Chapter Nine

*Rough Draft*

As I walk behind Will, feeling like I'm on cloud nine, I notice Blake is being pestered by some immensely pretty dark-skinned woman. Seeing me, Blake runs out of her grasp and straight into my arms.

Blake holds on to me tightly as I walk past Will. He had stopped to talk with the woman and for a moment I thought he would introduce me to her, but he looked away when I had reached them.

Feeling a pang of hurt, I continue walking and asked Blake what was wrong.

"I don't like her," he says. "I like you much better." I kept myself from laughing. Wait, why was I so happy Blake disliked her but liked me?

"Why don't you like her?"

"She makes daddy different."

I almost stop walking when Blake said that. I take a deep breath and continue on.

Before I know it, I see Pierre opening the door for me. I smile gratefully at him as I walk inside. I motion with my head for him to come inside, too. He must get bored standing outside a gate all day.

Pierre leads me to the guest room, which looks more like a ginormous living room fashioned with beautiful velvet sofas, hanging chandeliers, expensive landscape paintings, and a lush white carpet.

If it weren't for Pierre watching, I would have happily spent my day dozing on either the pristine white carpet or the sofas.

I set Blake down and watched him scamper off deeper into the room. I turned to face Pierre.

"You think you could get my friend Shana here?" I asked.

"Of course," he nodded. I smiled.

"Cool. Thanks, Pierre." He bowed slightly and left the room. I turned around, about to call for Blake when I noticed I couldn't see him anywhere. "Blake?"

"Come and find me!" I heard his voice say. Shaking my head, I grinned. Hide and Seek. What a classic.

I looked behind sofas, underneath the lamp tables, and even in the sofa cushions and still couldn't find him. I heard him giggle from time to time, except I couldn't tell from where. The little rascal probably knew every secret room there was.

Now crawling on all fours, I make my way searching under the lamp tables when I hear someone walk into the room. In my effort to look normal, I try to get out from under the table, only manage to knock my head into it.

"Brea?" Will's voice cuts through my embarrassment. Rubbing my head, I squeeze myself out from under the table to face him.

"Yeah?"

"Can I ask what you're doing?" By the sound of his voice he seemed just as embarrassed. Probably because that woman was standing at his side, smiling at me.

"Oh, I'm looking for Blake," I say, then realize I sound like a complete idiot saying that.

"How could our pretty babysitter lose Blake?" The lady asks, feigning care. And did she just say 'our'?

"We're playing Hide and Seek," I say, trying to hide the snappiness in my voice. Will smiles a bit before telling the woman to hurry out of the guest room so they could talk. The woman turned to go but Will stayed, using his head to indicate towards the left.

I turned my head in the direction he had pointed out, and I noticed a movement by the heavily curtained window. Grinning to myself I tip toe over to the windowsill, now clearly seeing the bulge behind the curtains.

Swiping the curtains in a quick motion I yell, "Gotcha!"

Blake squeals, dashing away before I can catch him.

"You can't catch me, I'm the gingerbread man!" he shouted, looking over his shoulder to smile at me. "Oof!" He bumps into Will's legs. "Daddy!" he shouts, holding onto Will.

Will bends down, ruffling his hair. "Did I catch you, little man?"

Blake puffs up his chest.

"You didn't catch me. I caught you!"

I walk over to them, unable to stop myself from smiling. These two were just too cute. Will picks up Blake, lifting him into the air. He catches him, kissing Blake's cheek, before handing him over to me. Our hands touch, making me involuntarily blush.

"Can't Daddy play with us?" Blake asked, twisting himself to look at his father.

"Yeah, forget business for a half hour," I hear myself saying. I bit my tongue, fighting the blush in my cheeks at Will's shocked stare.

"Unfortunately, no, Blake, Daddy can't." He quickly turns and leaves the room. I frown. Blake does the same, except, it looked like he was going to cry.

"Blake," I start, before he does start to cry. I rub his back and walk around the room, speaking softly to him. "It's okay, Blake."

"Daddy doesn't like me," he responds, "that's why he never takes me to the park like Sally's daddy or Ben's daddy." I pause, trying to figure out what to say. "Uncle Pierre says it's because daddy loves me but it's not fair!"

"I know you want to be with your  dad, Blake," I say, "but he's busy. Uncle Pierre is right. He does love you. That's why I'm here. Your dad wanted someone to be with you while he was working so you're happy. I'm here for you, Blake. Always."

Blake wiped away his tears, looking up at me.

"You promise?"

"Promise."

"Pinky promise?" He held out his pinky. My pinky latched onto his.

"Yes. Pinky promise."

Blake gives me a smile, his cheeks still streaked with tears.

"I love you," he whispered, wrapping his arms around my neck. I felt a warm sensation in my chest, and I held tightly onto him.

"I love you too, Blake."
