Chapter 10

The shift was subtle at first.

So subtle that Miu wondered if she was imagining it.

Lena still smiled. Still showed up early on set with two coffees in hand. Still listened when Miu talked, nodding in that familiar way that made her feel heard. But something had changed in the space between them. An invisible inch Lena kept stepping back.

When Miu leaned closer, Lena leaned away just enough to make it noticeable.
When Miu lingered after takes, Lena found a reason to be elsewhere.
When Miu reached for her hand without thinking, Lena let the touch happen for a second before gently pulling away.

Not cold.
Not unkind.
Just careful.

And that hurt more than if Lena had been distant outright.

Miu noticed it in the way Lena no longer offered her jacket automatically. In the way she stopped sitting quite so close during breaks. In the way her eyes still softened when they met Miu's but never stayed too long.

It made Miu restless.

By the time filming wrapped that day, Miu's chest felt tight with questions she didn't know how to ask.

"P'Lena," she called, catching up to her in the hallway.

Lena slowed. "Yeah?"

"You're busy tonight?"

Lena hesitated for half a second too long. "There's a meeting later. Why?" Miu shrugged, pretending it was casual. "Just asking." Lena smiled, gentle but distant. "Get some rest. Tomorrow's a long day."

Miu watched her walk away, something sinking in her stomach.

She had done something wrong. Hadn't she?

The release of the first episode came faster than any of them expected.

The studio dropped it quietly at midnight, no grand announcement, just a teaser reminder and a simple post. Within an hour, the numbers started climbing. Views. Shares. Comments multiplying so fast the servers lagged.

By morning, it was impossible to ignore.

It trended everywhere.

Have you seen the engagement
Their chemistry is insane
LENAMIU IS REAL
Who cast them because thank you

Miu stared at her phone in disbelief, scrolling endlessly. Clips were already circulating. Slow motion edits. Soft background music. Captions dissecting every look, every pause, every almost touch. She felt overwhelmed. Excited. Terrified.

When she arrived on set, the energy was electric. Crew members congratulated them openly. The director clapped Lena on the shoulder. The production team buzzed with relief and pride.

"You two did so well," the director said. "Better than we imagined."

Lena smiled professionally. "Thank you."

Miu glanced at her, waiting for something more. A shared look. A quiet moment of celebration.

It did not come.

Lena stayed composed, reserved, gracious but distant.

Miu swallowed.

By afternoon, the studio announced a celebratory dinner. Entire production team invited. A chance to toast the success of the first episode.

The restaurant was warm and loud, filled with laughter and clinking glasses. Long tables. Soft lighting. Phones out, photos taken, stories posted.

Lenamiu trended within hours.

Miu sat across from Lena, surrounded by people, yet felt strangely alone.

Fans' comments flashed across her screen.

They look like they're in love
Did you see the way Lena looks at Miu
This chemistry feels real

Miu looked up, catching Lena's eyes across the table.

For a brief moment, something old surfaced. Recognition. Shared disbelief. Pride.

Then Lena looked away. Miu's chest tightened.

When the toasts ended and the noise settled into comfortable chatter, Miu excused herself, stepping outside for air. The night was cool, the city humming quietly beyond the restaurant.

She barely had time to breathe before footsteps followed her.

Lena is not oblivious, in contrary, she's very aware. Aware at how Miu looks at her with fascination and hurt and confusion, all at the same time. She cursed herself internally. She didn't want this. But it's what she needed. It's for the best. Staying close but not too close to Miu is the only thing she could think of to protect her heart and her friendship with Miu.

But, God, it was so hard. Every time Lena pulls back, she can see the hurt in Miu's eyes and all she wanted to do was reach out and squeeze her hand. So when Miu excused herself, she didn't waste anymore time. She followed her like a deer lost in headlights.

This is enough. Lena's thoughts consumed her, and she has had enough of the restraint she tortured herself. Right now, Miu needed her and that's exactly how she's going to be.

A safe space for Miu.

"Are you okay?" Lena asked softly.

Miu turned, surprised despite herself. "You noticed." Lena frowned slightly. "Of course I did." Miu laughed under her breath. "Funny. Feels like you haven't been noticing much lately." Lena stiffened. "What does that mean?" "It means," Miu said, voice trembling just a little, "you've been avoiding me." "I haven't," Lena replied immediately but voice faltering because, yes, she is deliberately avoiding Miu. But Miu didn't need to know that.

"You have," Miu said, meeting her gaze. "You pull away every time I get close. You barely look at me anymore. Did I do something wrong?"

Lena inhaled slowly. "Miu, this isn't the place."

"When is it the place?" Miu asked, hurt bleeding into her tone. "Because it feels like you decided something without telling me." Lena's jaw tightened. "I'm just being careful."

"Careful of what?" Miu pressed. "Or of me?"

Silence stretched between them. The noise from inside felt distant now.

Lena finally spoke. "Things changed." Miu laughed softly, bitter. "Changed how?"

"You know how," Lena said quietly. Miu shook her head. "No. I don't. I just know that one day you were here with me, and the next you weren't."

Lena stepped closer before she could stop herself. "Miu, you have a boyfriend."

The words landed heavier than intended.

Miu flinched. "So that's it?"

"That's enough," Lena said. "It has to be."

Miu's eyes shone, confusion and hurt swirling together. "I never asked you for anything."

"I know," Lena said, voice strained. "That's what makes it harder."

Miu took a breath, steadying herself. "Do you know how confusing this is for me? Everyone sees something. Fans, interviews, strangers online. And then I look at you, and I feel it too. And then you pull away like I imagined it all."

Lena's heart pounded. "You didn't imagine it."

The admission slipped out before she could stop it.

Miu froze. "Then what am I supposed to think?"

"That I'm trying not to cross a line," Lena said, voice low. "Because once I do, I don't know if I can come back."

Miu stepped closer. Too close. "And what if I don't want you to?"

Lena's breath hitched.

For a moment, the world narrowed to the space between them. The tension thick enough to touch. Miu's eyes searched Lena's face, daring her to deny what sat so clearly between them. Lena closed her eyes briefly, then stepped back.

"That's exactly why I have to," she said.

Miu's voice broke. "You're hurting me."

Lena looked at her, pain etched into her expression. "I know. It hurts me too."

They stood there, neither willing to move, neither able to bridge the distance without destroying something precious.

Inside, applause erupted as someone proposed another toast.

Lena straightened, masking her emotions. "We should go back." Miu nodded, though her eyes were wet. "Yeah."

As they walked inside together, shoulders almost touching, the contrast was cruel.

Publicly, they were everything fans hoped for.
Privately, they were standing on a fault line.

And both of them knew. This was no longer just friendship. And pretending otherwise was becoming unbearable.
