Chapter 10
*Frisk POV*
I wanted to kick G in the ass for calling me that again, a light blush dusting on my cheeks from it. Though, I' sure I can't pull what his brother did and get away with it so easily. So instead I groan to myself.
"Such a pity. I would absolutely looove~ to see you bring some pain to that bonehead. Personally I didn't like that nickname either, not for the likes of you at least."
I peek out the corner of my eye to see Chara, a wide lazy smile on her face, arms folded as she floats beside me, eyes narrowed as she stares bullets at G. She notices my glance and giggles a bit.
"What? Don't like me being here?"
I groan again, brought back to reality it seemed. Papyrus was now in front of me, waving a hand in my face.
"Frisk? Are you alright?" His sockets look down on me with concern. He and G both had scars going up and down their skulls as I'd then realized.
I jump and catch a breath, I'd been holding it apparently. Clutching my dress, I nod and say in an asuring tone "Of course."
I feel G looking at me as well "Ya' sure bout that. Doll? Ya' looked zoned out for a sec there."
I half turn to be met by his towering figure right beside me. I back up and tilt my head back to meet his eyes and nod, harder this time, thinning my lips and furrowing my brows, uncomfortable with how close he was.
"I'm fine. Thanks."
Chara giggles from behind and whispers in my ear
"You seem to be looking red there, Frisk. Now what reason is there for that~?!"
She mocks tauntingly. Growing irritated I wave her off and turn on my hel to view the town before us. Taking in the sight, I sigh in content. Papyrus places his hands on his hips and smiles kindly.
"We shall be off then. Where would you like to go first, small one?"
"Grillbys." G says- cheerily...? Thats new, and I'm not sure how to feel about it...
Papyrus stares as his brother speed walks past him, cloak wavering. He rubs his temples with one hand, closing his eyes tightly.
"Really, Brother?" He sighs and turns to see G still walking, he clenches his fists at his sides. "You wish to go the the bar in broad daylight? Can't you wait for the night hours just this once?"
I heard G call back "Nope. S'pecially not with her around." I wince at those words for no reason. Papyrus frowns, brows furrowed. He exhales deeply, not taking his eyes off of G.
"Do not mind him. He gets rather cold from time to time. You would too after all that has went on. Regardless that was rather rude of him. Please forgive him."
I smile up at him when he turns back to face me. I could see now that Papyrus was a very kind skeleton. Way nicer than G, THAT'S for sure. I can't keep myself from smiling wider when I answer.
"Don't worry about it! He can't get under my skin that easily!"
His sockets widen and his smile falters. I hear Chara smack her hand against her forehead
"Oh my god..."
Papyrus lets out a little groan before patting my head gently and mumbling
"You are just like him. At least you don't have an addiction for making those jokes night and day... " He laughs a little and smiles warmly. "I suppose we should go catch up to him. Just follow me, Frisk."
He reaches for my hand and takes it gently, pulling my forward. I comply and walk alongside him, taking my hand back effortlessly. He smiles at me once more and we keep walking. I feel far more comfortable now, walking with Paps. It isn't so awkward and there isn't any ice between us. A sigh escapes through Chara's lips. Slight annoyance rings in her voice.
"Hasn't changed a bit."
I whisper so only I can hear, and appeariantly Chara. "Who, G or Papyrus?"
"Both."
"What hasn't changed about them?"
"The thing that still makes me want to wring them by their necks with a noose." She states in a nonchalant kind of manner and I jolt, the gruesome scene playing in my mind. I swiftly look behind me to see her grinning evilly. I shudder and return my attention to Papyrus, speeding up to him. Fear drenched my question to her. "W...what makes you say such things..?"
She chuckles, floating in front of Papyrus and I. She kicks back and folds her arms behind her head.
"Nothing important. You sound worried Frisk. Care to explain why?"
I avert my eyes from her and onto the cobblestone streets.
Why am I the only one who pays this girl any notice? And more importantly... Why does she resemble me in such a way that it's like looking in a mirror? That's when it hits me.
"Your the one who greeted me when I first fell... Aren't you?!" My voice raises above a whisper and Papyrus stops walking, I bump into him by mistake. He peers down at me, confused. "Pardon?"
A lump forms in my throat. "I-I was just...."
The demon girl's eyes go black as she giggles."Better watch your step there~ Don't want anyone to think your crazy after all."
I clutch the skirt of my dress and tilt my head down so I can only see my feet. "I-It's nothing..."
