Chapter 15

The packing was nearly finished. Miu's suitcase lay open on her bed like a gaping mouth, swallowing up the colorful summer dresses and designer labels she would need for the Manila leg of the tour.

Both Lena and Miu will have their very first sold out International Fan Meeting

The apartment was quiet, save for the hum of the air conditioner and the muffled sound of traffic from the Bangkok streets below. It should have been a moment of excitement, a milestone in her skyrocketing career, but instead, the room felt thick with a tension that Miu could not name.

Tan sat on the edge of the bed, watching her fold a silk scarf with trembling hands. He had been quiet all evening, his usual cheerful banter replaced by a pensive, watchful stillness. He was a man who noticed the small things like the way Miu's eyes flickered toward her phone whenever it buzzed, the way she had started to pull away from his touch ever so slightly, and most importantly, the way she talked about Lena.

"You are thinking about the rehearsal again," Tan said softly, his voice cutting through the silence like a dull blade.

Miu didn't look up. She kept her focus on the scarf, smoothing out wrinkles that weren't even there. "There's just a lot to remember. The choreography, the fan gifts, the script for the interview. I want it to be perfect."

"It will be perfect," Tan replied, standing up to walk toward her. He placed his hands on her shoulders, and Miu felt a wave of cold guilt wash over her. His touch was meant to be a comfort, but now it felt like an accusation. "You and Lena have a connection that people would kill for. I see it every time I watch you two on screen."

Miu finally looked at him, her heart thudding a frantic rhythm. "It's just acting, Tan. You know that. It's what we were trained to do at Chula. We are partners. We are a team."

Tan's expression softened, but his eyes remained sharp, filled with a sudden and piercing clarity that Miu was not prepared for. "I'm not talking about the acting, Miu. I am talking about the way she looks at you when the cameras are supposed to be off. I'm talking about the way she watches you walk across a room as if she is afraid you might disappear if she blinks."

Miu felt the air leave her lungs. She turned back to her suitcase, her fingers fumbling with the zipper. "Lena is protective of me. She's my senior. She feels responsible for my success because she was the one who suggested me for the role. It's a professional bond, Tan. Nothing more."

"Miu," he said, his voice dropping to a low, steady register. He stepped around the bed to face her, forcing her to meet his gaze. "I have known you for a long time. I know the difference between a friend and someone who is holding their breath just to be near you. Lena doesn't look at you like a junior. She looks at you like you are her entire world. And what scares me is not how she looks at you. What scares me is that you have stopped looking away."

The honesty of his words was a stinging blow. Miu wanted to deny it, to laugh it off and tell him he was being paranoid, but the memory of the kiss on the set was still a raw and pulsing thing in her mind.

She could still feel the phantom pressure of Lena's lips, the way the world had gone silent the moment they touched.

"I'm with you, Tan," Miu whispered, the words feeling like a lie even as she said them. "I am here. I'm going to Manila for the fans, and then I'm coming back to you. That is the reality. Everything else is just a story we are telling for the public."

Tan reached out and took her hand, his thumb tracing the line of her knuckles. "Is it? Because sometimes I feel like I am the one living in a story, Miu. I feel like I am the ghost in your life, waiting for you to finish your real life with her so you can come home to me for a few hours. I see the comments online. I see the way the world wants you to be with her. And sometimes, when I look at you, I think you want it too."

Miu felt a tear escape and trace a hot path down her cheek. The awkwardness was no longer a subtle thing; it was a wall between them. She loved Tan or she loved the idea of him. She loved the safety he provided, the normalcy of their relationship, and the way he represented a version of her life that was uncomplicated and easy. But Lena was the storm. Lena was the fire that made her feel alive and terrified all at once.

"I don't want to lose what we have," Miu cried, her voice breaking. She stepped into his arms, burying her face in his chest, seeking the anchor she had always relied on. "Please don't say these things. I need you to be my safe zone. I can't do this if you don't believe in me."

Tan held her, but he didn't pull her closer. He stayed still, his chin resting on the top of her head. "I want to believe in you, Miu. I really do. But don't ask me to be blind. Go to Manila. Do the show. Be the person they want you to be. But while you are there, I want you to ask yourself a question."

