Chapter Four

Carrie couldn't sleep. She tried. She really did. But she didn't want to get trapped inside her mind as two strangers were around her and Michael. Carrie shivered and gripped the blanket tighter. Just the thought was a scary concept. She supposed she could be grateful but...it was all too good to be true. Carries eyes looked over Michael again. Her breath caught at the sight of his cuts. Michael I suppose has dislocated his shoulder and managed to get banged up everywhere else. One cut on his throat was almost too deep to his main artery the medics voice rang in her head. Michael could've died. Carrie furrowed her eyebrows. I'm such an idoit. I didn't even look both ways before I turned. This is my fault. Carrie bit her lip and rolled over painfully on the stretcher. The two men were talking quietly on the other side of the hanger when they heard her. The medic placed a hand on the truckers shoulder and began walking over. Carrie stiffened as he got closer to her. His face wore scowl and she flinched as he put his hand on the bar.

"You're awake." He spoke firmly. Carrie looked him over. The blood. Their blood. All over his shirt and pants. Blood hidden in his fingernails. She cringed.

"Isn't that unsanitary?" She asked as her fingers gripped the blanket harder. The medic looked down at his hands then back up at her.

"I've been a medic for a long time so I believe I know what I'm doing." He crossed his arms. "You're changing the subject. Why aren't you asleep?" He asked rasing a brow. She rose on back at him.

"Oh let me think, I'm in a room full of strangers and I have to look out for my little brother. Not good enough evidence for ya? Well a trucker was getting his oily hands all over my brother and that's not okay with me!" She snapped. Her eyes grew fierce and sharp, waiting for him to try her again. The medic seemed to take no blow from any of her words though. Nor her warning to "lay off".

"The trucker is a friend of mine. I needed help so I called him. His name is Orion. Nicest guy you'll meet. My name is Doctor and you'll call me nothing else. There. All your worries solved. Feel better?" He huffed. Carrie glared.

"Why just Doctor?" She asked. "Aren't you a paramedic?" She scoffed. The medic snorted.

"Something like that. Look kid I have a past with my name so I'd prefer if you just call me Doc or Doctor for now." He said. Carrie blinked before sighing with a nod. She laid back down and looked at the ceiling. The medic sighed and turned around then walked back to his friend. Carrie closed her eyes and shifted uncomfortably. Her mind was still racing. She didn't want to go to sleep.

...

Ratchet rubbed his face as he walked to Optimus. "That good enough for you?" He asked with a grumble. Optimus chuckled.

"How come we can't call you Doc?" He teased gently. His eyes sparkling in amusement. Ratchet pointed a finger at him.

"Now don't you start. These kids aren't even going to stay here long so I figured it was best if they didn't know our true names." He glared then shoved his hands in his medical coats pockets. Optimus smiled.

"What is the harm in that?" He asked.

"I don't want kids hunting me down wanting an autograph when I don't des-..." He cut himself off and shook his head. Optimus gave him a small frown and walked toward him but Ratchet stopped him. "When I don't deserve to sign any." He continued. "Galloway is going to be on our tail about this. I wasn't supposed to fix them on my own. I was supposed to take them to the hospital. Primus, Optimus what have I done? I can't think right when I'm in the zone. The only fragging thing I cared about was saving these kids." Ratchet rambled quietly. He groaned and rubbed his face again. Optimus watched him silently before gripping his friends shoulder.

"Look. Ratchet you saved them. You may have not followed orders correctly but I'll do what I can. This isn't your fault. This isn't their fault. This isn't Ironhides. This is no one's fault. For the past few hours we all did everything based on instinct and sometimes that is not a bad thing. You're a medic. Saving people is what you do. Don't let it get to you." Optimus gave a small smile and gave his shoulder a squeeze before letting go. Ratchet sighed and nodded.

"You're right. I...I just..." Ratchet looked away and Optimus smiled.

"I know." Optimus nodded. "Now, I believe Ironhide has been here too long. Are you going to treat him or shall I leave with him?" He asked. Ratchet took a breath as he looked Ironhides busted alt mode over.

"Leave him outside. I'll fix him there. Don't want to wake the kids." He said as he deactivated his holoform. Optimus nodded.

"Of course."
