Jazz had spent the last several hours working tirelessly, sending a steady stream of coding to an ancient satellite. It was a long shot, but if it worked, it would be nothing short of a miracle. The hum of the terminal was the only sound accompanying him as his fingers danced over the keys, making sure everything was correct. As the last of the code went through, Jazz hesitated for a moment, uncertain about the magnitude of what he was about to do. It was one simple action, but the consequences of failure could mean disaster.
After a deep, steadying breath, he forced his finger to press down on the final key to upload the code. The process was slow, like watching a clock tick down in a race against time. The satellites, most of them aging relics, had to get into position before the scan could begin. Hours passed before the systems were ready. Finally, the scan was set in motion.
Jazz watched as the scan began, the cursor hovering over the button to initiate the search. The anticipation weighed heavily on him. Why was he hesitating? His hand trembled slightly, but he forced his digit to click, triggering the satellite to scan across America.
Minutes passed as the scan completed. The result appeared on the screen—a mass of data in the form of a map. To the naked eye, it looked perfectly normal. But Jazz knew better. The range of the femme's cloaking device was limited, just three miles, which meant he'd have to zoom in, searching each state with meticulous care.
This wasn't going to be an easy task. The data was vast, and the task of combing through it could take days, maybe even longer. Jazz let out a heavy sigh. He knew what this meant: he'd be glued to his terminal for hours, even days, just to find a small pattern in the vast ocean of data. "Tomorrow," he murmured to himself. "I’ll start tomorrow."
Two weeks passed before Jazz, exhausted but determined, had finally managed to narrow down several possible locations. These areas matched the energy signature of the cloaking device. Most of them were in low-populated areas, a strategic choice for whoever had hidden the femme. The next step was critical: to search each area carefully. He narrowed it down to the fourth location. This one had to be the one—they were sure of it. A small town nearby, surrounded by little more than fields and forests, and a blackout zone directly over an abandoned scrap yard. This was it.
It was now time to move. The Autobots were ready to mobilize, but Jazz was hesitant. This mission would be his first one outside the base in a while. The femme would be more comfortable with him than the others, they thought, which made him the obvious choice for first contact. But this would be no easy task—finding her would require a delicate touch.
The Autobots split into three groups. The first was tasked with making initial contact, the second to cover the back of the property, and the third group on standby in case backup was needed. Human soldiers would set up a wide perimeter to keep civilians at a safe distance.
Optimus, Jazz, Ironhide, and Ratchet made up the first group. As the four Autobots approached the scrap yard along the dirt road, their presence was conspicuous. They drove with purpose, trying not to appear overly intimidating, but there was a nervous tension in the air. They had to be careful—this woman was unpredictable, and they weren’t entirely sure what to expect.
As they entered the blackout zone, their sensors immediately went haywire. A sudden surge of electrical energy crackled through the air, overwhelming their systems before they could adjust. It took a few moments for the Autobots to become accustomed to the strange energy readings.
The scrap yard itself looked deserted, the usual clatter of machinery and rustling of metal completely absent. The place had the eerie, empty quality of a long-forgotten relic, the kind of place where secrets were buried, literally and figuratively. Nothing moved, not a sound to be heard. But then, from the corner of their optics, a figure emerged from a small building—an unfamiliar femme, her figure obscured beneath layers of cloth. The fabric covered her face, hiding all her features except for the glint of blue eyes peering out from under the material.
"Leave. I have no issue with your kind," she called out, her voice hoarse, strained as if years of silence and solitude had taken their toll.
Optimus was the first to transform, his massive form shifting to robot mode with a smooth, practised motion. The others followed suit, stepping carefully out of their vehicle forms. The femme stood her ground, her posture unyielding. She wasn't going to run or hide. She wasn't afraid.
"I apologize for your discomfort with our presence," Optimus said, his voice calm and respectful. He crouched down to seem less intimidating, not wanting to scare the femme. His optics scanned her, and the high energy readings in the air seemed to emanate from her, as though her very presence was charged with an unknown power.
"Your presence isn't what upsets me. Who follows you does," the femme snapped, her eyes flashing with distrust.
"Easy," Jazz interjected, his tone casual but with a subtle edge of concern. "No humans here. We set up our own perimeter to keep any enemies and those after you from getting close."
The femme’s gaze softened slightly as she glanced at Jazz, her tense posture relaxing just a little. "They’ll find a way," she muttered. She didn’t seem to trust anyone, but there was a flicker of recognition in her eyes when she saw Jazz. "It’s good to see you up, Jazz. Has there been any pain along the welding line?" she asked, her voice quieter now, almost compassionate.
Jazz chuckled and rubbed the back of his neck. "It's fine. Thanks for everything," he replied, offering a small smile.
"You're welcome. Now please, leave." The femme's patience seemed to be wearing thin as she turned her attention back to Optimus. It was clear—this was her home, and she was ready to defend it with everything she had.
Optimus didn’t give up. He held his ground, his voice steady as he made one last plea. "Please, hear me out. We want to take you with us and offer you sanctuary among the Autobots before the Decepticons become aware of your abilities. If they learn of you, they will use you to create an army, an army capable of wiping us all out."
The femme's eyes narrowed, and her voice softened with a hint of sorrow. "I know what they’re like. Just like the humans, greedy, always searching for destruction. Over seventy years, and nothing has changed. Same wars, different players," she said, her tone resigned, as if she had already seen it all.
Her gaze drifted toward a pile of debris near her, and from within the rubble, a metallic snake slithered out, its silver coils gleaming in the dim light. The creature, a robotic serpent, moved swiftly and purposefully toward her.
"Leadstrike, what are you doing?" she scolded, her voice sharp yet filled with affection. The snake bot, responding to her tone, curled up around her feet, hissing at the Autobots, a clear warning to stay back.
"Easy, easy," Ratchet muttered, eyeing the mechanical snake warily. "Wait—70 years? You don’t bear the visual condition of a human that age."
The femme smirked. "I’m not human, now am I?" she retorted, her arms crossed over her chest defiantly.
As if on cue, Leadstrike, the mechanical serpent, raised its head, hissing at the Autobots, but the femme reached down to calm it, resting a gloved hand on the creature's head. The snake immediately calmed, its body unwinding as the femme removed her gloves and head scarf. For the first time, her face was fully revealed: thick black hair cascaded around her face, and her eyes glowed with an unnatural blue light. Her features, though human-like, had subtle lines and markings that made her appear almost synthetic—like a hybrid between human and machine.
Before anyone could react, a sudden shot rang out from somewhere behind them, and the femme was thrown back, slamming into a pile of assorted car parts.
Chaos erupted.
The Autobots immediately shifted into defensive positions, their optics scanning the area for the source of the attack. The femme, now on the ground, was trying to recover, but her focus was broken. In the blink of an eye, the scrap yard became a battlefield. The Autobots, the femme, and whatever enemies lurked in the shadows now found themselves on a dangerous, unpredictable path. The stakes had just been raised, and the battle for survival was about to begin.
