Chapter 9
The morning after always felt different.
Miu woke up to sunlight pressing softly through the curtains, the city already alive outside her window. For a few seconds she stayed still, staring at the ceiling, letting the quiet settle before memory came rushing back.
The shore. Lena's jacket. Bow's laugh. Tan's hand in hers as the car pulled away.
She turned onto her side, phone lighting up her face as notifications stacked one after another. Tags. Mentions. Clips. Screenshots.
A familiar pattern. She scrolled slowly, heart steady but alert.
Fans had dissected the interview frame by frame. They noticed how Lena leaned slightly toward her. How Miu's eyes softened whenever Lena spoke. How Bow's sudden appearance made something shift between them, subtle but unmistakable.
"She looks jealous."
"Did you see Miu's face when Lena laughed with Bow?"
"That pause was loud."
Miu pressed her lips together, phone lowering to her chest.
She was not jealous. She told herself that easily. Bow is Lena's friend. Someone from before. Someone she respected.
And yet.
She sat up, brushing her hair back, exhaling slowly. Tan was still asleep beside her, turned slightly away, breathing steady. She watched him for a moment, familiar comfort settling in her chest.
This was real. This mattered.
Still, her mind drifted.
By the time she arrived at the studio, the energy had shifted. There was a buzz that had not existed weeks ago. Staff whispered excitedly. Assistants checked phones between tasks. Someone replayed a fan edit at low volume, quickly silenced when a manager walked past.
Miu spotted Lena near the craft table, sleeves rolled up, hair slightly damp like she had rushed in.
Their eyes met. Lena smiled first. Not wide. Not performative. Just the same soft smile she always gave Miu, like something private carried between them. Miu returned it before she could stop herself.
"Good morning," Lena said when Miu reached her.
"Morning," Miu replied. "Did you sleep?"
Lena laughed quietly. "Barely. My phone would not stop vibrating."
Miu winced. "Same."
They stood there for a moment, close enough that their shoulders nearly touched. Not touching. Almost.
"So," Lena said carefully. "We are officially... interesting now." Miu laughed under her breath. "That is one way to put it." Lena tilted her head. "Are you okay?" Miu hesitated, then nodded. "I think so. Just adjusting." Lena watched her closely, eyes searching but gentle. "If it gets overwhelming, tell me." "I will," Miu said. Then added softly, "Promise."
That seemed to ease something in Lena. She nodded, letting the moment settle.
Across the room, Bow waved enthusiastically when she noticed them. "You two survived the internet."
"Barely," Miu called back.
Bow walked over, linking arms with Lena easily. "You were trending. Both of you."
Miu smiled, but something twisted faintly in her chest watching how natural it looked. How familiar. Lena noticed immediately.
She gently disengaged, stepping closer to Miu instead. "We were," she said. "But it is not as scary when you have backup."
Miu glanced at her, surprised. "Backup?" Lena smiled. "You."
The word landed quietly but deeply.
Bow raised an eyebrow, amused. "I see I missed something."
"Nothing," Miu said quickly, then laughed at herself. "Everything. I don't know."
Bow laughed too. "Good answer."
Filming that day was light. Scenes that required laughter. Shared glances. Comfortable closeness written into the script.
What surprised them both was how little they had to act. Between takes, Miu leaned closer without thinking. Lena mirrored it naturally. Their hands brushed more often than necessary. A shared look lingered half a second longer than before.
The crew noticed. They always did. "Your chemistry is insane," the director said casually during a break. "Do not overthink it. Just be."
Miu nodded, heart thudding.
Be what?
Later, during lunch, Miu found herself quieter. Lena noticed. "You disappeared," Lena said softly, sitting beside her.
Miu poked at her food. "Just thinking."
"Dangerous hobby," Lena teased gently. Miu smiled faintly, then looked up. "Were you close with Bow?" Lena blinked, surprised. "Yes. We trained together before. Almost worked together."
"Almost," Miu echoed.
"It didn't happen," Lena said simply. "Timing. Projects change." Miu nodded. "She seems... important to you." Lena studied her for a moment, then shook her head. "She is. As a friend. That's all."
Something loosened in Miu's chest before she could stop it.
"Oh," she said, trying to sound casual.
Lena smiled softly. "Is that what you were thinking about?" Miu hesitated, then sighed. "I did not realize I was until you asked."
They shared a quiet laugh.
"You do that too," Miu added. "Do what." "Notice things I do not admit to myself." Lena's smile softened. "Someone has to."
That evening, Tan picked Miu up again.
Lena watched from the doorway this time, hands tucked into her pockets, pretending to check her phone. She did not miss how Miu's steps slowed before getting into the car.
Miu turned back.
"Tomorrow," she said.
"Tomorrow," Lena echoed.
The drive home was quiet.
"You have been distant," Tan said gently. Miu glanced at him. "Have I?"
"A little," he admitted. "Not unhappy. Just somewhere else."
She exhaled slowly. "I am trying to balance things."
"I know," he said, squeezing her hand. "I'm not worried. Just here." She smiled, grateful. "Thank you."
Lena did not sleep easily that night.
She lay on her back, one arm tucked beneath her head, staring at the dark ceiling as if answers might be written there. Every time she closed her eyes, Miu appeared without effort. Not dramatic. Not loud. Just there.
The way she had asked about Bow.
The way she lingered before getting into Tan's car.
The way her smile softened when Lena spoke, like she trusted the sound of her voice more than she should.
Lena exhaled slowly.
This was no longer harmless.
She had spent years learning where lines existed. In friendships. In work. In spaces where emotions could blur if left unchecked. She prided herself on knowing when to step back, when to protect herself before things grew complicated.
And yet.
Somewhere between shared glances and quiet conversations, between jackets offered without thought and silences that felt too full, she had crossed into unfamiliar territory.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
That realization settled heavy in her chest.
She cared for Miu. Deeply. More than she had intended to. More than friendship usually asked for. And that care had begun to lean forward, inching toward something that demanded acknowledgment.
That was the danger.
Miu was not free.
Miu had chosen someone.
And Lena respected that more than she allowed herself to admit.
The last thing she wanted was to become a fracture point in someone else's life. Or worse, to let herself hope for something that could never exist without consequence.
She turned onto her side, pressing her lips together.
Protect your heart, she reminded herself.
Not because it was weak. But because it had learned how deeply it could feel.
She also thought of Miu. Of how open she was without meaning to be. Of how easily she leaned into comfort. Of how unaware she seemed of the quiet effect she had on Lena.
Lena could not be the one who blurred that line. Not if she valued what they already had.
Friendship. Trust. The ease that made being together feel like breathing.
If she crossed that boundary, even unintentionally, she risked losing all of it.
And she was not ready to lose Miu in any way.
So Lena made herself a promise in the dark. Not dramatic. Not spoken aloud.
She would step carefully now.
She would pull back just enough.
She would guard her heart and the space between them with the same care she had always given others.
Even if it meant swallowing feelings she was only just beginning to understand. Especially if it meant keeping Miu safe.
Tomorrow, she would smile the same. Laugh the same. Be present.
But she would watch herself more closely. Because the line was there now. Clearer than ever. And crossing it would change everything.
