"Robin!" Megan exclaimed as she tackled the boy, Zatanna and Artemis doing the same as they too saw the boy.
"What is wrong, friend?" Kaldur asked as he noticed the fear-stricken expression on Wally's face and the fact that Robin was wearing Shadow gear.
"I-uh," Wally stuttered as he scrambled for the words to explain what happened.
"What happened?" Artemis demanded as she saw the tension that sat between the two best friends.
"Talia pulled a trump card," Robin said as he backed away from the team nervously.
"What kind of card?" Raquel asked.
"He can't leave until he's 18," Wally said as he stared at the papers again.
"Why not?" Connor crossed his arms.
"A loose end Batman never thought to tie up," Robin said grimly.
"You can't seriously blame him for this can you?" Wally snapped.
"I've been waiting 6 years for him to sign those papers so don't tell me he didn't have time," he pointed angrily at said papers.
"What are those?" Artemis quickly tore them from Wally's grip. "Oh my god... but that means..." Wally took back the papers, as Artemis tried to process the information.
"And now you know what's happening," Robin said as he sat on the bed.
"What is on those papers Artemis?" Kaldur asked the green-clad girl who just stared at Robin with wide eyes.
"She'll need a minute but if you must know they're adoption papers," Robin rubbed his face and ran a hand through his hair.
"But Batman is your father," Megan said confused.
"He was my foster father. He probably always meant to make me his full son but never thought someone would have the balls to go against him and adopt me themselves," Robin shrugged.
"But adoptions require consent from the child if they're old enough," Connor commented. He'd studied it for if Superman ever accepted him.
Robin grimaced, "unless you're being adopted by a family of assassins that has decades worth of connections in the government with the money to back it up. Plus 14 is the lowest age for that so they argued that I wasn't mentally at that maturity from the trauma I got before I was Robin, stupid depression."
"Because if it's the Al Ghul's, they can get whatever they want," Artemis agreed, seemingly finally broken from her thoughts. "Also that's quite the name. No wonder you don't tell people," she gave a snicker at the thought.
Robin stuck out his tongue, "we were an old-fashioned family. Plus I like the older version, less formal." He shrugged with his explanation, not mentioning Richard was his Uncle's name. Was.
"Now this is an interesting sight," a voice purred from the doorway.
"Cheshire!" Artemis drew her bow on her sister.
"Now now there's no need to be hostile. This is our base remember," Chesire scolded playfully as she raised her hands, or rather her free hand. In her other hand, she held a steaming mug. She wasn't wearing her mask so you could see the amusement in her eyes and her shit-eating smirk.
"What are you doing here, Chesire?" Aqualad asked as he stepped protectively in front of the team.
"Why I'm here to greet our new member," Jade smiled as she walked forward without care that she had multiple weapons aimed at her. "I made you hot chocolate," Jade extended the mug out towards the boy still casually sitting on his bed.
Robin took the mug carefully and sniffed it, smiling at the scent. "Home," he breathed happily.
Artemis walked over and sniffed the drink as well, "hot chocolate doesn't smell like that." She pulled away and gave her sister a glare.
"Real hot chocolate does," she smiled and headed back to the door. "Also, your Mother expects you for dinner in half an hour." Jade then frowned when she noticed the mask, "she also said to stop hiding those pretty eyes. Dja devlesa, chíriko," Jade said as she disappeared out the door. Robin nodded without emotion as she sipped he drink, hiding his surprise at the use of his home tongue. Wally noticing too but refraining from saying anything.
"You're not worried about it being poisoned?" Connor asked.
Robin shrugged as he leaned against the pillows, "no. I live here legally now and I outrank her. Plus if they were to try anything I'd be put in the Lazarus Pit."
"You seem very calm about this," Aqualad observed.
Robin grimaced slightly as he looked into his mug, "not that I wanted to join the League of Shadows, but I always did hope to be adopted, legally part of a family so I couldn't be thrown away on a whim. I also already had a good few hours of freaking out and training off the stress." He gulped down more of the drink, mumbling thanks in Romani for the drink to Jade. Wally sent a sympathetic smile. The team stood silently as they realized that it was affecting Robin and how much he was trying to hide his turmoil for their sake. Robin finished his drink and put the cup on his bedside table, getting up off the piece of furniture. "You should probably go," Robin smiled sadly, "and in case Batman can't regain custody, it was a pleasure getting to work with you all." He held out a hand to Aqualad.
"I was a pleasure," Aqualad took his hand and shook it with a warm smile, "we hope that you will join us again soon."
"Hopefully not as enemies," Robin said thoughtfully. He walked over to the dresser and pulled out his folded up suit, "Wally."
"No," Wally said as he looked at the suit with wide eyes.
"He needs someone, Wally, and I'm trusting you to watch him while I'm gone," Robin pushed. "Robin stands for innocence in Gotham, and I won't be the same when I get back. So help him train, please."
Wally nodded sadly and took the suit, "just promise to come back."
"I will, KF, don't worry," Robin smiled as they hugged again. Robin peeled away his mask and added it to the folded pile in Wally's hands when they separated and Dick turned back to the team, "my name is Richard John Grayson by the way. My friends call me Dick. Wally can tell you anything you want to know, he and Roy know me better than almost anyone else." He gave a motion to the speedster at his mention and gave a full smile with his bare blue eyes twinkling, "Now be safe getting out, please."
The team stood shocked at the revelation, minus Wally, as Dick closed the door finally. He slid down the wooden surface and silently sobbed once he heard their footsteps recede. "I'm really gonna miss being your friends," he whispered between sobs.
Well, I haven't updated this in a while... Oops
