Chapter sixteen.
It was getting dark and my dad hasn't arrived. How many hours will it take to drive from Nassau to here? Definitely not more than five hours. I sighed and fought the urge to cry. It was almost dark now and the school is empty. I was the only one left here in this gothic school. Across the parking lot is the forest that stretched to our dorm and even farther away. I kept looking into the peach black thing imaging stuffs that made me felt like screaming.
"Dad! Dad! Dad!" I heard Daphne's voice calling from the forest. But what could she be doing here?
"Dad! Dad!" Daphne called again, this time with a very cracky and panicked voice.
"Bob! Bobby!" I heard my mom's voice too. I walked into the forest with fear, my mom and Daphne were running deep into the forest. I joined them as we ran deeper into the dark forest. We heard the howling of a wolf and fear gripped me. I felt goose bumps on me as it howled again, and this time it was a painful howl. Daphne stopped running and came to hug me with tears in her eyes. I felt goose bumps on her skin too. We were scared and there was fear of running any farther cos the howling was from the direction we were running too. I expected my mom to stop running as well but she ran even faster shouting my dad's name.
"Mom! There's a wolf there!" Daphne cried but my mom kept running. We need to rescue dad.
I held Daphne's small soft dimpled hands and we started running. The howling came even louder and stronger causing a shiver through me and I felt the forest shook. Instantly, there was lightening and the roar of a thunder. We ran faster and there my mom knelt in front of a big brown wolf. Fear coursed through us and Daphne began to cry. I spot my dad's shoes and his black vest.
Then again another howl that turned into a shriek went through the forest again and as if on queue, the thunder and lightning came through again. My mom knelt beside the wolf as it fell on its side. I felt my stomach dropped the moment the wolf touched the ground. There was lightening again till we went to stand beside mom.
"Mom, let's go look for dad it's getting too late!" Daphne cried as tears strolled down her cheeks. I was crying too but my mom hugged the huge wolf, her body barely covering half of its body. Why is she doing this when dad's in danger? Why is she being so broken because of the dead wolf? "Bobby," I heard her cried in the wolf's brown fur. Why is she calling it Bobby? I could see the wolf's eye was still half opened as a tear strolled out of its eye into the fur around its eyes. Its gaze rest on me and then Daphne then a soft pur came out from it before turning its head away.
"Hailey? Hailey?" I heard someone calling I looked around me and the wolf wasn't there, my mom wasn't too and Daphne wasn't beside me. I wasn't in the forest but in the school parking lot and I was soaked in the rain.
I turned and my dad's car was waiting. My mom got out of the driver's seat and came towards me.
"Hailey," She cried and threw her arms around me as she sobbed. I hugged her back and wiggled out of her arms scared I might wet her. She ran her hand threw my hair and led me to the car. God, I miss home a lot. I would have screamed happily for seeing my mom after five solid months but the dream or whatever I had now was making me feel sick and weird. I instantly felt the urge to see my dad and Daphne. I sighed and sat in the passenger's seat beside my mom as the rain fell heavily. Everything seems funny. There was no sign of rain or even dark clouds before that hallucination, or whatever it was but now it's raining heavily coupled with the fact that there was lightening and thunder strike in that vision.....nightmare, or whatever it was.
"Hailey?" My mom called a bit louder.
"Yeah?" I answered and face palmed.
"I'm sorry okay? For not picking you up early. I'm really sorry okay?" She pleaded and I nodded. That's a story of another day.
"Where's dad?" I asked and she turned her face away biting her bottom lip. I stiffened when she did that.
"Mom? Where's dad?" I asked again.
She shook her head sadly and looked at me blinking tears away.
"He's in the hospital." She said sadly with her eyes looking so far away.
"He set off early in the morning to come pick you but... But he got into an accident." She said as a tear strolled down her cheek.
"Is there any hope?" I asked, my voice cracking.
"I don't know, Hailey." She answered and started the car.
"Where's Daphne?" I asked her as she drove out of the school.
"She's at home." She answered to my surprise.
"Alone?" I asked alarmed.
"Of course not, she's with Leah." She answered as if that was a good thing.
"Mom, Leah is just twelve. She can't take care of Daphne." I answered.
"I know, calm down okay? I didn't mean to leave her behind but I can't take her along to see Bobby's condition." She defended her eyes on the road.
It took more than five hours for us to reach home and it was very late. I went up to my room as my mom shouted "good night".
I went in and there she was sleeping peacefully with her blonde hair neatly arranged behind her. I smiled happily and went to the laundry basket. It was empty meaning my mom washed everything for me. I removed my wet clothes, wore my pajamas and climbed into the bed beside Daphne. I brushed her forehead with my fingers and kissed her forehead. Her eyes fluttered open and I smiled at her.
She opened her eyes widely and threw her arms around me.
"Hailey, Hailey." She choked us she hugged me I'm sure with all her strength.
"Daphne, your neck, you'll break your neck." I smiled and she giggled before breaking the hug.
"I missed you so bad, Hailey" she said as she stared into my eyes happily. Her green bright eyes were full of excitement as she stared into my blue ones.
"I missed you more, darling" I whispered holding her small, soft and dimpled hands and the scene back at school played back, me holding her soft hands as we ran to rescue our dad.
"Where's dad?" she asked with her small soft voice as if she was reading my thoughts.
"He's coming. You need to sleep now." I said and she lied down. The rain fell more heavier beating against the roof and the window. I went to check if the window was properly locked.
I climbed back into the bed and covered Daphne with the duvet.
"Good night, Hailey" She whispered drowsily as I kissed her forehead and watched her drift into dreamland. I lied on my back facing the ceiling as the sound of the rain thudding noisily against the roof interrupts my heart beat. The wolf from my imagination or hallucination or whatever it is kept howling a distance away. Its face popped up in my head in accomplice by the lightening.
I closed my eyes tightly and said only one prayer, "God, please keep my dad safe" and drifted off to sleep.
