Chapter 38

Lena's POV

The drive was suffocating, but not in the way it used to be. Usually, the silence between Miu and me was a cold, reinforced concrete wall; impenetrable and designed to keep people out.

Tonight, the silence was different. It was heavy, like the air right before a monsoon breaks, thick with the static of things we were both too afraid to shatter just yet.

I kept my left hand on the steering wheel, but my right was anchored firmly on the center console, palm up. Miu's hand was in mine, her fingers interlaced with such a desperate tightness it felt like she was trying to fuse our skin together. I didn't mind. I needed the friction.

I needed the proof that she wasn't a hallucination born of my own guilt in that airport lounge.

I stole a glance at her as we navigated the neon-drenched grid of Bangkok. The city lights flickered across her face, gold, blue, sharp white highlighting the remnants of the tears I had caused. Every time she blinked, my heart did a jagged, painful stutter.

I almost lost this.

"Miu," I started, my voice sounding like gravel.

She didn't look at me, but I felt her grip tighten. "Don't, Lena. Not yet."

"I just—"

"If you start talking about this or that or why you did what you did, I think I'll actually jump out of this car," she whispered, her voice trembling but firm. "Just... drive. Let's just get inside first."

I swallowed the lump in my throat and nodded, focusing back on the road. She was right.

The silence returned, more intense than before. I could feel her eyes on me now, tracing the line of my jaw, probably wondering if I was really staying this time.

We reached the penthouse, the tires screeching slightly as I took the turns of the parking garage with a restless energy I couldn't contain. I killed the engine, and for a moment, the quiet was absolute.

I turned to her, the shadows of the garage masking everything but the glint in her eyes. The tension was so thick I could feel it against my skin, a physical weight pressing us together.

"We're here," I said, my voice barely a breath.

Miu didn't move toward the door. She just looked at me, her expression a mix of exhaustion, "we're here," she repeated.

The elevator ride was a silent countdown. Each floor number that flickered on the digital display felt like a layer of the world being stripped away until it was just the two of us.

When the doors finally slid open to my penthouse, the familiar scent of my home hit me. It was the scent of safety, and for a second, I felt my knees want to buckle.

"Can I... get you something to drink?" I asked, my voice sounding hollow in the vast, open-concept space. I needed a task. I needed to move my hands before I reached out and grabbed her again.

"Water is fine, Lena," she said quietly, her voice sounding small.

I nodded and retreated to the kitchen. My hands were shaking as I pulled a glass from the cupboard and filled it. I stood there for a moment, leaning against the cold marble counter, closing my eyes and just breathing.

When I walked back into the living area, glass in hand, the space was empty but the sliding glass door to the balcony was open, letting in the muffled roar of the Bangkok night and a humid breeze.

I found her there.

Miu was leaning against the railing, her silhouette framed by the sprawling, glittering tapestry of the city. For the first time all day, she looked peaceful. The tension in her shoulders had melted, replaced by a quiet stillness that made her look like a masterpiece I was afraid to touch.

I set the water on the outdoor table and moved toward her, my footsteps silent on the decking. I didn't say a word. I didn't want to break whatever fragile truce she had found with the stars.

I stepped up behind her and wrapped my arms around her waist, pulling her back against my chest. I buried my face in the curve of her neck, breathing her in. She didn't flinch. She didn't pull away. Instead, she let out a long, shuddering sigh and leaned back into me, her head resting against my shoulder.

"The city looks different tonight," I whispered, my grip tightening just a fraction.

"It looks like it's still standing," she replied softly.

I held her tighter, my heart finally finding a steady rhythm against her back. In my world of lines, angles, and calculated risks, this was the only thing that felt structurally sound.

"We have so much to talk about, Lena," Miu said, her voice soft, carrying the weight of every unspoken word. I could feel the vibration of her voice against my chest, a gentle reminder of everything we still had to rebuild.

I tightened my embrace, tucking my chin deeper into the crook of her shoulder.

"I know," I whispered, closing my eyes and letting the humid night air fill my lungs. "But let me just savor this moment first. This serenity with you... just for a little while longer."

Miu didn't argue. Instead, she reached down and covered my hands with hers, her fingers tracing the veins on the back of my palms. We stood there in the silence, a quiet pact made under the stars.

