Chapter 7
-- "You cannot live with a paw in each world"--
Maplepaw jolted up to her paws at the feeling of blood lust, but there was no one near her. In fact, all she could see was white blank space.
"Maybe this is how Jayfeather felt." Maplepaw meowed to herself, waiting for a StarClan to naturally appear and tell her something.
"You're such a mousebrain Maplepaw." The voice of Jayfeather came into Maplepaw's ears and all she could do was screech in joy. "What are you trying to do? Make me deaf as well as blind!?" He asked as his pelt became clear as day next to the relief filled she-cat.
"I missed you." Maplepaw meowed honestly, though she had only lost him recently.
"You're such an annoying kit. I only just died! For StarClan's sake, you need to learn how to make friends besides old grumps like me." Jayfeather meowed with a rumble of laughter.
"Enough said, what did you call me here for?" Maplepaw asked becoming serious once more. Jayfeather nodded padding in a direction with purpose, though all Maplepaw could see in every direction was nothing but white space.
"I know it's been hard enough on you already, but I have a prophecy for you." Jayfeather meowed his ears twitching like wild fire.
The white space suddenly morphed into a large pool of crystal clear water. Jayfeather had gone silent, so Maplepaw did the same.
"Blood will fall from the darkness. Only the red feathers can lift the clans to safety." Jayfeather meowed as blood trickled down into the pool, making it turn to a dark blood colored pool.
"I see, thank you for your visit Jayfeather. I hope you fair well in StarClan." The she-cat meowed humbly dipping her head to the medicine cat. He did the same.
"I am happy here. I can see the world before me. I bid you farewell, Maplepaw."
-
Maplepaw awoke to the sound of coughing. A loud echo of pain sounded in ThunderClan's camp. Maplepaw felt the need to report her dream to Bramblestar. She was wondering where the coughing noise was coming from, but she thought of that as a mission two.
"What is it Maplepaw? You look like you got no sleep." Ripplepaw meowed as he stretched behind her in his nest.
"It's nothing." Maplepaw meowed flicking her tail to show the discussions end.
Padding out of the apprentice's den, Maplepaw could see dozens of cats lined up with Silverwhisp rushing to each of them- herbs in mouth.
Maplepaw sighed, guessing that whitecough had come already. She quickly passed all the cats, but when she spotted Breezepaw in the line, she immediately stopped.
"Breezepaw? Are you feeling unwell?" Maplepaw asked the she-cat.
Breezepaw turned to her best friend, her nose running, her eyes looking exhausted, and she was having a coughing fit.
"Yeah, I think we all caught whitecough. Silverwhisp is doing her best to treat everyone, though we can all tell she is having a hard time without the guidance of Jayfeather." Breezepaw meowed as Silverwhisp ran to the two she-cats, her breath in short rasps, as if she had just run the whole territory and back.
"What seems to be the matter, Breezepaw?" Silverwhisp asked as she looked around the she-cat's body.
"I'm coughing, runny nose, I feel sealy tired and drained of energy, and I feel hot." Breezepaw meowed as Silverwhisp grabbed herbs from a pouch of tied leaves.
"It seems that each cat has whitecough. Take these herbs; feverfew, and some catnip. If you need help sleeping, come to my den." Silverwhisp meowed moving to Emberpetal who was sneezing and looked like she'd fallen into a mud puddle.
"You should get some rest Breezepaw. I'm going to go talk to Bramblestar." Maplepaw meowed padding off to Bramblestar's den. She was worried about all of ThunderClan, but she knew whitecough comes around almost every year and that never stopped them before.
"Bramblestar, may I enter?" She asked stopping at the entrance to her leader's den.
"Please do, Maplepaw." Bramblestar meowed as Maplepaw quickly entered.
"Jayfeather gave me a prophecy." Maplepaw meowed quickly, leaving no time for Bramblestar to ask what she needed.
"He did, did he?" Bramblestar asked, rising to his paws. "What did he say?"
"Blood will fall from the darkness. Only the red feathers can lift the clans to safety." Maplepaw meowed as she remembered the medicine cat's words. "I am now worried about the clans safety. What do you think we should do?" She asked looking to her leader for an answer.
"I'm not sure, what would Firestar do?" Bramblestar asked padding out of his den with Maplepaw following close behind.
"The question is Bramblestar, what would you do?" Maplepaw asked as Bramblestar looked at his young apprentice. His eyes filled with a shining respect for the she-cat.
"I think it's best to let the prophecy resolve itself. That's the only option we can hope for at this point." Bramblestar meowed after thinking for a moment. Maplepaw nodded, respecting her leader's decision.
"I agree. I don't think we can do anything else, but wait." Maplepaw meowed as Bramblestar stopped in front of Emberpetal who was coughing and sneezing. Her fur looked bristled and ruffled.
"Emberpetal, I think you need some rest, I'll take over from here." Bramblestar meowed. Emberpetal was organizing patrols despite her condition.
"I don't agree Bramblestar! I am in a perfect condition to organize partr-" She was stopped by a coughing fit. Despite her attitude, Emberpetal was a understanding cat. She was rebellious in her nature, but she was a perfect fit for a leader. Though she might not be the smartest cat.
"Don't worry Emberpetal, I think I can handle to task of organizing patrols. Leader's orders; get some rest and get better." Bramblestar meowed his tone was not harsh, but it was strong and gave no sign of weakness. Emberpetal didn't argue anymore, she padded away to the warrior's den. Her tail dragging in the snow behind her.
"She sure is a rebel. But a loyal rebel." Maplepaw meowed giving a laugh. Bramblestar nodded, but when Cloudtail padded up to him, he asked his apprentice to check the ShadowClan border quickly.
Maplepaw nodded, rushing away to ShadowClan's border. The wind was picking up, but she didn't show the wind any weakness. She felt ready for Jayfeather's prophecy, though it didn't mean she wasn't worried.
"Please StarClan make sure no cat gets hurt." She wasn't sure if her silent prayer was heard or not, but she still felt the tingle of hope in her heart. "Please."
