Low energon
Optimus POV
A week had passed, and the hatchling, now aptly named Storm Chaser, had grown at an alarming rate. She had quadrupled in size since her hatching, stretching nearly four times her original length. As much as the team had embraced her, her rapid growth was starting to pose a serious challenge. It wasn't just her size; it was her appetite. She was consuming more resources than we could spare, and the team's reserves were dwindling fast.
It was becoming a serious concern. Bulkhead and Bumblebee had been scouring the area for new energon sources, but so far, they'd come up empty. Meanwhile, Storm continued to snap her jaws together a new, more effective method of asking for food. It was an improvement from the high-pitched squawks she used to make, but the problem was we didn't have any energon crystals left to give her.
"There's nothing left, Storm," I said, my voice filled with a soft frustration that I couldn't hide. "You'll have to be patient."
She whined loudly, a sad chirp escaping her as her head hung low in disappointment. Her optics dimmed slightly, and she let out another short chirp, as if trying to communicate that she understood, but couldn't help feeling hungry.
I'd been recording the sounds she made for a while now, trying to decipher what she was trying to say. She was developing her own language, a complex one with varying pitches, tones, and growls, each with its own meaning. It was more intricate than Cybertronian, something we hadn't anticipated when we first discovered her. It would take time to fully understand her, but we were making progress.
Bulkhead's voice broke through my thoughts. "We found nothing. Request a ground bridge."
I nodded, already opening the ground bridge. I sent the coordinates through to Bulkhead and Bumblebee, and they ran through without hesitation. As the bridge closed behind them, the hatchling sniffed the air curiously before darting toward the ground bridge.
"Storm!" I shouted, trying to catch her attention, but she was already charging toward it, too quick to be stopped. She jumped right through the moment the portal opened, vanishing on the other side before it snapped shut behind her.
I let out a curse under my breath, not sure if I was more worried about her or the potential dangers she could be running into. With a reluctant sigh, I followed Bulkhead through the bridge, determined to keep her safe.
**Optimus POV - On the ground**
We arrived with a heavy thud, landing in a dense forest, the air thick with the smell of earth and vegetation. I scanned the surroundings quickly. Storm was nowhere to be seen.
"Where to look first?" Bulkhead asked, his voice full of concern.
I crouched down and studied the ground, noticing a trail of tracks heading southward, deeper into the woods. "Let's roll," I replied, transforming into vehicle mode and speeding off. Bulkhead followed suit, his massive form rumbling behind me.
Storm had covered a significant distance, and the tracks led us further and further away from our position. We eventually reached the edge of a steep cliff. The trail came to an abrupt stop at the precipice, the ground beneath us marked with deep claw marks.
"Do you think she flew?" Bulkhead asked, eyeing the sheer drop.
I scanned the area, noting the marks etched into the stone. "Highly unlikely. Her wings aren't nearly large enough for flight," I responded, my optics narrowing. "But she did leave something behind."
I transformed back into robot mode, inspecting the cliff's face. "These here," I said, pointing to a set of distinct scratch marks, "look like claw marks. Storm must have climbed."
Bulkhead nodded and grunted. "Well, if she's up there, we'd better get moving."
Without wasting another moment, I began to climb, my servos finding purchase in the jagged rock face. Bulkhead followed me, his massive frame surprisingly agile despite his size. Halfway up, I found a cave entrance cleverly hidden in a ledge. It was tight, barely wide enough for me to squeeze through, but it expanded as we moved deeper inside. The walls of the cave were coated in something I couldn't identify at first—strange mineral deposits—and the temperature was noticeably warmer the further we descended.
Suddenly, the ground shook beneath us, sending small rocks tumbling down.
"Boom," a distant explosion rang out, followed by the tremor of the earth.
I paused, exchanging a glance with Bulkhead. "Decepticons?" I suggested, my voice low and cautious.
We sprinted forward, weapons at the ready, prepared for a confrontation. But as we rounded a bend in the tunnel, we stopped short. There, in the middle of the cave, was Storm. She was crouched in front of a wall, small fireballs shooting from her mouth, cracking the rock apart. As the pieces fell away, huge, glittering crystals were revealed beneath the surface.