"Let's go inside," I said, my voice finally finding its steady, professional timbre, though my heart was still racing. "It's getting chilly out here."

We walked toward the bedroom in a silence that was no longer heavy, but expectant. The room was softly lit, casting long, elegant shadows across the charcoal sheets and the minimalist decor. It was a space we had shared before, but tonight, it felt like entering a new building for the very first time.

I stopped by the edge of the bed and turned to her. She looked exhausted—the kind of soul-deep fatigue that comes from hours of fearing the worst. I reached out, my knuckles grazing her cheek one last time.

"Go wash first," I told her gently. "Clean off the airport, the stress... all of it. I'll be here. And then, we'll talk."

Miu nodded, a small, tired smile touching her lips. She grabbed her things and disappeared into the ensuite. I heard the sound of the shower starting, the rhythmic hiss of water hitting tile, and I finally let out the breath I felt like I'd been holding since I saw the news on the airport monitor.

Miu's POV

The steam from the bathroom dissipated as I stepped back into the bedroom, the cool air hitting my damp skin.

I expected to find Lena pacing, or perhaps standing by the window with that restless energy she always carries.

Instead, she was sprawled on the bed, her charcoal coat discarded and her eyes softly closed. The lamp on the bedside table cast a warm, honeyed glow across the sharp lines of her face, softening the edges of the woman who usually looked like she was carved from marble. For the first time today—maybe for the first time in a year, she looked completely at peace.

I moved silently across the room, my heart swelling with a mix of awe and possessiveness. I knelt beside the bed, leaning in close enough to see the rhythmic rise and fall of her chest, the tiny flutter of her eyelashes as she drifted.

This was the face that had haunted my dreams. This was the person who owned every inch of my heart, every secret foundation I had ever built.

I couldn't help myself. I leaned down, my lips barely grazing hers in a quick, feather-light kiss.

It was meant to be a ghost of a touch, but the moment I pulled back, the corners of Lena's mouth twitched. A soft, sleepy smile spread across her lips, her eyes still closed, savoring the contact.

I felt a genuine laugh bubble up in my throat. She wasn't asleep; she was just waiting for me.

Lena's eyes opened slowly, the amber light catching the dark depth of her pupils as they locked onto mine with a gravity that made it impossible to breathe.

"I've missed you," she whispered, her voice cracking slightly under the weight of the confession. She reached up, her hand cupping the side of my neck, her thumb tracing the line of my jaw with a reverence that made my skin hum. "You don't know how much my heart aches for you, Miu. Every mile between us felt like a structural failure. I was dying out there."

The honesty in her voice was a wrecking ball to the last of my defenses. This was the Lena I had fought to see—the one who wasn't afraid to admit that she was incomplete without me.

She wasn't just staying because it was the logical choice; she was staying because she was physically incapable of being anywhere else.

"I felt it too," I whispered, leaning into her palm, my eyes stinging again. "The ache. It was constant."

She pulled me down then, not with force, but with a gentle, magnetic tug that I had no desire to resist.

She reached up, her fingers tangling in my damp hair, and pulled me down into a kiss that finally bridged the gap.

It wasn't like the desperate, salt-streaked kiss at the airport. This was slower, deeper, a deliberate reconstruction of everything we had lost.

It tasted of a year's worth of unspoken "I love yous" and the quiet, dull ache of sleeping in empty beds.

Lena let out a low, ragged sound against my mouth—a mix of a sigh and a sob—and shifted, pulling me closer until I was draped over her, our heartbeats finally syncing up like a rhythmic, steady pulse.

The weight of her beneath me was the only thing that felt real. After a year of static and distance, the sudden, heavy gravity of our bodies pressing together was almost too much to take.

Lena's hands, usually so steady and controlled when she was holding a pen or a blueprint, were trembling as they slid down my back, pulling me into her as if she were trying to merge our very shadows.

I felt her lips leave mine, trailing down to my jaw, her breath hitching.

"A year, Miu," she rasped against my skin, her voice thick with a hunger that was a decade deep. "A year of looking at your face on a screen and wishing I could feel this."

