17 | in the dark

sweven
(n.) a vision seen in sleep; a dream

☆ ☆ ☆

My fingers tap away on the screen, eyes prying off once in a while to check if my parents wake up. I crawl through the dark, getting mom's phone from the charger, and smile idiotically at the message of Logan's mom.

Yes, Cass is fine, she's doing great!

That's good to know (:

I better go offline now, Alyssa's had a bad dream.

-Okay, say hi to Logan for me (((:

Wait a minute, this is mom's phone that I'm using. If that's the case, then she'll see random messages she knows nothing about! My heart runs in circles inside my chest, sweat trickling down my head.

And the scenery suddenly changes.

I'm peacefully inside my room, lights turned off, Knoxx and Toothless laid on the ground. Realization sweeps through as I notice my fingers intertwined with each other.

I just dreamt of Logan Chase, for the first time ever since the incident at Starbucks. And why? Because I was praying, and then I suddenly fell asleep. Logan was my next prayer.

In case you didn't know, I've always included Logan in my prayers ever since I was twelve. Is it kind of weird? I don't know, I just wanted to thank God for giving me inspiration with my writing, even though he was practically non existent in my world.

Until now.

I thank God, so much, that I actually exist to him now. I'm more than grateful that we're friends, and I think I couldn't be happier. I hug the unicorn stuffed toy next to me, the one Logan gave. And I doze off to sleep.

☆ ☆ ☆

Staring at the rain drops pouring down the window as it blurs the view, I sigh and trace a heart with my finger dreamily.

"Cass," Logan pokes my waist, making me half giggle as I take a look at him.

"What?" I ask at the monster who disrupted me from my daydreams.

"Class is over, c'mon," he says, picking up his bag.

"Oh," I say sheepishly, stuffing my notebook into my bag.

I walk out with Logan and he comes with me as I dump my things into my locker.

"I should better look for Alaine and go home," I tell him as we walk over to a distant classroom.

"Alaine? Didn't you see her walk home earlier? I heard from Camille that she was sick. Had a headache,"

"What? Ugh I didn't hear about that," I whine, running my hands through my hair.

"Well, I can give you a ride home," he offers. I feel butterflies all over me as the sentence flies out. I roll my eyes, and pinch the hem of my shirt, pouring all these messed up feelings to it.

"Nah, I'll just walk on my own," I say. It's not that I don't want to be with Logan, it's just that this new feeling I'm getting is beyond absurd and it goes on every time he's around.

"Yeah, good luck with that in the storm," he says, chuckling.

Why, why did it just have to rain?

"It's fine by me though, you could play in the water for all I care and get wet, and have a cold, and those new shoes your wearing? Yeah, yeah, bye princess, see ya' tomorrow," he says, turning around.

I run towards him and grab his arm before he disappears. An annoying smirk is fixated on his perfect face.

"Fine, drive me home," I say in disdain, letting him have his tiny victory party.

Logan holds the umbrella as we walk out through the steps. The rain isn't as strong as it was earlier, but it is enough to make me drenched in water.

Because of this, I scoot closer to Logan and wrap myself tighter around my jacket. Suddenly, it's became hot -- and I'm smart enough to say that the heat isn't from my jacket. His arm goes around my waist, pulling me closer so I dodge the rain drops. I bite my lip and mute whatever squeak or gasp might come out of me any moment.

I can't explain how utterly infuriated I am that I feel like this. Cassidy does not ever act like this! She only likes Logan Chase, and only has a CRUSH on him. Not whatever this is.

He opens the door for me and I climb in quickly, hiding the glint of amusement in my eyes. So he COULD be a gentleman! It wasn't impossible!

Logan curses as he stuffs the umbrella to the back seat and shuts the door.

"My poor car. I just had this washed yesterday," he frowns, starting the engine.

"You are way too in love with this vehicle," I mutter, rolling my eyes.

"Yes, so please refrain from touching and get your shoes off the seat," he scowls. I stomp my feet back on the ground, crossing my arms like a child.

The car ride is nothing but noisy. The clad of raindrops bumping to the car's roof sounds like we're being abuducted by aliens or invaded by zombies. In less than a minute after we rode Logan's car, the rain magically increased. Once we reach my place, I near our gate, and let a few strong raindrops kiss my skin.

The rain is deafening with matching thunder and lightning, making me jump at the sound. I'm not afraid of the thunder, but I'm always startled by it. The clouds are as gray as charcoal and the wind is making my hair sway.

"Hey, maybe you should stay for a while -- the water's so strong there's no way you'll be able to see where you're going," I inform him.

"Aw, princess wants me to stay longer!" he says, ruffling my hair. I peel his hands away and grunt in annoyance.

I and Logan enter the house quickly, and remove my bag and shoes immediately.

I glance at Hazel on the couch, clutching Toothless and Knoxx tightly.

