When bullets rain down
The air was thick with tension as multiple bots emerged from the piles of scrap, their massive forms casting long shadows over the scene. The Autobots instinctively took a defensive stance, backing up slightly to protect themselves and the fallen femme. The group could feel the electricity in the air crackling as their sensors adjusted to the charged environment. One bot, larger than the rest, quickly moved to cover the femme’s body, positioning himself as a shield. The snake bot, still coiled around the femme's legs, raised its head, hissing at the Autobots.
"Sandtrap, help us!" the snake bot called out to the larger bot, its voice sharp with urgency.
The ground trembled slightly as two hulking bots charged at the Autobots with fierce intent. Their movements were fast, fueled by the desperation of protecting their own. One of the large bots barreled forward, swinging its massive arm and delivering a crushing blow to Ironhide’s face. The force of the punch sent Ironhide stumbling back, his optics briefly flickering as he regained his balance.
"Ratchet, get to the femme!" Optimus ordered, his voice calm yet firm. "She will need medical attention."
The Autobots were forced to take a step back, pushing forward only when they needed to, relying on hand-to-hand combat to defend themselves without causing permanent harm. They weren’t here to destroy, but to protect and resolve the situation peacefully.
Optimus locked his grip on the biggest bot, using his strength to bring it into a chokehold. The bot growled, struggling beneath Optimus’ grip, but he didn’t relent.
"We’re only here to help. We want to protect the human from those who want to harm her. Let us help her!" Optimus said, his voice unwavering.
"You wouldn’t have caused this if you’d just left us alone," the large bot growled from within the chokehold, but with a violent shove, it broke free, throwing Optimus back with a surprising amount of force.
Suddenly, a barrage of bullets rained down from the west, causing the Autobots to separate and scatter. The sky overhead flashed briefly as more gunfire rang out, each bullet a sharp reminder that time was of the essence.
"Move!" Optimus shouted, signaling the group to retreat. They began to make a strategic withdrawal, but the fire from the humans didn't cease. The Autobots’ metallic bodies took cover behind piles of scrap, but the incoming bullets weren't enough to break their resolve.
They ran for the building nearby, their movements swift as they attempted to regroup and avoid the human assault. But the area was soon surrounded, and the Autobots found themselves hemmed in by the other neutrals, their faces grim and unreadable. They weren’t here to fight. They just needed to leave and get the femme to safety before more chaos ensued.
"We don’t want to hurt you. We need to get out of here before more explosions rain down," Optimus called out, his voice firm yet calm, trying to reason with the neutral bots.
"Leave us alone!" one of the large bots shouted in return, his voice low and threatening. The moment the words left his mouth, a flash of bright light erupted from the distance, causing everyone to flinch. When the light faded, the bots and the femme were gone, vanished without a trace.
"Where did they go?" Ratchet questioned, scanning the area frantically with his medical scanners, trying to pick up any heat signatures.
"Ironhide, report!" Optimus barked, his optics still scanning the area.
"Optimus, the attack was made by humans," Ironhide reported, his tone grim, "they’re in our custody."
"Spread out. Find the femme!" Optimus ordered, his voice sharp as ever. The Autobots dispersed, scanning every corner of the area for any trace of the femme. Jazz, his optics narrowing, noticed something odd about a nearby trash heap. The debris appeared too organized, too deliberate. He moved toward it cautiously, his servos clicking as he reached out and pulled hard on a piece of scrap metal. It slid away with an unsettling creak, revealing a large hole, big enough for a bot to crawl through.
"Ironhide, Sideswipe, Jazz, and Ratchet with me. The rest of you, secure the area and ensure no more attacks," Optimus ordered.
Without hesitation, the four Autobots dropped into the hole. The descent was far from graceful. The tunnel they landed in was uneven and narrow, the walls rough and jagged beneath their feet. It sloped downward at a sharp angle, forcing the Autobots to maneuver carefully to avoid slipping. Ratchet and Ironhide quickly activated their floodlights, their beams illuminating the cramped tunnel ahead. The Autobots pressed forward, their heavy steps echoing as they followed the trail left behind by the neutrals.