She didn't wait for a reply. Her hands found the hem of my shirt, and in one fluid, desperate motion, it was gone. The cool air of the penthouse hit my skin for only a second before Lena's warmth replaced it.

She flipped us with a sudden, controlled strength, pinning me back against the charcoal sheets. The power dynamic shifted in a heartbeat, she was back in her element, conducting the rhythm of the room.

Her mouth found my neck, her teeth grazing the sensitive skin there just hard enough to make a sharp, needy sound escape my throat. "Lena—"

"Shhh, just let me," she whispered, her eyes dark and swirling with a possessiveness that made my blood turn to liquid fire.

She moved lower, her kisses becoming more deliberate, more demanding. Every touch was a reclamation. When her hand slid beneath the waistband of my lace underwear, her fingers tracing the curve of my hip with a slow, agonizing precision, my breath hitched and stayed there.

The room felt like it was tilting, the only fixed point in my world being the weight of Lena's body and the heat of her hand against my hip. Every inch of skin she claimed felt like she was planting a flag on territory she had nearly lost, and I was more than ready to surrender.

She paused, her fingers lingering at the edge of the lace, her eyes searching mine with a sudden, sharp clarity that cut through the haze.

The room was spinning, my pulse a frantic, jagged rhythm against my ribs. I was pinned to the charcoal sheets, the weight of her body the only thing keeping me from floating away. But then, Lena's movement stilled.

She pulled back just an inch, her fingers lingering at the edge of my lace underwear. Her eyes—those big, brown orbs were wide and searching, filled with a raw, stripping honesty that made me feel exposed long before my clothes were gone.

"Miu," she whispered, her voice a low, cautious vibration. "We can take it slow. I don't want us rushing things... not when we just reconciled. I don't want to break this."

A sharp, incredulous laugh broke from my throat, my fingers digging into her shoulders until my nails left marks.

"Oh, fuck you, Lena," I breathed, my eyes snapping open to lock onto hers with a fierce, burning intensity. "You're really asking me that right now? When I'm lying here, when I've waited a year, when I already need you inside of me?"

Her jaw tightened, a low, predatory growl vibrating in the back of her throat as she realized I wasn't looking for a slow rebuild. I was looking for a total takeover.

"Fine," she rasped, her voice dropping into a dark, dangerous register that made my blood turn to liquid fire. "If that's what the Vice President wants."

"You want me?" she murmured against my skin, her breath hot and damp. "Then take all of it."

She moved her path downward, her kisses becoming more deliberate, more demanding. When her hand slid between my thighs, her fingers tracing the curve of my hip with a slow, agonizing precision, my breath hitched and stayed there.

Her breath shuddered out, eyes glistening. Slowly, reverently, she peeled the lace away, her touch feather-light as she parted my thighs. No rush, no demand—just her fingertips gliding along my folds, tracing the wetness she'd inspired, learning me anew like a long-forgotten elevation.

"You're so warm," she breathed, awe threading her voice. "I dreamed of this. In the dark, alone, I'd close my eyes and imagine your softness, the way you'd sigh for me." One finger slipped inside, gentle and deep, curling with exquisite care. I gasped, arching into her, the tenderness unraveling me faster than any force ever could.

"Lena..." Her name was a prayer on my lips as she moved, slow and deliberate, adding a second finger while her thumb whispered circles over my clit. She watched every flutter of my lashes, every hitch of my breath, adjusting her rhythm to mine like we were syncing after a seismic shift.

"I've missed this most," she confessed, leaning down to press open-mouthed kisses along my inner thigh, her free hand interlacing with mine. "Holding you like you're the only thing keeping me upright." Her mouth followed, lips brushing my center in soft, lingering kisses before her tongue delved in warm laps, tender sucks that built like a slow sunrise.

Pleasure bloomed deep, my free hand threading through her hair, not pulling, just holding. "Don't stop... please, I've needed you so much." Tears pricked my eyes, mixing ache and forgiveness as she hummed against me, the vibration drawing out my sighs.

She lifted her gaze to mine, never breaking rhythm. "Let go for me, love. I've got you—always should have." Her fingers stroked deeper, tongue swirling with patient devotion, until the coil inside me unwound in a gentle wave. I came with a soft cry, body trembling in her arms, her name a whisper on my lips as release washed over me like warm rain.