"Oh, alright then." He seems to brush off the topic and proceeds onward. I follow without hesitation, staying close behind and trembling as a breath makes it way down my neck. Sending chills down my spine.
"Good girl... And to answer your question; Yes. I am the one who greeted you the other day.
Bring it up to G and I will personally make sure your death is long and excruciating."
Her hand worms its way around my neck in a slicing motion, another hand covering my eyes. Yet I could still see through her stiff fingers. Swallowing hard, I nod in obedience.
The rest of the walk remained quiet. But then again it wasn't a very long one. As soon as Chara finished her threat I could see Grillby's from down the street. I wish I could say that relief swept over me but it didn't. I was still filled with the fear that this girl would eventually hurt someone; me.
Immediately as we walk in a warming sensation overtakes me. My eye shot wide open, allowing whoever might have been looking (no one) to see their ruby glow of bewilderment. So many different monsters were here! All shapes and sizes, all different species. All getting along and drinking till their heart's content. Though it seems as soon as I step forward the room grew quiet, eyes had began darting back and forth until they'd landed on me. I gulp... Some continued to stare as Paps and I made our way over to the end of the establishment, over to the bar while the rest shrugged it off and went back to what they were doing. The room filled with their hoots and hollers once more, setting my nerves at ease. A sigh sounds off and I hear Chara's voice fade away.
"I'll be off for a bit Frisky. Try not to have too much fun here, got it?" Rolling my eyes I take a seat at the bar beside Papyrus, who'd left a seat for me between he and G. Two bottles were already empty in front of him. I gawk at the sight. I whisper to Papyrus in a shocked voice "H-how did he already go through that much whiskey?"
He groaned "It's pretty much his 'thing' you see... G has this teleportation type of magic... I do not know why he used it to get here of all places, since it drains him of magic so easily, but I assume it was so he could have an excuse to drink more."
He leans against the counter, head resting in one hand, the other's fingers tapping the counter.
"I understand he only drinks because he wishes to forget, but even so I want to murder him every time he stumbles home wasted. Well...I suppose that's my brother for you."
When he wishes to forget...
I face towards G, he rolls his iris and looks into the half drunk bottle in his hand before mumbling "Yeah yeah, whatever."
Something about his careless expresion... It puts a damper in the atmosphere... And it makes my heart ache in sorrow for him. What could he be trying so hard to forget that he is willing to lose himself in order to do so? I find myself tap his shoulder unconsciously, taking us both aback. He veens my way and I jump, looking away and asking Paps if he wants to trade seats. He agrees and we swap without question. Something about the look he'd given me...It felt.... Uncomfortable somehow.
I zone out during he and Papyrus's conversation, resting my chin on top of my folded hands, elbows against the bar. I believe they were talking about G's alcoholism. Doesn't surprise me really. G does seem to be the hardcore drinking type. I wonder what he's like when he's had too much....
I remember my father being drunk a time or two; On holidays or for he or Mother's birthday. He would invite he and Mother's friends and have fun downstairs while I was sent to my room. I would always wander down those cold hardwood steps while no adults were looking, when I was assumed to be resting. I would peer around the corner of the hall and into the dinning room and watch them all. Father would sometimes make jokes, and everyone would laugh.Sometimes those jokes were dirty, but I couldn't help but want to laugh too. Though... Those were times I would often be caught. Father or Mother would chase me back to my room angrily, threatening to beat me for what I'd done. Lucky for me, that never happened. Nut still, it scared me out of my wits. More than G or flowey. An intense pulse of deja vu pulses through me... The memories coming back in large winds. I shudder under their feet and find myself shoving them away and bringing myself back into Grillby's, away from that disapproving house those horrible people I had known as family. I don't have family anymore... Do I? To be frank, I even disowned myself after what happened. I left everything I was back on the surface. There, I was Frisk M. Evans, daughter of John and Mariah Evans, Politician for the governmental body and CEO. A quiet, smart teenager who would soon be accepted into one of the highest ranked private colleges in the country, and admired by many promising men and business owners; That was the roll I had taken on up there. Here I'm just an outcast. Some human girl being followed by a demon, who looks like her replica and needlessly leaded around and harassed by a monster man who wants nothing to do with me.
I sigh. I wish to find the answer to my questions soon. I hate not knowing things. Like who my Guardian is or why me of people would need one. Vigilant or not, I don't need anyone to shower and protect me. As I've said before if monsters like Toriel exist, than there are more like her. Papyrus for example. He's very kind. I know there are others. I'm determined to find them. That thought is one of the only things keeping me sane at the moment in this noisy place.
