Chapter 5
Abgail and Sadie each sit in a fold- out lounge chair on the porch of Sadie's house. Abgail had just completed explaining to Sadie about the awkward scenario at the cemetery with her father.
"Did he say anything to you?" Sadie asks.
"Just, that seeing my mom's headstone was a long overdue visit. That's about it". Abgail pauses. "At least he was doing right by my mom".
"He should be. He waited long enough" Saide replies. "I'm sure Jessie didn't want him there".
"No, she didn't. Not at all" Abgail tells her.
"Do you think he'll reach out to you?" Sadie asks, gaining a shrug from Abgail. "I might not have the right to say this, but maybe you be open to rekindling a relationship. He might give you answers, Jesse refuses to".
Abgail begins to say that she had visited Mr. Nelson the prior night. But she closes her mouth. Sadie apologizes, for feeling like she had wrongly overstepped. Abgail shrugs again and says its fine. Later she returns home. Upstairs, Jesse organizes and pulls out a couple of items from her hope chest. Abgail closes the front door, heads upstairs and pauses in a bedroom doorway.
"Abgail, is that you?". Jesse sits on the floor.
Abgail turns around and heads into the bedroom.
"I want to be honest with you. I didn't know your dad was in town or knew he'd just appear at the cemetery like that". Jesse pauses, staring at the inside of her hope chest. "I promise I've had no contact with him".
"I believe that. Is that all?" Abgail half asks.
"Owen loved your mom. She was everything to him. You must know that, believe that in some way. He would never abandon you. He left town because he thought that would be better for you and your mom" Jesse explains.
"Okay,". Abgail takes a seat on the bed.
There is a tense moment of silence and Jesse sighs.
"I dreaded this day". Jesse gets up from the floor and sits down on the bed beside Abgail.
"Why? What do you dread so much?" Abgail asks.
"Do you recall when I said there is family secrets, that you don't know" Jesse begins.
"Yeah," Abgail replies, simply.
"Abgail, there is a reason to why I brought you and Mr. Nelson together. A reason to why he invited you to the bonfire. Abgail, do you really desire the truth? A hundred percent the truth. No holding back" Jesse explains.
"Yes. The truth would be nice, amazing actually". Abgail gets up from her seat and turns around to face Jesse. "What's the truth?".
"You're a gift, in more than a few ways. Abgail, your mom was an alpha to a group...a special group of people. Special people like you" Jesse confesses. "Abgail, you have a unique gift inside you, that frankly because of me has been kept a secret long enough. Abgail, you are a werewolf. You have dormant wolf genetics, that you've had all your life".
Abgail stares at her, shocked.
"Abby, I know this a lot to take in" Jesse understands. "Do you have any questions? Oh, Abby. I'm so sorry I never explained any of this until now. I was so sure if I didn't say anything. That I'd be protecting you. Like I promised your mom".
"Do I have to be concerned from now on every time there is a full moon? Do I have to commit murder to activate my wolf genetics? How do I handle this?" Abgail asks, starting to freak out a little.
"You'll be able to handle this. I'll help you. Mr. Nelson will help you" Jesse promises. "I'm sure other members of the bonfire will assist you to".
"What do I do about Sadie? Do I tell her? Do I not tell her?" Abgail asks. "Sadie has been my friend since kindergarten. But if I tell her something like this, she'll believe I'm nuts. But if she didn't know, I'd possibly be placing her in danger".
"Abby, calm down. You don't have to worry about that now. Just settle with the news. Then figure out what you're going to do "Jesse suggests.
"Yeah, sounds good" Abgail replies.
"I am sorry Abgail. I tried to uphold your mom's wishes" Jesse apologizes.
"I understand why you did what you did" Abgail replies, not desiring to have Jesse feeling bad.
"And hey, don't worry about Sadie. She'll understand what you have to inform her. She'll be on your side through whatever" Jesse assures.
Later in the week, Abgail visits Mr. Nelson. She finds him outside, residing by the edge of the water. Abgail closes the door of her car and starts to walk to where he happens to reside.
"Mr. Nelson. I talked to Jesse. I know why you called me special" Abgail states.
Just then, the cabin door opens and Owen emerges.