But the yearning pulled me upright. I eased her onto her back, our bodies aligning like pieces of a fractured plan finally whole. Kissing her deeply—tasting myself on her tongue, I trailed my lips down her neck, over the steady thrum of her pulse.

"My turn to hold you," I murmured, hands worshipping the curves she'd hidden from me for so long.

I settled between her legs, kissing her folds with the same reverence she'd shown me. She was velvet and honey, her quiet moans music after a year of silence. My tongue explored slowly, circling her clit with featherlight flicks, fingers sliding inside to caress her walls.

"Miu... oh, my Miu," she gasped, hand cupping my cheek, thumb tracing my jaw. Her hips lifted gently, meeting my mouth as I lavished her with love—long, languid licks, soft sucks that made her shiver.

"I love you," I whispered against her, the words slipping free like they'd been waiting in the ruins of our separation. "Never leave again."

Her eyes locked on mine, shimmering. "Never. I love you too—god, I do." She came undone beneath me, a soft sob escaping as her body quivered, walls fluttering around my fingers, her release a quiet crest that left her boneless and clinging.

We curled together after, skin to skin, breaths mingling in the dim light. Her fingers traced lazy patterns on my back, rebuilding what distance had torn down. "No more ghosts," she promised, kissing my forehead.

"No more," I echoed, finally home.

***

Sunlight filtered through the half-drawn curtains, painting the bedroom in soft golds that danced across Lena's bare shoulder. I woke first, my body heavy with the kind of satiated ache that comes from being thoroughly, tenderly loved.

She was still draped over me, one arm slung possessively across my waist, her face nestled in the crook of my neck. Her breath was even, warm puffs against my skin, and for the first time in a year, it felt like gravity had settled right.

I didn't move, didn't want to shatter the moment. Instead, I let my fingers trace idle patterns along her arm, the subtle strength in her forearm from all those site visits.

God, I'd missed this. The quiet domesticity we'd been robbed of.

Lena stirred, her lashes fluttering open. Those big brown orbs found mine immediately, soft and unguarded in the morning light. A slow smile curved her lips, the kind that crinkled the corners of her eyes.

"Morning, beautiful," she murmured, voice husky with sleep, pressing a lazy kiss to my collarbone.

"Morning," I whispered back, my voice catching as I ran my fingers through her dark, tangled hair.

She didn't pull away; instead, she tightened her hold, tucking her head further into my neck as if trying to merge back into the rhythm we'd found last night.

The Director who commanded boardrooms and stared down contractors was nowhere to be seen. Here, in the quiet of the penthouse, she was just Lena—warm, soft, and entirely mine.

"You're staring," she murmured against my skin, the vibration of her voice sending a familiar thrill through me.

"Can't help it," I admitted, smiling as I traced the curve of her shoulder. "Go wash up. I'm making us breakfast, and then... we talk."

She lifted her head, those big brown eyes sparkling with mischief. "You also said we were going to talk last night. If talking right now means what we did last night, then don't make breakfast. Let's talk now."

I swatted her arm lightly, heat flushing my cheeks even as laughter bubbled up. "You know what I mean."

Lena grinned, unrepentant, catching my hand to kiss my knuckles. "I know. I'm just making you laugh." She leaned in for one more kiss—slow and sweet, lingering just long enough to make my toes curl before rolling out of bed.

Completely unfazed that she was naked, she stretched languidly, her body a deliberate tease in the morning light, hips swaying as she sauntered toward the bathroom. She glanced back over her shoulder, winking. "Don't burn the pancakes staring at my ass."

I stared lovingly anyway, shaking my head with a fond sigh. "Hurry up," I called after her, the sound of the shower starting a moment later.

Slipping from the sheets, I pulled on one of her oversized button-ups, the silk whispering against my skin like a promise and padded to the kitchen. The penthouse felt alive now, sunlight spilling over the marble counters, the city a distant hum below.

I rummaged for ingredients: eggs, flour, berries from the fridge that hadn't gone to waste in our absence. As the pan heated and batter sizzled, the scent of vanilla and butter filled the air, wrapping around me like nostalgia.

