Guy

Before I learned how to talk, I knew one undeniable truth:

Evil wants your soul and will lie to you to get it.

Most kids might be traumatized to lose their only parent the way I had. Not me. I knew, even as young as I was, that I'd been freed from the prison of my life. My mind wiped the images of her death by the time I'd crawled through hell to get away. Living in filth, with a monster who delighted in our suffering, I welcomed the journey.

When I stumbled into the shelter–alone, silent, afraid of my own fucking shadow–I refused to speak. Holding my tongue had become my only protection and I wasn't about to give it up after what I'd escaped.

The shelter workers would say "Hey little guy, where's your mama?"

I didn't answer because my mama was gone and there was no way I wanted to tell them why. So I remained silent. They named me Guy, and that's who I've been ever since. Because I buried the truth of who I was down deep. It hasn't seen the light of day since.

Foster care was my next prison. And as awful as it was, nothing compared to what I'd left behind.

Until I turned fourteen and found myself shoved hard into a darker reality.

Where I stared straight into the face of evil once again. This time the evil winked back. It whispered in my ear, telling me every sin I'd ever committed.

As if what I'd done to survive was a crime. As if I was as guilty as my tormentors.

I hid from that evil the only way I knew how: silence. If I didn't stir it, didn't anger it, didn't catch its attention...maybe I could survive.

Until the day my angel appeared like a vision emerging from the fog.

My memories of life with her, brief though it was, are the only light I've ever known. The only thread of good I've ever experienced.

She woke me up.

When she escaped I thought I'd never see her again...until I walked into Reaper's territory, the territory of my enemy.

And discovered my salvation instead.

Darker than I expected but that's my current mindset so that's what we're getting...

This character is still revealing himself to me, evolving daily. I'm not sure who he is yet, but I think he wants it that way. I know this was short but it packs a punch and I'm not sure we could handle more of Guy's inner thoughts yet. I planned for this chapter to be more detailed about his time with Mari when they were teenagers, but I guess that will come later.

As far as music, that too is evolving. This song is the vibe I'm going for so expect heavy, dark and intense. I think Mari's music will be lighter, but it will still have an edge.
