal was. "I see my reflection, that's it. I think I need to shave."

"Really? Nothing out of the ordinary?" Chloe was hesitant, regardless, she stepped beside him, in front of the mirror. The moment she did, Sebastian saw something astonishing. "Hey, Chlo... Is that supposed to happen?"

Despite the fact that Chloe was standing right beside Sebastian in her bedroom, her reflection was nowhere to be seen. "Oh my god. Where'd she go?" Chloe stepped toward the mirror and brought her fingertips to the glass. It was cold and impenetrable, and with her reflection nowhere to be seen, it was like looking through a window.

Chloe turned back to Sebastian who was trying hard to maintain his composure. "I told you not to freak out."

"Are you a vampire?"

"Seb, this is serious."

Sebastian's tone raised a little. "Yeah, I know it's serious! You don't have a reflection! Who doesn't have a reflection? I have a reflection, did that mirror steal it?"

Chloe brought her hands to his shoulders in order to calm him down. "Please, you need to keep calm. Please!"

He took three deep breaths and turned his back from the mirror. "Okay, I think I'm calm. Let's ignore the whole absent reflection thing and get back to the subject of that blood work. Thoughts?"

"I'm not sure... maybe..."

"Dude! Your reflection is gone! How is that humanly possible! We need to get to the bottom of whatever the hell is going on here! Are you a ghost? Vampire? Have you met Peter Pan without my knowledge? Wait, you still have a shadow!"

Sebastian's sudden outburst forced Chloe to step toward the mirror and cover it up with the sheet again. "Is that better?"

"Is that the only mirror in your apartment?"

"After the smashed one in the bathroom? Yeah, it is."

"Good... then it's a little better." Sebastian sat down on the bed and rubbed his temples with his fingertips. He took two more breaths and then stared up at Chloe. "Okay, I think I'm ready to know what's going on... tell me everything."

Chloe started by telling Sebastian her memories of the night her grandmother had died, while relaying the words she couldn't help but pace back and forth. Chloe went on to explain about seeing her own reflection clawing to break out of the mirror last night, along with every single incident over the years that seemed remotely relatable.

When she had finished telling him everything, she stared down at him, waiting for him to comment as if her very being depended on his input. Sebastian's eyes closed momentarily.

"I know, I'm crazy... aren't I?" Chloe remarked, forcing him to open his eyes again.

Sebastian got to his feet quickly and brought his own hand to her shoulder. "No, no. You're not crazy... this entire scenario is crazy. It's highly illogical, but somehow... very possible... I mean, I just saw the proof in... you know... your invisible reflection."

"Invisible reflection?"

"It's my temporary explanation and I'm sticking to it... Just until we can find a proper answer... and on that note..." Sebastian turned on his heels and left the room quickly, with Chloe close behind. He pulled up the bloodwork report on his computer and sat back down at the table. "Somehow this bloodwork has to do with everything that is going on."

Sebastian stared at Chloe with a hint of concern.

"You've clearly formulated a plan, Seb... out with it already."

He pursed his lips and shook his head. "Just maybe... your reflection has left the, and I quote 'mirrorverse' and has made it into our world. She must have injured herself in the process. That would explain the blood."

"But that's impossible. If we're buying into this... then that would mean that my grandmother's stories were actually retellings of the truth... and she used to say... I guess the word 'doppleganger' comes to mind... well, that only one doppleganger can remain in the world at once."

"You also mentioned that one would be good and that one would be pure evil."

Chloe shrugged. "That's what she used to believe. But everybody holds both good and bad intent."

"My point is, Chlo, that we could have another 'you' runnin' around and now we're going to have to find her."
