Metaphors
Imagine you like eating a certain food. It's stored in your room and it's only for you. You know it's unhealthy but you enjoy it. Cravings develop over time and you can't help but keep slipping up.
Imagine running through the forest of darkness and you can get a temporary flashlight, but you have to break your leg first.
Imagine swimming in deep water and something grabs you. The only solution is to fight back, no matter what.
Self harm feels different to everyone and can be hard to understand. Chemically, your brain makes you feel better because endorphins are released when you cut. However it goes away quickly. And the cravings come back stronger.
It's crucial to never start or you may get addicted. Each cut leaves you needing another, just to make the thoughts become more bearable and hide away a bit longer.
For that moment, your bad thoughts drift away and all you focus on it the blood and the sting. Staring at the marks you made, holding on for that time. But then it ends. It's hard not to do more.
Think of it like eating a cake. It's delicious, but bad for you. Yet you do it anyway and you just want more. Quitting cake doesn't sound pleasant to you.
Cutting is just a way of coping with the world. A metaphor for the fragility of life.
