Chapter fifteen

"Hey, Can I sit?" I asked Lara as I stood in front of her bed.
"If you want to." She answered nonchalantly as she took a book from her bag and sat across from me in a chair in front of her bed.
"Look Lara, I'm really sorry okay? I totally forgot about you guys," I said as she looked at me sadly.
"Yeah sure." She answered sarcastically.
"Please forgive me, Lara." I pleaded.
"I hold no grudge against you, Hailey. I don't own you. You do what you like and I'm no one to stop that." She said.
"That's not it, Lara. I know I'm wrong and you need to accept my apology." I said.

There was silence for too long after I talked. She kept looking out through the window as I looked hopefully at her.
"Fine" She smiled and without thinking, I threw my arms around her as we both giggled.

"Hailey!" Oh my God, no! I muttered when I recognized the voice calling me. Brandon is the last person I want to see now. I'm trying to get rid of the feelings I have for him. There's no way I'm going to allow my feelings for him grow when I can't imagine a future with him.
"Hailey!" He called again.
Well, there's no need to run away like I'd thought so I turned to face him with the most forced smile ever. I ignore the abnormal rate of my heart beat and the warmness of my stomach so I can concentrate on breathing and avoid staring.
"How are you?" He smiled, gosh please stop smiling cos it's making me feel dizzy.
"I.... I'm good." I stammered looking behind him.
"You've been avoiding me lately. Look I'm sorry if you got a wrong impression the last time, alright?" He pleaded. Did you have to be sweet too?
"No..... No you didn't give me wrong impressions, I just...... Um.... I... Never mind." I smiled looking around. I swear I look like a clown right now.
"Can we hang out again? Soon?" He asked. As desperate that I am to spend time him again, I'm afraid I must get rid of him before it's too late.
"No, no thanks Brandon," I smiled and turned to leave as my heart ached.
"No..... But.... Um.... Hailey." He called as I doubled my steps and went into the cafeteria.
"You snubbed Brandon?" Amber asked looking like she'll beat me for doing so as she sat down beside me with a bag of chips she won't eat.
I just shrugged and sip my soda. Amber shook her head and let it go.

                  **********
I squealed happily once we were asked to go home. The fact that we would be coming back soon made me want to cry. I brought out my already packed bag and went out of the dorm. Alas, I'm not going to have stupid sleepless nights in this goddamned school for once. I sighed with relief and went out avoiding the urge to look back at my bed.
"I'll miss you so much, Hailey" I heard Amber's soprano voice. Gosh, I'll miss this girl more. Her kindness, sense of humor and love for me regardless of me being her prey made me want to cry.
"I'll miss you too much, Amber," I whispered as a tear trickled down my cheek. I threw my arms around her and she hugged me back so gently.
"Where are you from?" I asked her.
"Alaska," she smiled warmly.
"I'm too far. I'm in Nassau."
"Don't worry, we'll get to see each other during the holidays." She said.
"How's that possible?" I asked as I shifted my weight.
"Just trust me." She smiled smugly and hugged me again.
"Bye!" She said suddenly as she ran towards Rose who was glaring at us from a distance.
"Bye!" I whispered as she blew a kiss to me before leaving. I saw her climb into a white Volvo with Rose. I felt it was theirs since I caught Brandon and another blonde walking to the car. I watched as Brandon suddenly turned and looked at me from that distance. He kept looking at me as I stared back. It felt like we were having eye contact which is much easier to do from a distance. We stood for too long as whoever it was started honking, signalling for him to stop wasting time. I smiled and he suddenly smiled back too. How did he know I smiled? He's too far away to notice that. He finally waved slowly and gently and I waved back. I was expecting him to leave after I'd waved but he was still there until Rose came out and dragged him to the car.

I sighed heavily and went out to the school parking lot where my dad claims he will be waiting with his car. I waited for more than the time he claims he'll arrive.
I caught a glimpse of Lara and Cyndy walking to stand at the other end of the parking lot. I ran to them and I felt they were having an argument.
"Cyndy, you can just leave to your house alone. I'll go to mine when my dad arrives. Bye." She said bitterly. I stopped walking so I could hear what the argument was about. I'd rarely seen Cyndy and Lara together since Katie died.
"You've been bitter towards me since Katie died. We used to go home together when Katie was still here." Cyndy said her voice cracking at the end.
"Whatever Cyndy, just good bye, see you in a month." She snapped and turned her head to come face to face with me.
"Hey, Lara." I smiled and she nodded. Cyndy smiled sadly at me and walked away. It was so sad seeing her so lonely. I swear I caught a glimpse of a tear dropping as she turned to leave.
"Lara, what was that?" I asked her. She's making this tough for them. She shouldn't have pushed Cyndy away because of a lost plus she was not the only one who loss Katie. Cyndy did too. I did as well. But she's making it look like she was the only one who loss her.
"What?" She answered not bothering to return my smile.
"Are you guys okay?" I asked as I half expect my dad to arrive soon.
"We're good" She answered looking away. I shook my head sadly and looked at Cyndy who was walking alone miles away.
"Lara, why are you making this look like you were the only friend Katie left behind?" I demanded and she snorted.
"Hailey, don't tell me you have some nerve to talk about this. You don't know anything about it." She hissed.
"What do you mean by that? Katie was OUR friend. She was not a friend to only you. I don't get why you make it look like you were her only friend." I said.
"Is Katie your friend? No, because you didn't even care to see her for the last time before she was  taken away. You weren't there to see what that bloodsucker you call a friend did to her. You weren't there to see how pale she became due to the blood suck. Yet you stand here blabbing about her as if you cared." She yelled her voice cracking.
"That could be true. I didn't see her for the last time but I tried fighting for her. I confronted them and told them my pain. I might not be so close to Katie like you are but she's someone I'd never dreamt of losing but you make it look like you're the only one that wished she's alive. You're even pushing Cyndy away. What was her crime?" I said and she turned away sucking her cheeks from the inside so she won't cry.
"You should be there for her. You are all going through times of agony, but you pushing Cyndy away is just so cruel. She had no friends apart from you and Katie. You guys were so close, the three of you. Don't you see pushing her away is cruel? You must both come together and be there for your friend so you get over the loss together. Not push her away." I said as I tear strolled down my cheek.
"See who's talking." She snorted and looked away. A black sleek Benz stopped by and she turned to look at me before stepping in. The car drove off as I stood watching till it was out of sight.

I shook my head sadly and turned to where I was standing before. Still my dad isn't here and the school is beginning to be empty.
I sighed and concentrated on the students leaving as I prayed my dad arrives soon.
