Chapter 20

Sam P.O.V

For the next few weeks, I ended up having to continue visiting my mom in the hospital, sometimes with Taylor and sometimes alone. Not that I really minded - I understood some days she just really wanted time to herself and didn't want to upset my mom by being in a saddened mood. School was being tough right now, so it was reasonable for Taylor to be stressed.

I hated how my mother was still in hospital longer than originally planned, and it worried me to no end. Sometimes I couldn't even tell whether she was getting better or worse, and sometimes neither did she. There hadn't really been any points where my mom had seriously forgotten me, but there were times where I saw her do a double take when I'd enter her room - I could see it in her eyes. But then she'd go and do that thing she always did where she just smiled and greeted me.

I'm hoping she'll be home in the next few days. I really hate being home alone.

Anyway, today with some flowers in hand, I was on my way to visit her in the hospital to see how she was doing. To my shock, on the journey there I saw Mackenzie with a group of her highschool friends, and I was so hoping to God that she wouldn't see me, or that she'd just ignore my existence and act as if I didn't exist.

Sadly though, the world just wasn't on my side as I saw her look my way, and the look on her face told me that I was just in for a treat. Sarcasm of course.

"Oh my gosh, Sam!" Mackenzie called to me as if I was someone who was like one of her total besties. Like we had been girl friends for all eternity. With the roll of my eyes, I tried my best to be civil by plastering a fake smile across my face, biting down on the inside of my cheek to try and stop myself from saying some acid remark her way. After all, I wanted to get through this alive and just go on to see my mom.

"Hey Mackenzie. What are you up to?" I wondered, just trying to start conversation, while also wanting to end it as soon as possible. Mackenzie and her goons seemed to all look at each other and smirked, almost as if they were thinking of some evil master plan together. But I wasn't going to allow them to intimidate me in the slightest.

"Oh, not a whole lot... Just hanging out. Who are those for?" Mackenzie asked, pointing to the flowers within my hand. Her friends once again went to snicker as they whispered to one another before one of them finally decided to speak.

"Let me guess, are they for your freaky girlfriend, Taylor?" A boy in the group spat which got some of them to howl with laughter as if it was the funniest joke in the world. I narrowed my eyes, but still kept that same smile across my lips as I already knew what I was going to say. No one was actually aware that Taylor was my girlfriend now, but it wasn't like I was scared to admit it.

"Actually these are for my sick mom. I'm on my way to visit her at the hospital." I explained which made the smirk slip right off their face, looking to be replaced with a look of guilt. "And while as sweet as that would be, I probably won't be giving any flowers to my girlfriend until I see her again."

"Wait, wait, wait, WHAT?" Mackenzie cried at me with her eyes practically popping out of her face. "Are you telling me that Taylor is actually your girlfriend? Since when did you swing that way?"

"I'm bisexual." I pointed out with a glare. "You got a problem with that?"

"What? No, of course not!" Mackenzie laughed nervously as her friends seemed to give her weird side glances, not totally seeming convinced by what sounded like a lie. "I have many... Many great friends who are part of the... Uh, the... LGBT community." She tried. "I have a lot of friends who also swing that way."

"Well, glad to see there isn't a problem then." I continued with an obvious fake smile. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll be on my way." I finished, before pushing past the group. Luckily none of them called after me again to stop me, but I could still feel their eyes on me as I followed the sidewalk.

Eventually I reached the hospital and entered, going to find my mother's room just like any other time I came here to visit her. Normally, I expected her to be alone just watching TV. But to my surprise she actually had a guest - it was my dad who I hadn't actually seen in awhile. His presence didn't exactly make my mood improve at all, as I still despised  the fact that he acted like everything was sunshine and rainbows when he was married to my bitch of a step mom.

"Sam! It's nice to see you here! Give your dad a hug." He grinned as he pulled me in for a hug before I had even got the chance to protest. Exhaling, I hugged him back until I pulled away and gave him a faint, forced smile.

"What are you doing here?" I asked.

"Hey, just because your mother and I are divorced doesn't mean I can't come by to visit her to see how she is doing."

"You never come by any other time." I muttered. "Why do you care so much now all of a sudden? Just because she's sick you suddenly come along to say hi? Are you serious?" I couldn't help but growl in frustration. "Why aren't you with your wife?"

"Well, I figured seeing as I had a day off work and she didn't, I'd just drop by. After all, I know how it's been awhile since we last spoke. So I just wanted to catch up, see how you were doing."

I was doing fine until you showed up.

"Well, I'm fine. Perfect, actually. You don't need to worry about me." I said before turning my attention to my mother. "Hey mom, I brought you some flowers."

"Thank you, Sam." She beamed as she happily took them from my grasp and she admired them with a small smile. Normally I would have expected her to smile wider than that, but as of lately she just seemed really tired. I felt like perhaps she hadn't been getting as much sleep as she needed, which really worried me to no end. And I wasn't exactly sure whether it was just because of the fact that she was unwell, or because she just didn't like sleeping in a hospital. Though, she seemed to notice the anxious expression on my face and wanted to reassure me, letting me know that she had been told that she should be out of hospital soon enough.

I just really hoped that was the case.
