Chapter 11
Anika sat by candle light on the floor of the bush, next to a large stone and stick. She held a small, pointed stone in her hand, and was driving it back and forth over the larger stone. The cross-legged girl was lost in her own thoughts. It was time to make a move. But was this move correct? Anika sighed. It had to be done. A decision between her life or death. And possibly... "No. Not Kyra's. She didn't have a choice."
The morning sun rose up between the trees, and Anika put the candle to her mouth and blew softy, watching the flame diminish. She dropped it in her bag and took the pointed stone and stick. Anika fastened them together with some animal sinew and threw her new spear, like a javelin. It landed twenty or so meters in front of her. Anika ran to pick it up. As she did so, she noticed a footprint in the ground, big enough to be...
Anika frowned and bit her lip. She drove the spear downward into the footprint and the tears flowed. The tiger killed Kyra. She must take justice.
Revenge.
Anika walked slowly back to the tree with her backpack. She unzipped it and placing her spear on the ground beside her, rummaged around inside for something to eat. Nothing. Anika grumbled and picked up her spear again. She looked around for an edible animal and spotted a mole. "Better than nothing." She mumbled and as quick as lightning, threw the spear so that it landed in the back of the mole. Food.
Anika sat next to the hungry fire, watching the flames dance and leap. A moment later the mole had turned just the right colour, so she extinguished the fire and cut up the mole with her pocket knife. Big, juicy chunks of meat filled her stomach and she wrapped the leftovers in some leaves, and placed them in her bag.
"Now, water." Anika dug inside her bag and dug out her empty drink bottle. She put on her shoes and dragged herself back into the bush. Hours and hours went by before Anika heard the splashing of a river. She ran to the water source and gulped down the icy cold, crisp water. When she had drank more than enough, she held under her bottle to be filled up. She screwed on the lid and began to make her way back. But the temptation of the water was too strong. "It's not like anyone will see me. And besides, I haven't bathed in two months!" She told herself, as she undressed and placed her clothes in a nearby tree.
Anika dove into the water and opened her eyes. All she could see was the rocky bottom and clear water all around her. The water was freezing at first, but Anika didn't mind. It was freedom, splashing around with no limits. When the sky turned to pink and the sun began to sink, Anika pulled herself out of the lake and stood in a patch of sunlight to drip dry. The sunlight warmed her body after the freezing water. She could hear the birds singing, and remembered last night with a smile.
With her slightly damp clothes on, Anika trudged back through the bush, happier and slightly cleaner. She climbed up two or three branches and lay down. Though the uncomfortableness of the branch, Anika fell fast asleep. A milky moon rose up before her and stars glistened in the sky. Some say stars can tell the future. But do they know what tomorrow brings?