The first stack of pancakes was golden and fluffy, piled high with sliced strawberries and a dusting of powdered sugar. I hummed softly as I set the table, plates clinking, coffee brewing with that rich aroma that chased away the last remnants of our year apart. Fresh orange juice in glasses, napkins folded just so.

Domesticity, simple and sweet, like stitching up a seam that had frayed.

The shower shut off, and moments later, Lena emerged from the bathroom, hair damp and tousled, wrapped in a towel that clung to her curves. Her eyes lit up at the sight of the table, then softened on me.

Without a word, she crossed the kitchen in three strides, sliding up behind me as I arranged the silverware.

Her arms wrapped around my waist, chin hooking over my shoulder. "Smells like heaven," she murmured, lips brushing my neck in a trail of wet, open-mouthed kisses.

Warm from the shower, her skin damp against mine, she nipped gently at my earlobe, tongue flicking out to tease. "And you look even better."

A shiver raced down my spine, heat pooling low as her hands splayed possessively over my stomach, tugging me back against her. The shirt rode up, her towel slipping just enough to press her bare breasts to my back. "Lena..." I breathed, fork pausing mid-air, body melting into her despite myself.

She hummed approval, kisses turning hungrier, one hand dipping lower to trace the hem of the shirt. "Breakfast can wait. You can't."

I almost gave in—god, the temptation to spin around, drop the plates, and let her have me right there on the counter.

But the pancakes were perfect, and we had words to exchange. With a reluctant laugh, I twisted in her arms, pressing a hand to her chest to hold her at bay. "Behave. Food first, then talking. Then maybe more of this."

She pouted playfully, but her eyes danced with affection. Releasing me with a dramatic sigh, she stole a strawberry from the bowl, popping it into her mouth.

"Fine, boss. But only because you make the best pancakes." She dropped a final, chaste kiss on my forehead before sauntering to the table, towel miraculously staying put, leaving me flustered and grinning.

We sat across from each other, knees brushing under the table, the morning unfolding like the first page of a new blueprint—ours alone.

The silence that followed was thick, not with the tension of the past year, but with the weight of things finally being brought into the light. The only sound was the faint clink of silverware against porcelain and the distant siren of a Bangkok ambulance far below.

I watched Lena across the table. Even in a towel, with her hair drying in messy waves, she looked like the most formidable structure I'd ever encountered. She was eating slowly, her eyes focused on her plate, though I could tell her mind was miles away.

I set my fork down. The sweetness of the syrup suddenly felt too heavy.

"I'm sorry," I said softly.

Lena froze. A piece of strawberry was halfway to her mouth, but she lowered it back to the plate, her brow furrowing as she looked up.

"Miu?" she started, her voice cautious. "What are you—"

"No, let me finish," I interrupted, my fingers twisting the edge of my napkin. I needed to get the words out before the lump in my throat closed up. "I'm sorry for how I acted. When you came back... and every time I pushed you away when you were just trying to explain."

Lena's expression softened into something pained, but I kept going.

"I knew, deep down, that you leaving for Germany was the right thing for me, for us....even for you. But I was so blindsided by the hurt that I refused to see the blueprint you were actually drawing. I was so caught up in my own abandonment that I forgot to stop and think about the real reason you were doing it. I made you the villain in a story where you were just trying to be the foundation."

I looked at her, my vision blurring slightly. "I punished you for a year for making a choice that was impossible for you to make. And I'm sorry for that, Lena. Truly."

Lena didn't say anything for a long moment. She didn't reach for her coffee or try to crack a joke to lighten the mood. She just sat there, the morning sun highlighting the raw honesty in those big brown orbs.

Slowly, she reached across the table, her hand covering mine, her thumb tracing the knuckles that were white from gripping the napkin.

"Miu," she whispered, her voice cracking. "I didn't leave to be the foundation. I left because I was a coward who thought that if I stayed, I'd eventually ruin the only thing I ever loved more than my work. You didn't punish me. I punished us."

She squeezed my hand tighter, her gaze steady but her voice gaining a quiet resolve. "I didn't mind you pushing me away when I came back. I expected it. And I will always, always find my way back to you. I will always be patient with you—no matter how long it takes."

