Chapter 8
The second official teaser went live while Miu was still half asleep.
She only realized something was wrong when her phone kept vibrating against the mattress, the sound cutting through her dreams insistently. She groaned, rolled over, and grabbed it without opening her eyes.
Notifications stacked one after another. Her heart sped up before she even knew why.
Then she saw Lena's name.
Have you seen it yet?
Miu sat up instantly. She clicked the link before replying.
Thirty seconds. That was all. Thirty seconds of carefully chosen scenes, quiet glances, shared stillness. And then that look. The one she remembered clearly from filming but had never considered important enough to think twice about.
Her breath caught. She replayed it once. Then again.
There was a knock at her door almost immediately after. She didn't have to think who it was.
When she opened it, Lena stood there with her phone in hand, hair still damp, eyes alert in a way that told Miu she had not slept much either.
"You watched it," Lena said. Miu laughed weakly. "You sound accusing." "You only get that quiet when something is bothering you," Lena replied, stepping inside. "So. Thoughts?" Miu sat on the edge of the bed, hugging a pillow. "It looks... real." "It was real," Lena said simply, leaning against the desk. "That's the problem," Miu said, half joking, half not, "they used the shore scene. I'm shocked they would." "They always use the moments people forget they are acting," Lena said. "That's what works."
Miu looked at her. "Does it bother you?" Lena met her gaze. "Does it bother you?" Miu hesitated. "I am just... aware now." Lena smiled faintly. "Being aware does not mean we did something wrong." Miu nodded slowly. She wanted to believe that.
The studio felt different that morning.
Not louder. Just sharper. People moved with purpose. Conversations paused when Lena and Miu passed by, then resumed with quiet smiles. Compliments were offered casually, but there was an undertone now, something assessing.
"You two look good together," someone said offhandedly.
Miu laughed politely. Lena nodded.
During wardrobe, the stylist circled them, tugging at fabric, stepping back to observe.
"Stay close," she said finally. "You naturally lean toward each other anyway."
Miu opened her mouth to protest but Lena had already stepped closer, shoulder brushing hers.
"Like this," Lena asked calmly.
"Yes," the stylist said. "Perfect."
As soon as they were alone again, Miu leaned toward Lena. "You did that too easily." Lena smiled. "We were already standing like that." "That is exactly my point," Miu said, laughing softly. Lena's voice lowered. "Do you want me to step back?" Miu considered it. Then shook her head. "No. Just... maybe be aware." "I am," Lena said. "With you." That reassurance settled something in Miu's chest.
Later that day, both of them have a scheduled interview. The interview was meant to be simple. Two chairs. Neutral background. Light questions. They sat close without thinking about it. Knees nearly touching.
"What surprised you most about working together?" the interviewer asked.
Miu glanced at Lena instinctively. "How easy it felt," she said. "We don't have to force anything. It just... worked." Lena nodded. "Trust helps. We already had that."
"Fans seem to notice," the interviewer added. "They say your chemistry feels natural."
Miu laughed, nervous. "That is a lot of pressure."
Lena leaned in slightly. "Or a compliment."
After the interview, as they stood, Miu caught her foot on a cable. Lena reacted instantly, hand steadying her elbow. Miu looked down at Lena's hand. Lena realized and withdrew slowly.
"You okay?" Lena asked. "Yeah," Miu replied. "Just clumsy."
A camera lowered nearby. No one commented.
But the awareness lingered.
They were just walking away from the interview area when Lena slowed.
"Oh," she said, tone brightening. "Bow."
Miu followed her gaze.
The woman approaching them was beautiful, carried herself with easy confidence, hair tied back loosely, smile already forming as she spotted Lena.
"Lena," Bow said warmly, stepping into her space without hesitation.
They hugged easily. Familiar. Comfortable.
"You are here," Lena said. "I thought you were filming today."
"Wrapped early," Bow replied, hands lingering on Lena's arms. "I saw the teaser. Congratulations. You look good."
Miu stood just behind Lena, suddenly aware of her own stillness. The way Bow leaned in close. The way Lena laughed softly at something she whispered.
Something stirred in Miu's chest. Tight. Unexpected.
"This is Miu," Lena said, turning slightly. "My partner."
The word landed heavier than Miu expected.
Bow smiled at her, gaze sharp but kind. "So you are the Miu."
Miu smiled back. "I guess I am."
"I have heard a lot about you," Bow said, glancing at Lena. "Mostly good things."
"Mostly," Lena echoed, amused.
"So this is the project that stole you away," Bow said lightly. "I remember when it was almost ours."
Lena nodded. "Yeah. Things changed."
"They always do," Bow replied. "But you look happy."
"I am," Lena said without hesitation.
Miu felt something twist inside her.
Bow looked between them thoughtfully. "You two have good timing. Don't waste it."
"We will not," Lena said.
They talked a little longer before Bow excused herself, promising to catch up properly another time.
When she left, the hallway felt quieter.
Miu did not speak for a while.
"You okay?" Lena asked gently. Miu nodded. "She seems nice."
"She is," Lena said. "We go way back."
"You were supposed to work together," Miu said. Lena shrugged. "That happens."
"You looked... comfortable," Miu said, forcing a small smile. Lena glanced at her. "I am comfortable with you too." Miu laughed softly. "I know. I'm just tired."
But as they walked, Miu could not shake the feeling in her chest. Not anger. Not resentment. Just awareness. For the first time, she realized she did not want to see Lena that close with anyone else. And that scared her more than the cameras ever could
That night, they sat side by side, phones face down.
"So," Miu said quietly. "We are really being watched now."
Lena exhaled. "Yes."
"Does it make you want to pull away?"
Lena shook her head. "No. Just be careful." Miu nodded. "Careful does not mean distant." "No," Lena agreed. "It does not."
Their knees touched. Neither moved. Outside, the city buzzed brighter than before. Inside, the space between them stayed warm and familiar.
A notification lit up Miu's phone. She glanced at it, then hesitated before turning it face down again.
"Tan's here," she said softly. "He said he would pick me up."
Lena felt the familiar tightening in her chest but kept her expression neutral. "That's good," she said. "You must be tired."
"I am," Miu replied. She stood slowly, adjusting the strap of her bag. "I will see you tomorrow." Lena stood as well. "Tomorrow."
They lingered for a second longer than necessary, both aware of the quiet pull between them, both choosing not to name it. When they stepped outside, Tan was already waiting by the car. He smiled when he saw Miu, opening the door for her easily.
"Long day?" he asked. Miu nodded, smiling back. "A lot happened." Tan's gaze flicked briefly to Lena. "Good work today," he said kindly. "Thanks," Lena replied.
Miu paused before getting in, turning back to Lena. "Goodnight, P'Lena."
"Goodnight, Miu."
The car pulled away slowly, taillights fading into the distance. Lena stood there for a moment longer than she needed to, hands tucked into her pockets, watching until the road was empty again. She told herself the tightness in her chest was nothing more than exhaustion.
Inside the car, Miu leaned back against the seat, watching the city lights blur past. Tan reached over, squeezing her hand gently.
She squeezed back.
And yet, her thoughts drifted elsewhere. To the way Lena had looked at her earlier. To the warmth that had settled between them before the world stepped in. She didn't understand what she was feeling yet. She only knew it was there.
And now, it was impossible to ignore.
