Chapter 8

--"Great, lets round up all the useless cats and hope a tree falls on them"-- 'Jayfeather'

Maplepaw came to a stop when she spotted two ShadowClan cats at the edge of the border. She became suspicious when they started to peer over to ThunderClan's side of the border. Her pelt pricked up with anger and more feelings she didn't know. She altogether felt betrayed, hurt, angry.

The cats looked at each other and were have a conversation, though they were too far away for Maplepaw's ears to catch what they were saying.

When Maplepaw saw a mouse run past her and out into the open, she studied the other cats eyes. They were both looking at the mouse. Dead silent.

Maplepaw didn't move, nor did she speak a word as the two cats passed the border, their eyes locked on the small mouse.

The ShadowClan cats did look skinny and rugged, like they hadn't had a decent meal for a while. She could recognize the two cats as the drew near. She spotted the light brown fur of Owlclaw, and the dark grey fur of Scorchfur. She'd seen them at a gathering.
She watched as they killed the mouse and walked back onto ShadowClan's side of the border, like nothing happened. Maplepaw let out a hiss of anger. She could stand to watch without saying anything. She padded out of the bushes and into the open.

Owlclaw seemed startled as Maplepaw hissed at the two warriors, anger prickling inside her as she looked at the mouse in Scorchfur's jaws.

"You would dare break the warrior code for a mouse!? I can't believe you would do that!" Maplepaw hissed as Scorchfur and Owlclaw looked at each other, claws now unsheathed and ready to attack the small apprentice. "And you would have the audacity to attack an apprentice for your pride? Isn't that already gone?" Maplepaw let her claws slide out as the two large toms came back to the ThunderClan's side of the border.

Maplepaw could suddenly smell a strange and familiar smell. It was the metallic scent she had picked up before Jayfeather died. She felt a strange feeling of worry, but shoved it aside as the two cats let out a battle cry.

Maplepaw ducked as Owlclaw slashed at her. She jumped up onto Scorchfur's back as he tried to grab the apprentice. She lacked in strength yes, but that doesn't mean she lacked in speed.

Owlclaw lept up trying to slash at Maplepaw but she quickly jumped from the warrior's back. Owlclaw's claws dug into Scorchfur's pelt. Maplepaw felt a sense of pride, but she soon felt a different feeling as Owlclaw lept onto her, his eyes glowing with a rage Maplepaw had never seen before.

"How dare you! You fox-heart, you can't even battle like a warrior! And you wonder why all of ShadowClan hates you kittypet, crowfood-eating, ThunderClan cats!" Owlclaw hissed as he dug his claws into Maplepaw's pelt. She screamed as blood trickled down her body.

Cold. It's so cold. She couldn't get up, a large weight seemed to hold her down. Was this my prophecy StarClan? To die out of loyalty to my clan? Maplepaw couldn't understand what StarClan was thinking. Giving the least reasonable cat a prophecy. What a mistake.

"Cats like you are better off dead!" Owlclaw hissed she he swatted the small apprentice into a tree. A loud thud echoed in Maplepaw's ears as she felt the trickle of pain all the way down to her tail tip. Was this it? Was she going to die?

Cold. It was so cold.