He pulled back, his eyes searching hers with a sad, knowing intensity. "Ask yourself if you are protecting me because you love me, or if you're protecting me because you are afraid of what will happen if you finally admit the truth about her."

Miu had no answer. She stood in the center of her bedroom, surrounded by the expensive remnants of her fame, and watched as Tan walked toward the door. He didn't say goodbye. He just left, the soft click of the lock sounding like a countdown to a disaster she could no longer prevent.

The next morning, when she sat beside Lena on the plane to Manila, the silence between them was fueled by Tan's words. Every time Lena looked at her, Miu felt the weight of his observation. She realized then that the secret was no longer just between her and Lena. It was a third person in the room, a silent witness that was slowly but surely tearing her world apart.

She leaned her head against the window, watching the clouds, and realized that she was no longer sure who she was protecting anymore. The stinging truth was that she was no longer walking on eggshells; she was standing in the middle of a battlefield, and the first casualty was her own peace of mind.

****

The humidity of Manila was a thick and heavy blanket that greeted them the moment they stepped off the plane. Even in the middle of the night, the air felt charged, vibrating with the residual energy of a city that never seemed to truly sleep.

For Lena, the transition from the sterile and pressurized cabin of the airplane to the tropical heat was jarring, a physical manifestation of the chaos that had become her life. She adjusted her sunglasses despite the darkness of the tarmac, a reflex born from weeks of hiding her exhaustion behind expensive plastic frames.

Behind her, Miu walked with a tentative grace, her head bowed as she scrolled through her phone, her thumb moving in a frantic and rhythmic motion that Lena recognized as a sign of deep seated anxiety.

They were ushered into a black van with tinted windows that felt like a mobile confessional. The drive from the airport to the hotel in Makati was a blur of neon signs and crowded jeepneys, but inside the vehicle, the silence was absolute. The management had been clear about the optics for this trip. Because of the growing whispers back home and the mysterious sightings of Tan near the studio, Lena and Miu were required to be inseparable. They were to be the living embodiment of the Safe Zone, a united front that would distract the international press and satisfy the hungriest of fans.

The hotel suite was a sprawling and opulent cage on the top floor of a skyscraper. It featured a shared living area with floor to ceiling windows that overlooked the sprawling lights of Metro Manila, but the luxury did nothing to soften the stinging awkwardness between them. As the staff finished dropping off their luggage and retreated with polite bows, the door clicked shut, leaving Lena and Miu alone in the vast and silent space.

"I didn't think there would be so many people at the airport," Miu whispered, finally breaking the silence. She stood by the window, her reflection ghosting against the glass. "It was like they were waiting for us to say something, to do something."

Lena didn't look up from her suitcase. She began methodically hanging her clothes in the closet, her movements sharp and deliberate. "They are waiting for the show, Miu. That is what we are here for. We are here to give them the version of us they paid to see. The version that doesn't have secrets and doesn't have a boyfriend waiting in a car at the studio gates."

Miu flinched at the coldness in Lena's voice. She turned away from the window, her eyes searching Lena's back for a hint of the warmth that used to be their baseline. "You promised you would help me. You said you would be the shield."

"I am being the shield," Lena said, finally turning to face her. Her expression was a mask of professional exhaustion. "I'm standing right here, aren't I? I flew across the ocean to sit beside you and pretend that my heart isn't breaking every time you check your phone for a text from him. I am doing exactly what you asked. But don't expect me to be happy about it when the cameras are off."

The air in the suite felt thin, the tension stretching between them until it was a physical cord that threatened to snap. Miu stepped closer, her hands reaching out as if to touch Lena's arm, but she stopped herself at the last second, her fingers curling into her palms. "I am grateful, P'Lena. Truly. I don't know what I would do without you."

"Don't," Lena snapped, the word echoing off the marble floors. "Do not thank me for this. It makes it feel like a transaction. It makes it feel like I am just an employee of your lie. If you want me to do this, then just let me do it. But don't try to make it okay with gratitude. It isn't okay."

Lena walked past her into the smaller of the two bedrooms, shutting the door with a finality that left Miu standing alone in the middle of the dark living room.

The day of the fan meeting arrived with a roar. The Mall of Asia Arena was packed to the rafters, a sea of glowing lightsticks and banners bearing their faces. From backstage, the sound of the crowd was like a living thing, a rhythmic chanting of their names that made the floorboards beneath Lena's boots tremble. She stood in the wings, watching Miu get her final makeup touches. Miu looked ethereal in a flowing white dress.

