Chapter 15

Sam P.O.V

I don't know whether or not life just hears your most worst fear and then decides, "Hey, let's make this happen to that person!" I know it sounds ridiculous, there are people who go through much worse than me. But sometimes I just feel like life hates me.

Especially with shit like, having a step mother who just seems to despise me. Or having a father who has his head so far up his own ass that he can't really ever see the light of day. He acts like he's always been there for me, but if truth be told, he really hasn't. 'Course, I don't tell him that because as much as he pisses me off from time to time, he's still my dad and I do still love him. But, boy. Can he drive me batty.

Someone who has always been there for me growing up is my mother. Always. Through thick and thin, when shit has always been tough, she's always been there. Not in just the bad times, but she's been there for me in the good too. I just wish I told her more often how much it all meant to me. How much she meant to me...

You see, it all happened in English. I got a phone call, which obviously pissed my teacher off as we're not allowed to have our phones on in class. However, I still answered it, driving my teacher further up the wall.

But he shut his trap when I told him that it was important and that I had to go. It was about my mum. One of my neighbours saw her, and apparently she was acting really strange. Not like herself.

I noticed that too, coming home the other day, it was so weird.

Apparently, my neighbour decided to call an ambulance to take her to the hospital to see what was up. As she was acting like she didn't know where she was, or who my neighbour was when she was practically right outside our house. Not to mention the neighbour we had was a nice old lady who had been living next door to us for a good considerable amount of years. She's honestly really sweet, and still has been since her husband sadly passed away a few years ago. I don't know how she does it, still going through life, living in that house alone after losing the love of her life. But she did come over to visit a lot when he died, so I'd like to think that maybe we helped her through that crisis just a little.

Anyway, I got to the hospital and was told what room my mom was in. Walking down the halls gave me a flashback to when I went to visit Taylor in the hospital and it honestly sent chills down my spine.

Shit, Taylor! I never told her that I had to go. Well, it's not like I really could have but, still... I hope she's not worrying about me or anything...

I got to my mom's room, hesitantly waiting outside and debating whether I wanted to go in or not. Before I could decide, the door already opened, revealing my neighbour who had called me on the phone earlier.

"Oh, Sam!" She exclaimed, giving me a small smile. "I see you've made it!"

"Yeah, hey Mrs Jane... Is, uh... Is she okay?"

"Well..." That small frown alone, made me want to break down into a state of panic.

She led me back into the room, and I saw my mother sleeping peacefully in the bed. Mrs Jane turned to me and started to explain what the doctors had told her, and it seemed like it was just as I had feared.

My mom was suffering from Alzheimer's. And they didn't know whether or not it was a long term thing, or a short term thing. I had not noticed it until recently. Then again, I spent most of my time at school, where during that time she could have had episodes when she was all alone. If she was, she should have told me...

But if it was a long term thing, it probably meant it was going to be much harder to treat, if not, impossible. I just couldn't believe that this was suddenly crashed down upon me. I mean, I knew it ran in the family, but I never expected it to happen to my mom. Not ever.

Yet here I was, standing near her bed side, watching over her. She started to stir, and I stood in fear, fearing that maybe she wouldn't recognize me. That was what happened with my nan.

Though, when her eye fell upon me, a smile lit up her face. She was happy to see me.

"Sam... Hey." She grinned. I managed a small smile in return, while trying my hardest not to burst into tears.

"Hey... Mom... You okay?"

"I'm fine... It's just... I don't remember what happened. Everything seems all weird and fuzzy lately." She pouted. I giggled, seeing my mom sort of acting like her usual self again. She laughed a little, before a more saddened expression fell upon her face.

"I'm sorry that you have to come here to see me in hospital, Sam. No daughter should ever have to see their own mom or dad like this."

"Hey, it's not your fault. Things just happen sometimes." I said, tears starting to form in the corners of my eyes.

"Yeah but, I should have told you of this, Sam. I mean, as of right now I think I am quite aware as I can be but... It's like my mother, isn't it? You know, when she forgot things and when she couldn't remember basic things like--"

"Just, stop talking, mom." I croaked, my voice breaking as a tear happened to escape from my eye and slide down my face. Mrs Jane frowned.

"I can leave you two alone if you want?"

"You don't have to..." I murmured. She smiled, shaking her head.

"No, it's okay. I should really pop off home now anyway. So enjoy each others company."

"Thank you so much for calling me." I whispered, actually turning to give her a hug. She happily hugged me back, before we parted and she decided to leave. I stared after her, feeling really sad. I was going to be heart broken when she goes. After all, age was creeping up to her.

I turned back to my mother, taking her hand into mine.

"Everything is going to be okay, mom. I'm going to stay here with you for the rest of today and night. I'll come visit you every day, to make sure you're okay."

"Sam, you don't have--"

"But I want to." I protested. "After all... I... You've always been there for me... I... I love you so much, mom..." I whimpered, more tears starting to stream down my face. She started to sob too, before taking her arms and wrapping them around me and we bawled like babies together.

"I love you too, Sam."