"Cassidy, finally you're home! Could you watch out for these two? I have to help the others because the rain is over flooding the pool and I heard that there was an accident with the neighbors. A tree fell down because of the wind," she pleads.

"Sure Hazel, go help the others," I say, taking her seat and hugging the dogs in my hands. They're both afraid of the thunder, and if you don't comfort them, they'll both go nuts and break the furniture and play with tissue paper.

"Oh, I missed these two little guys," Logan says, stealing Toothless from my hands.

"Hey be careful, you dummy! They're scared," I say, brushing my hands through Knoxx's fur.

"Obviously. That's why I got him," he says, as though I'm the bad guy.

"Whatever. I'm going upstairs in my room to do homework, wanna come?" I ask. Logan smiles playfully.

"Sure," he says, winking suggestively and dropping Toothless.

"Get a hold of yourself, I said homework, not THAT," I say, standing up.

I leave my room with Logan and the dogs, entering the bathroom to change into more comfortable clothes. It's chilly and I'm shaking, so I get a new pair of socks and wrap myself inside the thickest hoodie I could find in my closet. I go back down to get some Hershey's from the ref, and walk back up.

When I get back inside my room, Knoxx and Toothless are curled up against Logan on my bed, both of them practically snoring next to him. Did I mention how cute he is next to puppies?

Smiling to myself, I head over to my study table and begin the annoying home work. I eat the chocolate minute by minute, because I just love eating sweets while studying. It helps me concentrate.

"Hey princess, mind if I have some?" Logan asks as I take the first bite, glancing at my whole jar full of chocolates. I sigh getting a pack and tossing it to him. He starts munching it down in no time.

"Just wondering, why are you not doing your homework?" I question in a bossy tone.

"Homework is boring, and I'm at your place anyway, so that counts as an excuse right?" he says, taking another chocolate bar. I shoo away his hands and hide the jar.

For the next few minutes, I do the lousy assignments I've got and try my best to ignore the constant noises Logan is making.

"Ugh. The rain isn't that strong anymore," I tell him, checking the scenery outside. I jump back in surprise when my ears hear the deafening boom of the thunder. That shut me up.

"It still hasn't stopped," he says in boredom.

"Well. I'm done with my homework now," I say chirpily, packing away my stuff and readying them for tomorrow.

"Ugh, why are you so. . . responsible?" he chuckles, standing up to inspect my things.

"Responsible? Everyone I've ever met has said that to me, since I was like, in fifth grade," I say.

"You're not technically nerdy, but I don't effin' get why you have high grades. You're not socially awkward, but you aren't completely an ambivert," he contemplates. I stay silent and let his words sink in.

Accurate.

"So, what do you -- AGHHH!" I shriek in fear as I feel myself swirl in a hole of pure darkness, and the loud boom of thunder repeats a never ending chime in my ears.

"Logan, Logan!" I squeak, feeling out my arms for any sign of any person at all.

I know it seems kinda childish and immature, but one of my fears is the darkness. It's one of the bad side effects of me being such a daydreamer and an imaginative person; I end up thinking of really scary sh*t.

"Hey, why's it all dark here?" he asks, finding my shoulders.

"The power's out, duh. Can you bring out your phone?" I ask.

"My phone's died, duh," he mimics.

Grunting, I move over to my study table, running my hands through the objects. I waste no time in turning on the flash light, and in the process, accidentally flashing the strong light towards Logan and making him stumble backwards.

I stifle in a laugh, reminding myself that I shouldn't find a single piece of humor in this.

"You could've at least pointed it in the other side, Cass! What the f*ck!" he says.

"What's done is done, Logan, don't be such a baby. Can we go out and find brightness?" I whine.

"Did you just call me baby, Cassidy French?" he asks, inching towards me.

Suddenly I thank the heavens that it's dark, so he doesn't see how red my face is.

"S-shut up for once, o-okay?" I ask, though Logan Chase being quiet is the most impossible thing in the world.

I storm away from my room as Toothless and Knoxx follow. My phone beeps and I answer it immediately.

"Hello, mom?" I ask, jogging towards downstairs.

"Hi Cass, are you okay there at home?"

"Well not really, the power is out! Logan's also here by the way,"

"Cass listen, me and your father might not be home tonight, but we're fine. Your dad and I booked this hotel near the office, so we'll be staying there for the mean time because it will be dangerous if we go home. Clear?"

"Yeah," I mumble.

"And also, please stay safe there. I heard classes are suspended tomorrow, so you won't be going to school. Stay safe, and make sure to watch out for the dogs before they tear the house apart. Understood?"

"Yep," I say.

"Okay bye, love you!" she says. I wait for her to drop the phone, but she doesn't, and I hear dad talking to mom.

I giggle absent-mindedly. Mom has to learn how to drop the phone after a call.

I go to my parents' room, searching for the stash of flashlights. Once I find the drawer where it's hidden, I internally curse. Only one of them is working, because they all don't have batteries. But at least it has strong light though.

