Chapter 6
Another morning begins; Abgail awakes. She sits cross-legged in her bed, momentarily remaining underneath the covers. She stares at the wooden box on her dresser. She self analyzes the last few days, desperately wishing everything was all linked to a weird dream. But she knew, unfortunately, all of this was her actual reality. She exits her bed, picks up the box from her dresser and brings it over to her bed.
Abgail places her hand on the lid. "Okay mom. Let's see what you have to say".
Suddenly, there is a knock on the closed bedroom door. Abgail turns her head; hearing Jesse inform her that Sadie is here. Abgail rushes to hide the box. She turns around, just in time to see Sadie open the door and enter the room.
"Hey Abs. I was curious if you wanted to go to the diner for breakfast" Sadie suggests.
"Yeah sure. Let me, just get my shoes". Abgail ventures over to her closet and picks up a pair of sneakers.
"What's this?" Sadie asks, noticing the tipped over box on the bed.
Abgail freezes.
"Oh, nothing. Just something my mom left me". Abgail hurries over, scoops up the contents back into the box and then relocates the box onto a shelf in the closet. She shuts the door.
"Oh, alright" Sadie replies, feeling weird.
"Let's head to the diner" Abgail announces, leading Sadie out of the room.
Shortly after arriving at the diner, Abgail notices Cody at the counter. He appears to be picking up a takeout order. Abgail excuses herself from the table, ventures over to the counter and greets Cody.
"Oh, hi" Cody replies.
"So, how are you?" Abgail asks.
"Uh, fine" Cody answers, sensing her serious tone. "How are you?".
"I've been better,". Abgail looks over to Sadie at the table. "I know you saw me talking to your uncle. I know a lot more, than I once did".
"Okay, what do you want me to do about it?" Cody asks.
"Maybe, you could help me. We could talk...sometime" Abgail answers.
"I'm not your babysitter" Cody reminds her. "Besides, we already have this guy with us".
"My dad," Abgail informs.
"That explains it. Why he reminds me of you" Cody replies.
"So, does that mean we can talk sometimes?". Abgail pauses. "Maybe get to understand what I'm going through from a younger source".
Then the glass door opens, the blonde girl from bonfire enters. Her name happened to be Ashley.
"What are you still doing at the counter?" Ashley asks. "Oh, you. Of course, you'd be cutting into my precious date time".
"Ash, back off. We were just talking" Cody tells her.
"Whatever. She can find her own assistance elsewhere". Ashley takes his arms, the paper food bag off the counter and leads him away.
"What was that all about?" Sadie asks when Abgail returns to the table.
"A territorial girlfriend being jealous for no reason" Abgail answers.
"Odd," Sadie comments.
"Very" Abgail agrees.
"So, you don't-" Sadie begins to ask.
"Not in the least" Abgail interjects.
"Just curious, what were you and Cody conversing about?" Sadie asks.
"Uh, the next bonfire" Abgail lies, deciding to hold off releasing her secret.
"Oh, how nice". Sadie rolls her eyes.
A waitress comes over to the table, asks for and collects their orders.
"So, have you talked to your dad?" Sadie asks.
"No, not really. He is staying with Mr. Nelson. Well, I guess we sort of talked. He offered that if I wanted a relationship with him. The decision is up to me" Abgail answers.
"That was kind of him" Sadie replies. "Do you think you want a relationship with him? I mean, do you think you'll end up having a relationship with him".
Abgail shrugs. "I feel like out of respect to my mother. I should give him the chance".
"Makes sense. Have you told Jesse, that you're considering having a relationship with him?" Sadie asks.
"No, not yet" Abgail answers.
"From how you explained the cemetery scenario, your dad doesn't seem to be her favorite person. Though that's understandable for obvious reasons" Sadie explains.
Meanwhile Jesse hears a dark gray truck pull up and park outside. The driver's side door opens. Owen exits and proceeds to cross the street. Jesse observes him from the window. He walks up the two steps, across the porch and knocks on the door. Slowly, Jesse makes her way to the front door. She pauses in the hall. Owen knocks on the door again.
"Jesse, please give me a chance. I gave Abgail power to control our relationship. But please, let me explain. You know more than anyone, how much Aroura meant to me. What I'd do for you. What I would do for Abby. Even if you don't believe this, what'd I do for Aroura. Jesse, please. Let's talk" Owen explains.
Then the door is unlocked and opened.
"How much Aroura meant to you, huh. Do you have any idea how much you broke her heart by leaving? Did you know she desired to work out your disagreement regrading Abgail? That she was considering changing her opinion. Do you have any idea what absence does to a young girl? What are the psychological effects? What your absence has done to Abgail throughout her life?" Jesse inquires, demandingly.
"I regret some of my past choices" Owen admits.
"Come in". Jesse moves out of the doorway.
He enters and the door is closed behind him. Jesse ventures off to the living room, hopeful Owen won't be staying long. Jesse sits down on the couch, leans back, crosses her legs and awaits a further explanation for the absent years. She tilts her head to the side, still looking very displeased.
"I did attempt to reach out, mainly for Abgail. Aurora asked me not to. She said, a clean break for Abgail would be best". Owen pauses. "I presume by the look on your face, she never told you this".
"Uh, no she didn't. Though if she did, I would've suggested or her to separate completely from you" Jesse tells him.
"Wow. Okay. I'm getting the sense you don't think highly of me. Though to some degree, I deserve it" Owen replies.
"I used to think very highly of you, once. I used to actually consider that you were good for Aurora. But now, I don't trust you or really want anything to do with you...and regardless of what Abgail decides, you two will never associate with each other underneath this roof" Jesse explains, sternly. "Now, it's time for you to go".
Owen passes back through the living room doorway. He opens the door partly and apologizes for what he has previously done. Jesse chooses to be quiet.
Later Abgail returns home. She had enjoyed her time with Sadie. But she feels guilty for not being honest with Sadie about her life changing news. As she ventures up the walkway, beginning to feel more guilty. But she promised herself, once she had completely settled on the right explanation, she would expose her secret to Sadie. The front door opens and falls closed. Jesse appears to be sitting on the couch.
"Your father visited," Jesse informs, before Abgail enters the living room. "He mentioned that he gave you control to have a possible relationship with him". Jesse pauses. "We've always had an open, honest household. Regardless of your final decision with him, he is not welcome in this house. Not ever".
"Okay, understood" Abgail replies, carefully not pushing the subject.
Then Jesse leaves her seat on the couch and departs the living room. Abgail remains in the living room, feeling conflicted about her impending future.