As soon as they stepped onto the stage, the transformation was instantaneous. Lena felt the mask slide into place, her features softening. She reached out and took Miu's hand, her fingers interlacing with a familiarity that sent the crowd into a literal frenzy. The noise was deafening, a wall of sound that forced them to lean in close to hear each other speak.

"Are you ready?" Lena whispered into Miu's ear, her breath grazing Miu's skin. To the fans, it looked like a private and romantic confession. To Miu, it felt like a reminder of the barrier between them.

"I have to be," Miu replied, her eyes bright with a mixture of stage lights and unshed tears.

The event was a masterclass in fan service. They played games that required them to stand close, their shoulders brushing and their eyes locked in practiced gazes. They reenacted scenes from the series, including a quiet moment on a bench where Lena had to pull Miu into a protective embrace. As Lena held her, she could feel the frantic thudding of Miu's heart against her chest. It was the same rhythm she had felt during the kiss on set, a frantic and wild beat that betrayed Miu's external composure.

For a moment, Lena forgot the cameras. She forgot the ten thousand people watching. She simply breathed in the scent of Miu's hair and held on a little tighter than the script required. She felt Miu's hand grip the back of her jacket, a silent and desperate response that made Lena's eyes sting.

"They love you so much," Miu said into the microphone later, gesturing to the crowd during a talk segment. "And I love being here with all of you. You are my safe zone."

The crowd erupted, but Lena felt a sharp and bitter pang in her chest. She watched Miu smile and wave, the perfect idol, the perfect actress. Miu was using the very words they had shared in private to feed the monster of their fame. It was a cycle of beautiful lies, and Lena was the one keeping the wheels turning.

The climax of the night was their duet, a slow and melancholic ballad about a love that could never be spoken aloud. As they stood on a rising platform in the center of the arena, the fans turned off the house lights and activated their phone flashlights, creating a galaxy of white stars that surrounded them.

Lena began the first verse, her voice steady but filled with a raw and aching depth that she didn't have to fake. She looked at Miu, who was standing three feet away, and for the first time since they had arrived in Manila, the eggshells were gone. There was only the music and the truth of what they felt.

If I could reach you in the dark, Lena sang, her gaze fixed on Miu's eyes. If I could tell you who we are.

Miu joined in for the chorus, her voice harmonizing with Lena's in a way that had made them famous. It was a perfect blend, two souls echoing each other in a language that only they understood. As the song reached its bridge, they walked toward each other, meeting in the center of the platform. Lena reached out and touched Miu's face, her thumb tracing the line of her jaw just as she had done during that first, forbidden kiss.

The arena went silent, the fans holding their breath as they waited for a moment that felt too real to be scripted. Lena leaned in, her forehead resting against Miu's. In the quiet space between them, the roar of the crowd faded to a dull hum.

"I can't keep doing this, Miu," Lena whispered, the words lost to everyone but the girl in front of her. "I am losing myself in your lie."

Miu's eyes searched hers, filled with a sudden and piercing clarity. "Then don't do it for the lie. Do it for me."

The song ended on a final, lingering note that seemed to hang in the humid air of the arena. They stayed in that position for a long time, two stars caught in each other's orbit, while the world watched and cheered for a love story that was simultaneously the truest and the fakest thing in the room.

In the aftermath of the Manila fan meeting, the silence of the hotel suite was more than just an absence of noise; it was a physical pressure that made the skin on Miu's neck prickle with a constant and unshakable heat. She stood by the window of the penthouse, the sprawling and chaotic lights of the city of Manila shimmering below like a million fallen stars. Behind her, she could hear the soft and rhythmic sound of Lena pouring a glass of water, the clink of the pitcher against the rim of the glass sounding like a gunshot in the sterile quiet.

The conversation with Tan from the night before they left Bangkok was still looping in Miu's mind like a broken film reel. His voice, filled with that devastating and quiet clarity, haunted every movement she made. He had seen it. He had seen the longing in Lena's eyes that Miu had tried so hard to categorize as mere professional devotion. Even worse, he had seen that Miu had stopped looking away.