The air grew colder as they went deeper, and the tunnel began to widen. The walls expanded, allowing them to walk side by side. The further they went, the more they felt the tension rise—the unmistakable feeling of being close to something important. Soon, the tunnel opened up into a vast cavern, stretching for miles in every direction. The sounds of muffled voices echoed through the chamber.
"You’ve got to stop the bleeding," a panicked feminine voice said from within the cavern.
"How do we do that, then?" another voice answered, angry and frustrated.
The Autobots quickened their pace, following the sounds of the voices until they reached a small, makeshift camp. The cavern was illuminated by a series of crude lights that flickered and buzzed. Amidst the dim lighting, a figure lay stretched out on the cold stone floor. It was the femme—she was unconscious, her body marred by the bullet wound. Black liquid, possibly energon, was leaking from her chest. The faint rise and fall of her chest indicated she was still alive, but barely.
"Ironhide, Jazz, stay behind. Ratchet, the femme needs medical attention. You and I will try and convince the young bots to trust us," Optimus said as he gestured for Ratchet to follow.
The voices grew louder as they approached, the sense of urgency escalating. Optimus called out, his voice resonating in the cavern. "Please, we mean you no harm. It’s just me and my medic, Ratchet. The femme needs medical attention. Ratchet can help."
The voices fell silent. Then, suddenly, a flood of light washed over them, temporarily blinding Optimus and Ratchet as their optics adjusted to the brightness. A small, panicked voice broke the silence.
"Can he help her? She won’t wake up," the voice asked, filled with anxiety.
Optimus and Ratchet turned to find the source of the voice—a small mechanical snake bot, the same one that had been with the femme earlier. It slithered forward, looking up at Optimus with a mixture of fear and hope in its glowing yellow eyes.
"What are you doing?" a large bot growled, stepping forward to block Ratchet’s path. His massive form was intimidating, but his optics flickered nervously. "They aren’t one of us. They can’t be trusted."
The other bots stood back, watching the exchange but making no moves to interfere. The tension in the air was thick as Optimus scanned the group of neutrals, who ranged in size, shape, and build. Some of them were smaller, others larger, but all of them were wary, their gaze flicking from Optimus to Ratchet and back again.
"Let them help," a voice called out, a small, softer tone. It was the snake bot again. "Sparks needs help that we can’t give. You know this, Scorchline."
Scorchline, the large bot, glared down at the tiny bot but stepped aside begrudgingly, though his optics remained narrowed in distrust.
"Hurt her, and I will end you," Scorchline warned in a low growl before stepping back. The others backed off as well, allowing Ratchet to approach the femme.
Ratchet quickly scanned her, his expression turning grim. "The bullet needs removing. It’s lodged in her spark chamber. She has the same inner workings as a standard Cybertronian, but her systems are unstable. I need to get her to the medical center. I don’t have the proper tools to operate here," Ratchet said, kneeling beside her and carefully picking her up. He transformed into his ambulance mode, making sure she was safely inside.
"You can’t just take her unless we come too," one of the neutrals said, stepping forward with a defiant stance.
"You are welcome to join us," Optimus responded, his voice calm but resolute.
The group of neutrals exchanged looks, their faces a mix of concern and hesitation. Finally, one of them spoke, their voice soft. "We can’t leave. It’s not safe out there."
"We can’t leave Sparks. She wouldn’t leave us, would she?" another bot murmured, his voice tinged with emotion.
After a tense silence, the neutrals finally agreed. "Fine," they said reluctantly. "We’ll come with you."
The Autobots and their new companions made their way back to the surface, carefully retracing their steps to avoid further conflict. They had one goal: to get the femme to safety and make sure she received the medical care she so desperately needed. But with every step, they knew that danger was still lurking just out of sight.