"My parents aren't coming home. Again." I say. "And I don't think you will either, the rain still hasn't stopped and it's like seven pm now,"

"Shoot. Now I'm stranded." he complains, but his eyes glint brighter as though he thinks of something. "But. . . at least it's at your place," he says.

WHAT?

☆ ☆ ☆

By seven thirty, I'm back up in my bedroom with Logan, and I am nothing but bored. All of our gadgets are hanging out in their graveyard, and me and Logan are seated in front of each other. His legs are spread in front of him, as I'm hugging my knees.

"20 questions?" I ask, twirling my hair.

"Thought you'd never ask." he says.

"Hmm. But don't ask any boring ones. I'm sick of what's your favorite this and what's you're favorite that." I mumble. He smiles at me.

Weirdo.

"Who's your crush?" he asks.

"No one," I say nervously.

"Seriously, Cass? You just told me when we were at the library, remember?"

"Fine. They're all fictional, so whatever YA book you know, I might probably like the boys there." I say. He takes a look at me for a moment, as though wanting to say more, but lets the moment pass anyway.

"Have you ever been friend zoned?" I say.

He looks at me even longer, studying my features. With just a glance at those blue eyes shining in the dark, it's as though I can read everything going on in his head. But everything I think of is too good to be true.

"I'm not sure. I don't know if she has feelings for me or not." he responds.

Shoot. Don't think of anything Cass, stop over thinking.

"Why do you love unicorns?" he asks. I grin at the question.

"I don't know -- I've always loved them since I was a little girl and they're just so cute,"

"What's your greatest fear?"

"Losing the people I love."

"Yours?"

"The dark. Clowns. Flying cockroaches. The thought of not being able to make my dream a reality."

"What's your favorite childhood memory?"

"Probably. . . that one time when I got this blue race car. It was operated by a remote, and it was the best toy I had ever had. I still have it up till now, I think."

"Blue race car? Was it Hot Wheels? And did you get it when you were like, 3 or 5?" I ask. He nods his head in curiosity.

"If I'm not mistaken, I think I gave you that car! I had chosen it from the toy store because it looked cool, but I also hated it because it was so boyish. I remember it up till now because I kinda liked it. It was a present you got from preschool, was it?"

"Yes, yes it was. My turn!" he says.

"What's the biggest problem you've ever had?"

I look at the boy in front of me, a bunch of questions stirring if I should trust him or not. My life is a maze filled with a ton load of problems, but there's only one that affects me until now.

"Sixth grade. I was twelve years old, innocent. I was still the typical child that loved sunshines and daisies. Not exactly that immature, but you get the point. I. . . I had never experienced any SERIOUS problems, because the world seemed like such a happy and good place. . . but I was different back then. I know you won't believe me, and it DOES seem like such a measly conflict, but --"

I drop in dead silence as the lights flicker and come to a stop, blackness surrounding everywhere I look.

"Shit, Logan!" I say, feeling myself shudder. The sound of a whistle runs through, a cause of the strong winds. I spread my arms wide, looking for any sign of him. That jerk.

"Logan, I'm not kidding!" I say, my eyes suddenly tearing up. I jump when a finger pokes me in the waist and a pair of arms carry me to my bed.

Omg omg omg, Logan Chase is carrying me.

I hit him in the chest when I hear him laugh, collapsing to the seat next to him.

"Don't do that, seriously!"

"Okay, sorry! You just looked really funny, I won't do it again. Promise," he says.

"Well you better sure not to. I will literally feed you to sharks if you do that again."

"Ha ha, I'm so afraid," he says, chuckling again.

"Oh, Logan Chase doesn't believe me then. I guess I'll just have to message everyone that photo Alyssa had sent me. You know, the one where she drew hearts all around your face with paint," I say.

"WHAT? Alyssa messaged you? How?"

"Your mom's account. And if I hear that you get mad at her, I will also spread the picture."

He grunts in annoyance. Look who's laughing now.

"Okay fine, I won't mess with you. Now shut up with your laughing," he says.

Smiling to myself, I suddenly realize that my hand is encircled around his wrist, and my leg is brushing against his. I don't move though, because I was just born to have a phobia of the dark.

Eventually, my eyelids drop slowly, and I feel myself being lifted, and a pillow being brought against my head. The warmth from Logan's hand that envelopes mine stays still, making me unconsciously bring it next to my cheek.

"Goodnight, princess,"

author's note

cue the drum roll. . .

I am back! And I'm still writing Utterly Impossible, yes.

Sooo, if you've been reading this book, you'll probebly notice that I am the worst at updating, but I'm less busier for the next few months. If ever you're reading this, just tell me in the comments section, the day of the week you would most like me to update (: I'd appreaciate if you did.

And, on other matters, the current banners on Utterly Impossible will be changed. Sadly ): . I accidentally deleted all my previous graphics, so I just decided to make new ones. I'll be adding some more aesthetics maybe, by December, and you'll see the new graphics soon.
