Chapter Three

It took a short while until Chloe and Seb decided to brush off the notion that someone else had been in the bathroom and decided to go back to watching television. However, the notion that something unexplainable had happened still lingered in the air.

It caused an uncomfortable silence between them until the moment the pizza had arrived. Chloe handed Seb his pizza and he finally spoke up. "I've been going through it in my head and there's just no way that the mirror could have smashed like that. I've gone through every possible scenario and none of them make sense."

"Seriously, Seb? Just drop it, okay?" But Chloe knew that he wouldn't let it rest. She took a bite of her pizza and waited for him to continue.

"This reminds me of that time the carnival was in town and I finally convinced you to go into that hall of mirrors... You never mentioned what happened in their either."

Chloe thought back to the moment that he was referring to. She had been having another one of her hallucinations and her reflection had tried to come out at her at such a force that the mirror had smashed. She and Seb had been escorted out of the carnival by security for damages.

That had been the vision that had forced her to go to therapy in the first place. She had felt like she was losing control of herself. Nonetheless, Chloe remained silent and took another bite of her pizza.

"Chloe... What was that story your grandmother used to tell you?"

"Sebastian, please, just stop it! Those stories are nothing but fairy tales. You're smarter than this... You're just trying to imagine a more exciting reality. The mirror probably smashed because of the humidity."

"So, what about the blood then? That blood was fresh and neither one of us have any cuts."

"Maybe it was a rat or something"

"A rat? You don't have rats here."

He was right. But Chloe couldn't think of any other theories that might explain the blood. The truth was that she didn't want to admit that just maybe her hallucinations could be true... Because that would be impossible.

"I need to use the bathroom," Seb hurried over and closed the door behind him, forcing Chloe to roll his eyes. She could imagine him going over every trace to uncover the truth behind the smashed mirror.

After five minutes he had joined her again and pressed play on the movie, remaining absolutely silent.

"What is it?" Chloe asked.

He shook his head. "Nothing."

"What did you do?"

"I don't know what you're talking about. Let's just watch the movie. Okay?"

Chloe's temptation to argue was high but she held back and kept her eyes glued to the television. After an hour, it finished so Seb collected his things ready to leave.

"You're leaving?" She had been certain that they would pull an all-nighter.

"Yeah, I'm exhausted." He hurried out the door without so much as a wave, frustrating her with his peculiar change in behaviour. However, she was also somewhat relieved. It would give her a moment to clean out the bathroom.

She made her way to the bathroom to see that Seb had already cleaned up the shattered glass. He had even wiped away the blood from the sink.

Annoyed, Chloe stared up at what was left of her bathroom mirror.  All that remained was a large grey imprint of the painted wood that lay underneath the glass itself.

With nothing left to do, Chloe decided to go to bed, but her plans were foiled by the fact that her mother was ringing. She answered it as she sat in her bed.

"Hi mom. I spoke to Alex last night."

"Yes, he told me. Look, I'm calling to apologize for our conversation the other day."
Her mother calling to apologize was a big gesture.

"Honey, I need to explain. I used to think that your grandmother was a little unstable but after she died... I began to remember certain events that happened to me as a child. You see my mother went through a phase where she dabbled in the occult..."

Chloe smirked. "Sure, mom! Grandma was a witch!"

"No, that's not what I am trying to say. She learned a few protection spells. But before she died I found a charm that she had been keeping. I thought it was junk, so I threw it out. But now, I really don't think it was. When you mentioned that you were going to therapy about your hallucinations I didn't want any of this to be real..."

Chloe felt her breath catch in her throat as her mother's voice trailed off in her ears. She was sitting bolt upright on her bed. The light from the bathroom was providing her with a clear view of her full-length bedroom mirror. Her expression filled with fear at the sight that she could see.

Chloe's attention was no longer on her mother but on what she was seeing.

"Mom," she whispered in fear. "What are you trying to tell me?" Her eyes did not leave the mirror for a second. She needed to know if what she was seeing was in fact, real.

"Chloe... Your grandmother's stories were real. The women in our family have a gift to travel through the glass of the mirror. But unfortunately, so do our reflections."

"Unfortunately?" Chloe watched the menacing smile on her reflection's face. It was certainly not mirroring her own look of fear.

Chloe's reflection brought her hands to the glass and attempted to push at it.

Chloe dropped her phone on her bed and got to her feet. She stepped toward the mirror and placed her own palms to the glass.

She was expecting to feel the cold surface of the mirror, though instead she felt the cold fleshy palms of the girl on the other side, as if the glass had disappeared entirely.

Chloe's eyes lingered on the girl's face. They were identical in everyway, except while Chloe's entire body was filled with fear the other face was beaming in delight.
