Chapter 12
The sun crept above the trees, over the horizon. Anika stood, completely still, waiting for the day to arrive. The sun pushed it's way out of a cloud and the bush was bathed in sunlight. Anika squinted against the light and waited for her eyes to adjust. Anika gulped. "It's time."
Anika held onto the branch like a monkey bar, and let go. Her feet touched the ground and carried her to her bag. Anika tipped everything out except for a candle, a match or two, a dagger, a water bottle, some left over mole and a blanket. She slipped on her worn boots and picked up her hunting spear. She heaved the back pack onto her back and slapped a mosquito that had settled on her arm. Now, where to go next?
Anika picked her way in between fallen branches and bush debris. With absolutely no idea where to go, Anika walked down a path that she had made ages ago, hoping that this would lead her to her destination.
Past midday, Anika was still wandering through unknown land, and a cry started to build up in her throat. She wouldn't find the cave again, she was sure. She had no clue where she was and didn't know whether she could find her way back. With every step her back pack became heavier, when all of a sudden, she couldn't carry it. So Anika leant up against a tree and dropped her bag beside her. She took out her bottle and squirted some water into her mouth. "I've got to make this last all day." She thought, though her thirst wasn't quite quenched.
Next, she debated whether to eat some of the mole. Her hunger now verses her hunger later. A desperate growl from her stomach settled the debate and Anika took out the left over meat. When her hunger was satisfied, Anika placed the meat back in her bag and tried to pick it up again. She could, with all of her strength, but after a few more minutes of walking, Anika dropped it again. With a yell of anger and frustration, Anika kicked a tree stump and sank to the ground. Tears filled her eyes, but Anika vigorously wiped them away. Anika lay on her back looking up to the sky. She couldn't stop the tears.
The sky grew dark and Anika gave in to sleep.
A young girl lay on the ground inside a dark cave. Her open blue eyes were the only light, the only happiness for miles. The cave sinks into despair once more. The girls eyes are closed. Her limp body is gradually changing. White into orange, nails to claws, eyes to...
A figure loomed over the girl, spear in hand, anger burning in eyes. A scream echoes through the cave as the spear flies.