"Storm?" I called out gently.
She paused, her optics narrowing at us, clearly annoyed that we had interrupted her feast. She relaxed when she saw it was us, chirping softly as she turned back to the newly revealed crystals, eagerly lunging at them, her small form pressing them into smaller chunks. She turned to face us again, holding a large crystal in her mouth before trotting over to me, dropping it at my feet.
"Storm Chaser," I scolded gently, "You shouldn't have run off like that. We could have lost you."
She looked up at me, her tail wagging in response, clearly not understanding the severity of the situation. Instead, she turned back to the crystals and began nibbling on them, her optics gleaming with satisfaction.
Bulkhead let out a chuckle. "Guess she was really hungry." I shook my head, though I couldn't help but feel a strange warmth for the little one. "Maybe she thought she was helping." Just as I was about to add something more, Storm suddenly started coughing. I crouched down, instinctively worried. She sounded as though something was lodged in her ventilator.
"Storm, are you—" I began, but was abruptly cut off as a huge fireball shot from her mouth, blasting more chunks of the wall to reveal more crystals.
"Storm!" I shouted, immediately stepping forward. "Enough! Your blasts could cause a cave-in!"
She stopped, her body slumping, head drooping in shame as she let out a soft croak, clearly upset with herself. I carefully scooped her up, feeling the heat emanating from her body. Her wings were still small, and she tucked them in close, clearly exhausted. Her tiny head rested on my shoulder, and she let out a small yawn. I let out a soft sigh of relief, holding her securely. "We found Storm. Stand by for coordinates," I said through the com-link.
Ratchet's voice came through almost immediately. "Is she okay?"
"Tired but fine," I responded. "She tracked down an energon mine. She seemed to get tired of waiting for a refill."
"Great," Ratchet replied, relief evident in his tone. "We were down to our last cubes. I'll get Bumblebee and Arcee ready to start harvesting." With that, the communication cut out. I sent the coordinates to Ratchet, wanting to get Storm back safely without risking a long trip back down the cliff. The ground bridge opened, and we jumped through, the familiar pull of the portal taking us back to base.
Back at base
Storm was still recharging in my servos as we returned to the base. Ratchet immediately began scanning her, his keen optics scanning over her growing frame. "She's undamaged, though I'd like to run a full diagnostic. I need to understand her systems better for future repairs." I nodded, watching as Ratchet gently placed Storm on the medbay berth. She remained completely still, recharging in peaceful oblivion. Her rapid growth and increasing strength were undeniable. Four times her size in just a week—there was no telling how much bigger she would get in the next few days. Ratchet ran his scans, analyzing her internal systems with a mix of awe and concern. After a moment, he looked up at me, a slight grin on his face. "Amazing."
"What is it?" I asked, my curiosity piqued. He gestured to the screen, where a detailed image of Storm's systems was displayed. "Look here," he pointed to her helm on the scan. "This area here. These are olfactory sensors. They're designed to detect chemicals and airborne molecules." He zoomed in on Bumblebee's scan for comparison. "See the difference? Her olfactory sensors are far more advanced than ours. She might even be able to distinguish unique scents, good for tracking. Her range is still unknown, but this is a huge advantage."
I nodded, taking in the information. "What about the rest of her systems?" Ratchet continued to scan her. "The ventilator is coated with an organ metal that's heat-resistant, thick enough to prevent her systems from overheating while she shoots fire." He paused, looking over another section of the scan. "There's something else here. Something unusual." I leaned forward. "What is that?" Ratchet zoomed in, changing the resolution. A deeper part of the scan became clearer. Both of us stared in awe. "Is that... what I think it is?" I asked, my voice tinged with disbelief.
"A T-Cog," Ratchet confirmed, his voice low, almost reverent. I felt a cold shiver run down my spine. "But... the Predacons were supposed to be mindless beasts. They were wiped out by Primus himself." I couldn't believe what I was seeing. "How is this possible?" Ratchet's expression was unreadable. "This means she's more than just an animal. She has the potential to transform." His voice grew quieter, as if the weight of the discovery was settling in. "We'll need to be prepared. She's not just a pet or a curiosity anymore. She's something... more."