"You're still doing it," Lena said, her voice cutting through the dark. She was standing in the shadows near the kitchen island, her silhouette sharp against the ambient glow of the city.

Miu didn't turn around. She kept her forehead pressed against the cool glass. "Doing what?"

"Thinking about him," Lena replied, her footsteps muffled by the thick carpet as she moved into the living area. "You have that specific look in your eyes. The one where you try to balance the math of your life and realize the numbers do not add up. Was it the text he sent? Or is it just the guilt of the song we sang tonight?"

Miu finally turned, her hands gripping the sleeves of her oversized sweater. The stinging awkwardness of the suite felt even more pronounced now that they were thousands of miles away from the university and the studio. "He knows. He told me before we left. He said he sees the way you look at me. He said he knows that I have stopped looking away."

Lena froze, the glass halfway to her lips. She set it down on a side table with a slow and deliberate motion, her gaze sharpening until it felt like it was pinning Miu to the spot. "And what did you say to him?"

"I told him it was a story," Miu whispered, her voice trembling. "I told him we were just telling a story for the fans. But he didn't believe me. He asked me if I was protecting him because I love him or because I am afraid of the truth about us."

Lena let out a short and bitter laugh, a sound that held no humor. She walked closer until she was standing directly in front of Miu, the space between them shrinking until the air felt heavy with the scent of their shared exhaustion and the lingering perfume from the stage. "He is smarter than I gave him credit for. It's a good question, Miu. One that I would like the answer to as well."

"I don't have an answer," Miu cried, her composure finally fracturing. "I am trying to survive this. I am trying to keep the series at the top of the charts and keep the fans happy and keep my life from falling apart. Why does everyone keep demanding that I choose?"

"Because you cannot have both!" Lena's voice rose, a rare crack appearing in her cool and composed exterior. "You cannot have the safety of a secret boyfriend and the reality of what happened between us on that set. You are asking me to be a ghost in your real life while I play your soulmate for the world. Do you have any idea how much that stings? Do you have any idea what it is like to hear ten thousand people scream for us to be together and know that the moment we walk off that stage, you are checking your phone for a sign of him?"

Miu reached out, her fingers catching the fabric of Lena's shirt, a desperate and instinctive reach for connection. "It isn't like that. When I'm on that stage with you, it is the only time I feel like I can breathe. The fans aren't the ones who make it real, P'Lena. You are. But I am terrified. If I lose him, I lose the only part of me that isn't a product. I lose the Miu that existed before the cameras and the fame."

"The Miu that existed before the cameras is already gone," Lena said, her voice softening but remaining firm. She reached up and placed her hand over Miu's, her thumb tracing the trembling line of Miu's knuckles. "She grew up. She fell in love with her partner. She realized that her safe zone wasn't a person from her past, but the person who was standing right in front of her. You are mourning a version of yourself that doesn't exist anymore."

The honesty of the statement felt like a physical weight. Miu leaned her forehead against Lena's shoulder, her tears finally falling and soaking into the dark fabric of Lena's shirt. They stood there for a long time, two women caught in a high stakes drama that no scriptwriter could have ever imagined. The city of Manila continued to hum outside their window, indifferent to the quiet and shattering revelations happening in the penthouse.

"What do we do now?" Miu asked into the silence, her voice muffled and small.

"We go back to Bangkok tomorrow," Lena said, her hand moving to stroke Miu's hair in a slow and rhythmic motion that was both a comfort and a torture.  "We film the final episodes. And we wait for the glass house to break. Because it will break, Miu. Secrets this big always find a way out into the light."

Lena pulled back just enough to look into Miu's eyes. The awkwardness was still there, a constant companion, but beneath it was a fierce and undeniable bond that even Tan's suspicions could not sever. "But until then, I will be your shield. I will play the part. Just don't ask me to pretend that I don't feel the way he thinks I do. I am done lying to myself, even if I have to keep lying to the world."

As Miu retreated to her own room later that night, she felt the echo of Lena's touch like a brand on her skin. She looked at her phone, at the unopened message from Tan, and realized that the distance between her and the life she once knew was far greater than the flight back to Thailand.

The stinging reality was that she was no longer walking on eggshells; she was standing on a bridge that was slowly burning at both ends, and the only person she wanted to reach was the one who was holding the torch.