Tears welled in her eyes then, glistening like dew on glass, threatening to spill as her composure cracked. She blinked hard, but her voice trembled on.

"Just as you were so patient with me when I was with Mak. God, Miu, we went through so much together—the lies, the distance, the way I kept choosing the wrong load-bearing walls. I was selfish, a coward, and an asshole, and I don't think I even deserve your love. But I'm trying. Trying to be a better person, the person worthy of you. Because Miu... you are the sunshine of my life."

The words hung in the air, her tears finally tracing silent paths down her cheeks. She didn't wipe them away, just held my gaze, vulnerable in a way that made my heart ache and soar. I slid my chair back, rounding the table to pull her into my arms. The towel slipped forgotten as she rose to meet me, our bodies fitting together like they were always meant to.

"You're already worthy," I whispered into her hair, holding her close as the breakfast cooled. "You're my happiness, Lena. Always have been."

Lena's laugh was a wet, shaky sound, a release of tension that seemed to vibrate through my own chest. She pulled back just enough to frame my face in her hands, her palms still warm from the coffee cup.

"This time we're doing this right," she promised, her voice regaining that firm, rhythmic quality, but with a new softness that belonged only to us. "No more leaving. No more making decisions for each other while sitting in separate rooms. From now on, every blueprint, every site visit, every life choice... we do it together."

She leaned in, pressing her forehead against mine, her eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made the rest of the penthouse and the rest of the city disappear.

"I love you so much, Miu. I've never felt so strongly about anyone ever before. I spent twent-seven years thinking my heart was just an engine to keep my brain working, but you proved me wrong. You're the exception. It's only you. It's always been you."

She kissed me then, a deep, slow seal on the contract we had just written in the middle of a messy breakfast. It wasn't just a kiss; it was a vow.

"I'm never leaving you again," she whispered against my lips, the words final and immovable.

I pulled back just enough to meet her gaze, my heart so full it felt like it might burst. "Good," I said, voice thick with emotion, "because if you try, I'll just rebuild you right back into my life—brick by loving brick."

Lena burst out laughing, the sound bright and unrestrained, her forehead dropping to my shoulder as she shook with it. "Cheesy girl," she teased, wiping at her eyes. "But I wouldn't have it any other way."

Still chuckling, she straightened, her expression shifting to something lighter, almost conspiratorial. "You know, we should go on a trip. A real vacation, just us. We deserve it after everything."

My eyebrows shot up, surprise mingling with excitement. "A trip? Where?"

Lena's smile turned sheepish, a telltale flush creeping up her neck as she averted her eyes, clearly already three steps ahead with a plan tucked away. "Somewhere perfect. Let me surprise you?"

"Lena," I said, my voice rising an octave as the reality of our 'reconciliation' started to settle in. "How do we tell our parents about this? About us? Oh my god, I'm going to have to tell Ling. She's going to lose her mind, she's going to explode!"

I was pacing now, the oversized silk shirt fluttering around my thighs as I gestured wildly with a half-eaten strawberry. The logistics of a year-long breakup suddenly merging into a secret penthouse reunion were a nightmare of structural proportions.

Lena didn't panic. Instead, she leaned back against the marble counter, crossing her arms over her chest. She just watched me spiral with an amused, steady stare.

"Miu," she said, her voice a calm anchor that stopped me mid-stride.

"And my dad! What am I going to say to him?" I continued, ignoring her. "He probably thinks I've finally moved on, and now I'm back in the lion's den—"

She stepped forward, catching my hands and pulling me into her space until my frantic energy hit the wall of her composure.

"We will tell them when we get back from the trip, okay?" she said, her voice low and soothing. She tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear, her thumb lingering on my cheek. "Let us have this moment first. Just for us. We deserve this after everything we've been through, right?"

I looked into those big brown orbs, the panic slowly draining out of me. She's right.

"Okay," I whispered, finally leaning my forehead against hers. "A trip. Just us.'"

"Exactly," Lena murmured, a triumphant little smirk playing on her lips. "Just Lena and Miu. Now, stop worrying about Ling and go finish your coffee. We have a vacation to pack for."