"Excuse me, Miss?"
I gasp, jumping out of my skin and quickly looking to my left to see a monster man standing before, towering in the light of the establishment and shadowing me. He gives a soft eerie smile that I pay little mind to. Gesturing to the stool beside me he speaks in a self welcoming voice.
"Is there anyone sitting here by chance?"
He was a griffin with the brown-gold feathered head of an eagle, lion body and tail, what seemed to be sharpened claws and golden bird eyes, suited in a black coat and medieval themed clothing like everyone else it seemed. He lacked the wings one of the creatures I would have expected, but still caught me by surprise. Those eyes seemed strange to me, but beautiful. Determination getting the better of me, I saw this as an opportunity to meet another kind monster.
I let go of my breath in a relieved state. I shake my head and smile up to him, keeping my eyes closed as always.
"Nope, you can sit here if you'd like!" I scoot my stool over a little so he has room to squeeze in between me and the other monster to my left who was asleep and drooling. The griffin's smile widens, and his eye grow stranger with an unrecognizable look in them. Again, I ignore it, pulling my cloak so it's fully around me now, concealing all but my head and the majority of my neck beneath it. The griffin sits without a drink. He doesn't think I notice, but he keeps eyeing me suspiciously. I scoot a little further.
"There's a very strong magic emitting in here... Kinda makes me feel weak, you know?"
I shrug and reply honestly "I don't feel anything actually, but I have felt warmer since stepping in."
He speaks, raspy voice echoing words that turn icey.
"So. What's a human like you doing down here instead of up there with the rest of your filthy kind?"
I'm a little shocked and slightly offended. I respond quietly, bothered by him. "I ran away from home."
He turns to me, furry elbow on the countertop, resting his hand in front of him. A light leaves his eyes. "Why would a pretty young human like you do that? Why come to a hell hole like this when you have a home up there?"
I snap back now, irritation drenching my statement. "That house was nothing but a prison, there is no way I would ever in my life call it 'a home'."
He looked unsatisfied with his answer, so I foolishly continued, clenching my fists beneath my cloak. "I ran away because I wasn't needed. I was different and nobody wanted me there."
I sounded colder than I meant to, but I was sure it got the point across. He leaned towards me slightly, his sharp beak muttering in a cruel manner. It made me want to shudder, but instead I remained still and kept my ground.
I can protect myself.
"You have a soul."
I don't need anyone.
"I'd kindly appreciate it if you'd stop asking me these meaningless questions."
"So you do? And your a vigilant at that, correct?"
A chill runs up my spine. Something's off....
I'm not a child.
"Get away from me."
A half chuckle emits from him, not a whole hearted one of amusement, it seemed forced and too low to be friendly. A set of sharp claws grabs hold of my shoulder and I shriek, feeling the knife like nals dig through my clothes and into my skin, causing me to bleed.
I can't hear the brothers's conversation anymore, that worries me.
I wince at the pain, placing my hand over the griffin's and scrape at it, attempting to remove it. I feel his beak press against my ear, I grit my teeth, choking back tears and cries of pain.
"And let such a powerful soul escape from my grasp? No way sweet cheeks. Your worth more than my pockets can carry, you see."
I struggle against him, his claws deepening into my shoulder, I whimper through gritted teeth. "Let...go."
"Can't. Sorry there, Girly. Don't take this personally."
I'm suddenly yanked out of my seat, the griffin's laws leaving gashes in my shoulder as I am pulled away and into a strong embrace, my back towards the figure for a minute. A deep sounding voice growls, familiar hands handling me so I don't fall from shock. One of them worms around my torso and holds my side, the other takes me by the cheek and raises my head up. "Doll. Ya' good?" I nearly jolt to see G, yellow iris flaring with a serious, enraged expression. My jaw drops a bit as I stare while G examines my wounds, still holding me close to him. I hear his teeth grit together. "Jus' what do ya' think you're doin?!"
His head shoots up and he shoves me away from him to be met by Papyrus, who takes me into a hug, lightly pushing the back of my head so my face is in his armor. I gasp as pain shoots up into my neck at his touch. An orange aura surrounds the gashes and I look back to see G's hood over his face, he and the griffin monster standing only feet away from each other. Not wanting to see a fight happen, I shout angrily at him "G! I'm fine, don't be stupid!"
Before I can escape Pap's tightening hold I witness G throw a fist into the monster's face.
