Chapter 14

The sun rose over Bangkok with a relentless brightness that felt entirely unearned. For Lena, sleep had been a fleeting visitor, replaced by the repetitive loop of the previous day's kiss playing against the back of her eyelids.

She arrived at the studio for the scheduled press junket feeling like her skin was a size too small. The lobby was already teeming with staff, publicists, and international reporters. The series had exploded overnight. It was no longer just a local success; it was a global phenomenon.

Miu arrived twenty minutes late. She was wearing oversized sunglasses that hid her eyes, but she couldn't hide the way her hands shook as she reached for a bottle of water. She was flanked by her personal manager and, several paces behind, Tan. He looked out of place in the high energy environment of the press junket, a quiet figure in a world that was becoming increasingly loud.

The awkwardness between Lena and Miu was a physical presence in the makeup room. They sat in adjacent chairs, the mirrors reflecting two women who were terrified to catch each other's gaze. Every time a stylist brushed past them, the tension spiked. They were walking on shards of glass now, not just eggshells.

"You look beautiful, both of you," the head publicist chirped, oblivious to the war of silence happening in the room. "The international fans are going crazy. We have reporters from three different countries on the Zoom call today. Just keep up that chemistry. The world is watching."

The world was indeed watching. As the interviews began, the questions were no longer just about the plot or the characters. They were about the "real" Lena and Miu. The fans had begun to merge the actresses with their roles, demanding that the love they saw on screen be mirrored in reality.

"There is a lot of talk online about your bond," a reporter from a major entertainment outlet said, her voice beamed in from London. "Fans have noticed that you two were close even before the show. Lena, you personally reached out to Miu for this role. Is there a deeper connection there than just professional respect?"

Lena felt the heat rise in her neck. She glanced at Miu, who was staring fixedly at the camera lens. "Miu has always been a talented junior of mine," Lena said, her voice smooth but distant. "I knew she was the only one who could bring this character to life. Our connection is built on years of trust."

Trust. The word felt like a lie the moment it left her lips.

Lena stood in the center of the wardrobe room, staring at a row of matching outfits for their first international magazine cover shoot. The awkwardness from the day before had not dissipated; it had crystallized. It was a cold, sharp thing that lived in the space between her and Miu. Every time their eyes met in the vanity mirrors, Miu looked away first, her expression a mask of professional neutrality that felt like a slap to Lena's face.

"We need more closeness for the cover," the photographer shouted, his voice echoing in the high ceilinged room. "The fans are obsessed with the way you look at each other. Give me that soulmate energy! Give me the truth!"

Lena felt a bitter laugh bubble up in her throat. The truth was the last thing anyone wanted. If she gave him the truth, she would pull Miu into her arms and demand to know why a kiss that felt like the end of the world was being treated like a mistake. Instead, she stepped into frame and placed a hand on Miu's waist.

Miu went rigid. It was subtle, a slight hitch in her breathing that only Lena could feel, but it was there. Miu was walking on eggshells even during the shoot, her body language screaming a silent plea for distance even as the cameras demanded intimacy.

"Lean in, Miu," the photographer urged. "Close your eyes. Act like Lena is the only person who matters."

Miu obeyed, tilting her head until her temple rested against Lena's shoulder. For a second, the mask slipped. In the safety of the pose, Lena felt Miu's hand grip her jacket, a desperate, momentary anchor. But as soon as the flash went off, Miu pulled away, smoothing her hair and looking toward the exit.

The source of Miu's anxiety was standing just outside the heavy soundproof curtains. Tan was there, tucked away in a corner of the hallway where the fans couldn't see him. He had become a ghost in the production, a silent reminder of the life Miu was trying to protect. Because the world didn't know about him yet, his presence felt like a ticking time bomb.

"The comments on the teaser are insane," a social media manager said, walking past them with a tablet. "They're starting to track your locations, Miu. Someone posted a photo of your car at a private restaurant last night. They saw a man in the driver's seat. They're starting to ask questions about who he is."

Miu's face went pale, a ghostly white that even the heavy stage makeup couldn't hide. She looked at Lena, her eyes wide with a sudden, sharp terror. The glass house was starting to crack. If the fans found out about Tan now, at the height of the LenaMiu craze, the backlash would be a tidal wave.

"It was just my brother," Miu lied, her voice trembling so slightly that only Lena noticed.

The publicist nodded, distracted, but the seed of doubt had been planted. The fans were no longer just watching the show; they were hunting for the reality behind it. They were looking for any sign that the "Safe Zone" was a lie.

During the lunch break, the tension finally reached a breaking point. Lena found Miu in a narrow corridor behind the set, frantically whispering into her phone.

Lena stood at the end of the hallway, her heart sinking. She watched Miu struggle to balance two worlds that were never meant to coexist. It was a stinging, miserable realization: Miu wasn't protecting Tan out of shame, she was protecting her career, and in doing so, she was turning Lena into a co-conspirator in her own heartbreak.

Miu hung up the phone and leaned her head against the cool concrete wall, her eyes closed. When she opened them and saw Lena standing there, she didn't run. She just looked tired.

"How long are you going to keep this up?" Lena asked, her voice low and devoid of its usual warmth. "The fans aren't stupid, Miu. They see the way you look at the door every time someone walks in. They see that you're not here with me, even when you're standing right in front of the camera."

"I have to keep it up," Miu whispered, her voice breaking. "I don't have a choice, Lena. I can't lose everything because I got confused for a second on set."

"A second?" Lena stepped forward, the space between them disappearing. The awkwardness was replaced by a sharp, focused anger. "That kiss wasn't a second of confusion. It was the only real thing that has happened in this building for months. And now you're asking me to help you hide him? To help you lie to the people who love us?"

"I'm asking you to be my friend," Miu pleaded, a tear finally escaping and tracing a path through her foundation. "I'm asking you to help me survive this."

Lena looked at her, at the woman who was her junior, her partner, and her greatest ache. She realized then that she would do it. She would help Miu hide the man who was keeping them apart, not because she wanted to, but because she couldn't bear to see Miu break.

"Fine," Lena said, the word feeling like ash in her mouth. "I'll play the part. I'll be the perfect partner. I'll give them the 'LenaMiu' they want so they don't look at you too closely. But don't you dare tell me that what we have is just a script."

She turned and walked away, leaving Miu alone in the shadows. As Lena stepped back into the bright lights of the studio, she put on her own mask. She smiled for the cameras, she leaned into the interviews, and she fed the fans exactly what they wanted. She became the shield Miu needed, even as the weight of the lie started to crush her from the inside out.

"LenaMiu" hashtag trending worldwide, while in the dark corner of the studio, Miu watches Tan's car drive away, realized that the more popular they become, the more they are actually losing themselves.