"Well, I'd be hopeful for you to visit. But I'm sure you're here for Mr. Nelson. I get it. Abgail, I just want to put this out there. We both reside in the same town. If you don't want me around or any sort of relationship between us. I'll understand that and respect a boundary" Owen explains.
"Okay," Abgail replies, unsure how to behave to this information.
"Really, I mean that. You call the shots". Owen walks down the steps. "I'm headed into town. I'll return later".
Mr. Nelson starts to walk closer to her and suggests that they relocate into the cabin.
"He loves you, Abgail. Even if he acts standoffish" Mr. Nelson tells her.
"Well, if he lets me...I would like to get to know him". Abgail follows up the cabin steps.
"A relationship will come in time". Mr. Nelson opens the screen door and allows her to enter first. "So, you talked to Jesse. How are you digesting the news?".
"Still processing...slowly...frighteningly" Abgail answers. "Is Cody here?".
"No, he is off with friend. It's just us. Did Jesse tell you anything else?". Mr. Nelson sits down in his recliner.
"That you'd be able to continue helping me. So would others that attend the bonfire. Speaking of the bonfire, is that why there is a selective guest list? Everyone there, are they all wolves as well?".
"Yes. Young wolves from local packs" Mr. Nelson answers.
"How'd you meet my mom and aunt?" Abgail asks, curious.
"Your grandpa brought them here. Aurora showed signs first. Then Jesse. But both found their place. You will too" Mr. Nelson answers.
"How do I activate my dormant genetics? Is it like in all those CW shows? Do I have to commit murder?" Abgail asks, seriously. Mr. Nelson quietly hesitates. "Please, tell me the truth". Abgail's eyes water. "I don't want to be a murderer".
Mr. Nelson looks down at the ring on his finger. "You don't have to be a killer, if you don't want to".
"What does that mean?" Abgail asks.
"There are ways to dodge the temptations". Mr. Nelson pauses. "As for being prisoner to the full moon, that can't be avoided".
Abgail adjusts her position on the couch. "Does the transition hurt?".
"From going to human to wolf form". Abgail nods. "I won't lie. The transition is unpleasant. Especially the first time".
"Does the transition happen every full moon?" Abgail asks.
"For the first full moon, the transition is uncontrollable and takes up most of the night. The first transition is a rite of passage" Mr. Nelson answers.
"And after that," Abgail says, hoping for a more pleasant response.
"It is up to you. You might want to be in your wolf form, more than you think" Mr. Nelson suggests.
"And what if I don't want to be in my wolf form or really want anything to do with my wolf side at all?" Abgail asks.
"Every young wolf must endure one full moon. One transition". Mr. Nelson notices the disappointed look on Abgail's face. "Abgail, there is nothing wrong with you".
"I have a dark secret, a curse I don't even know how to explain. Let alone live with" Abgail explains.
"There are a couple of items that can suppress your wolf form. But these paths won't help you at this very moment because you've never transitioned before" Mr. Nelson informs her.
"So how do you suggest I tell someone who isn't part of this world?" Abgail asks. "How do I explain all of this in a way where this person doesn't make the conclusion that I need to go to a nuthouse".
"Uh..." Mr. Nelson begins.
Then the front door of the cabin opens, Cody and the blonde girl enter. Cody apologizes for interrupting, then they both head down the hall to Cody's bedroom. The blonde girl looks back at Abgail and whispers something inaudibly to Cody.
"I don't think I can provide any advice. I think that is something you need to figure out yourself" Mr. Nelson explains.
Abgail leans back on the couch and looks down at her hands on her lap.
"Before you go, I have something for you from your mom". Mr. Nelson turns around and picks up a wooden box with half-moons carved into the side of it from behind his chair. "I received this box on the night Aurora died. Cruel dose of life, I guess".
Abgail takes the box from him and places her hand on the lid.
"Maybe the self-discovery of what has been left to you should be a solo activity" Mr. Nelson suggests, before she starts to open it. Trying to spare himself from having to view the contents or generally have anything to do with it.
"Oh, okay" Abgail replies, resetting the lid.
Later, Abgail arrives home. She goes to her room, sets the box on the bed and just finds herself staring at it. Her mind drifting to what the contents could possibly be. She stands by her dresser with her arms crossed. What secrets did the box hold? What were her mother's final words to her?
