Chapter 24
Taylor's P.O.V
It was hard to comprehend what Sam had just told me over the phone, as she continued to sob her heart out. In a single day, it was like our worlds had changed forever - well, her world more so than mine. That was her own mother. Her own flesh and blood, and she was falling more and more ill. It made me think back to the day my own mom died, and how it broke my dad to pieces. Back then, I hardly felt a thing, and I felt so inhumane for it. I wanted to feel sad, I wanted to feel heartbroken. But I didn't. It was like from the day I was born, I had been broken into little tiny pieces, feeling nothing but sadness within the cracks in my heart.
Sam was the one who woke up that angel from within me. She was the one who taught me that life was worth living, she made me feel like I could fly up into the air into an amazing fantasy land, when before I had met her I had felt like I was only stuck in the Underworld. That I had no point whatsoever to exist, and that I might as well have left this world without anyone missing me. I had many scars that lined my arms from the past that I wanted to leave behind - it took me a long time to stop, but thanks to Sam I had.
Weirdly enough, it was like our fates were swapped. She was always crying, while I was always comforting her - at the beginning it had been different. True, sometimes we aided each other, we were there for each others pain, acting as if we were a bandage trying to cover up a terrible wound. But these days, a lot of bad things were happening to the girl I loved, the girl who had such a pure, pure heart and didn't deserve any of this. If a God existed, what was his reasoning behind this? Why did he make good people suffer? Because no way in hell could anyone use the excuse that maybe she'd gain something from losing her mom. Losing family only caused pain and emotional scarring, that's all it did for a long time. Especially in such a tragic way.
As time passed, I allowed Sam to ramble. She needed to get her thoughts out, and so over the phone I acted as her shoulder to cry on. She seemed so terrified, she had no idea what she was going to do, saying all these things about where was she going to live? The last thing she wanted was to be sent away to her dad's. Yeah, she loved her dad, but the man also drove her up the wall, not to mention her step mom drove her completely crazy. I wished I could do more, I wished I could suggest that we could do something like in a fairy-tale, like run away together and escape from the truth that was reality. Something like this happening to Sam, it was such a slap in the face.
"I... I don't think I'm going to come into school for the next few days." Sam admitted. Which was fair enough. I didn't at all blame her for that, as much as I really wanted to see her, and hug her, and tell her it was going to be okay. But then the last thing I wanted to give her was false hope. Sam had explained to me how the doctors said there was probably nothing they could do for her mom's condition. Which might have meant her end may have been set in stone. It was horrible.
"I understand, Sam. Really." I told her with a sad smile, even if she couldn't see the expression upon my face, I felt true sympathy for her. Saying those words, I hoped she did hear the sincerity in my voice of how much I knew she needed to have time off. There was no way she could focus on school and deal with what was going on at the same time. "Listen though, if you ever need anyone to talk to, I'm here for you... Like you've always been here for me."
"I know, Taylor. Thank you." She replied, her cries finally beginning to calm along with the sound of her erratic breathing. I had been so terrified that she would have sent herself into a panic attack, but thankfully she seemed to be relaxing. "I really love you, you know that right?" She suddenly said, the desperation in her voice managing to make my heart melt but also shatter into two.
"I know. I love you too, Sam." I answered with honesty, meaning those words with every fibre of my being. Those words had been so weird to say to another girl for the very first time, but now they were just like something I could say everyday. It was something I could say to Sam every single day. As I adored her with all my heart. She was my very reason for existing. She was the very reason for my happiness.
We stayed on the phone for a little longer, continuing to say more sappy comments to one another along the lines of the "I love you"'s, and the "what would I do without you"'s. Until eventually, Sam had to hang up, as she was extremely exhausted and was literally running on a lack of sleep. So I allowed her to get some rest, hoping that she would sleep well tonight. I wasn't anyone religious, as like I previously mentioned, if there was a God, then why did all these bad things happen to good people? But even so, I wanted to pray for Sam's mother, in the desperate hope that perhaps maybe for once something good could come out of whispering your worries to the sky above.
I wanted Sam to be happy. I didn't want her to lose her mom. Had I been less emotionally detached as a child, I knew I would have screamed and cried when I lost my mother. I know I would have begged the world to give her back to me, I know I would have pleaded to have the world take me instead of her. Now, I did miss her. Now that I felt more like myself, I did wish I had a female role model to look up to like my mom. I hated the feeling now of missing her every day, as glad as I was to be able to feel that sadness again.
No way in hell did I want Sam to feel the same thing.
