Chapter 11

The celebratory dinner ended with laughter and toasts that still echoed in the restaurant long after Lena and Miu had stepped outside. Glasses were cleared, chairs pushed back, the noise fading to a low murmur as staff hustled to finish the night.

Tan was already waiting by the car, leaning against the sleek black vehicle, eyes scanning the street. Miu felt her stomach tighten at the sight of him. He always had that way of grounding her, reminding her of the steady world beyond the chaos of cameras, fans, and expectations.

"Long night?" Tan asked, straightening as she approached.

Miu nodded, slipping her bag strap over her shoulder. "Very long."

"You look tired," he said softly, reaching out to brush a loose strand of hair behind her ear. His fingers lingered, and she allowed it, closing her eyes briefly.

Inside, Lena lingered near the curb, hands tucked into her pockets. Her heart tightened at the sight of Miu with Tan, that familiar quiet ache she had been trying so hard to ignore. She reminded herself this was how it should be. This was what Miu had chosen.

Miu slid into the passenger seat, Tan closing the door gently behind her. As he started the engine, he glanced at her. "Something happened tonight," he said carefully. "I see it in your eyes."

Miu frowned. "What do you mean?"

Tan's gaze was steady. "I don't know. But I do know that whatever's bothering you tonight, it's been bothering you for so long, specifically when you started filming this series."

Miu swallowed, feeling her chest tighten. She had thought she could bury it, tell herself it was just proximity, just closeness, nothing more. But Tan had noticed. He always noticed.

"I..." she started, then paused. She looked down at her hands in her lap. "I was... I got carried away. I confused... feelings. It's nothing. Really."

Tan reached over, taking her hand in his. "You're holding back from me."

Miu shook her head quickly. "No. I just... I had a moment. It made me realize something."

"And what is that?"

She looked at him, breathing steadying as the truth solidified in her mind. "I belong with you, Tan. This, here with you, it's real. What we have is real." She told Tan confidently, but that confidence is disguised with the painful truth, truth that the reassurance she gave Tan was not for him entirely, but for herself

She needed to remind herself that what she have with Tan is real. Not for the public eye. Not for the cameras.  But for her.

The car was quiet for a moment, the hum of the engine filling the space. Tan exhaled slowly, relief and tenderness softening his features. "Good," he said simply. "That is all I needed to hear."

Miu smiled faintly, but inside, the ache of Lena's absence settled like a weight. She felt the tug of what had been between her and Lena, the quiet warmth, the shared silences, the almost-touches. And yet, she had made her choice.

Back at the studio the next day, the energy was different. Fans had been raving about the first episode. Online, clips circulated, reactions pouring in. The production arranged a fan event to celebrate and to promote the upcoming episodes.

Lena arrived early, rehearsing lines for interviews, adjusting her jacket, trying to ignore the tight knot in her chest. Miu would be here too, of course, and Lena knew it would be impossible to pretend that nothing had shifted.

When Miu arrived, cheerful and professional as always, Lena noticed her subtle lightness around Tan, who had accompanied her to the studio. Every laugh, every glance between them made Lena's stomach tighten. She forced herself to focus on work, on cameras, on fans, anything to avoid looking too long at Miu.

But Miu noticed it too. She saw Lena's eyes flick toward her, that brief hesitation, that soft tightening of the lips. For a moment, guilt and confusion stirred inside her, but she pushed it down. She had chosen Tan. Lena was a friend. That was all.

During the fan event, the two of them were asked to perform a short scene together for the cameras, a quiet moment designed to show their chemistry.

As soon as they were on stage, the air shifted.

Lena leaned in close, as required, brushing hair from Miu's face. Miu felt the old pull, the gravity of proximity that made her chest ache. She forced herself to laugh lightly, to respond as if it were part of the act, but her eyes flicked briefly to Tan in the audience, who gave her a subtle nod, his expression patient and knowing.

The scene ended. Fans erupted in cheers, phones held high. Lena and Miu stepped back, breathing slightly heavier than usual.

"Good," the director said, clapping. "That was perfect. Just the right amount of closeness."

Miu forced a small smile. "Perfect," she repeated.

Once the cameras were off, Lena noticed Miu lingering, watching her closely, lips slightly parted as if she wanted to speak. Lena's heart thudded painfully.

"Miu," Lena said softly, catching her wrist lightly. "Don't."

"Don't what?" Miu asked, tilting her head, searching her face.

"Don't do this," Lena whispered. "Don't let this... whatever it is between us... confuse you. Or me."

Miu's eyes widened, hurt flashing. "I'm not confused," she said quickly. "I know where I stand. I—"

"You're lying," Lena interrupted, voice low, almost trembling. "I can feel it. Every look, every breath, every small touch." Miu swallowed, heart racing. "It's just... closeness, Lena. That's all. You and I have always been close."

"But I feel more than that," Lena said, the words spilling out before she could stop herself. "Every time you lean in, every time you smile at me like that, it... it makes me feel—"

Her voice faltered, caught between confession and restraint. Miu's lips parted, eyes softening, heart hammering in response. "Lena..."

Lena stepped back abruptly, hands clenching at her sides. "No. I cannot. Not like this. Not now. I—"

She cut herself off, swallowing the words that threatened to escape. The moment shattered as a staff member called from across the stage, reminding them of their next segment.

They turned back, composed, professional, while inside, everything teetered dangerously.

Miu forced a smile, her chest tight with unspoken feelings. Lena forced her jaw to relax, heart pounding at the weight of what she had almost admitted.

The crowd cheered, unaware of the fracture lines running between them, unaware of the emotions tangled and restrained.

And in the quiet space behind the cameras, Lena realized that she had come closer to confessing than she ever intended.

She had almost crossed the line.

Almost.

And the memory of it would haunt her until she could find a way to navigate the impossible pull between friendship, loyalty, and desire.
