Chapter 50

I fell to the ground when the bullet "hit" me in the chest, and I bit back a small groan of pain while I bit the inside of my lip and closed my eyes. My heart pounded hard and fast in my chest, and I stayed still, pretending to be dead.

"You son of a bitch!" someone exclaimed before there was the sound of shuffling from the area where my father stood, and I couldn't help but grow still while my heart pounded harder and faster in my chest when I heard that voice. "Why the fuck did you shoot her?! You killed her!"

Oh for the love of God, I thought and set my jaw while I held back an eye roll and kept still. Why the hell was he back? I thought I told him to stay away...

There was still the sound of some shuffling while they fought for the gun before there were more shouts as more people came toward the fighting pair, and I couldn't help but pray that my father didn't have another bullet in the gun and accidentally hurt someone else, or worse.

There was a loud thunk while something fell to the ground, and I couldn't help but pray that it was either my father or the gun and not the stupid boy that decided to try and play martyr and attempt to save my life.

"The gun is secured!" one of the men exclaimed. "Get off of him, Boy! The rest of you put him into that car, and go to the station!"

"No!" Drew exclaimed, and there was the sound of more shuffling and shouts while Drew tried to get either to my father or to me while he struggled to get away from the people. "Chris! Please! Wake up! Get up!" Sobs broke from his body, and it took all of my self-control not to move.

I didn't move and stayed still. My heart pounded hard and fast in my chest, and I made sure that no one knew that I was still alive and "barely" breathing, even though there were a few people that knew that I would still be alive and well.

The sound of a car door opened and closed filled my ears, and I had a feeling that someone placed my father into the car before the sound of another car door opening and closing filled my ears.

After that, there was the sound of a car being driven off, and I bit back a small sigh of relief while my whole body relaxed because it meant that my father was taken into custody and that I was alive and didn't have to worry about him for now.

"Ms. Prescott?" one of the men asked, biting back a small grunt while Drew tried to get away from him. "It's safe. You can go ahead and open your eyes. You also can get up if you want to. Everything is safe and secured."

The door to the house opened as soon as he said that, and I groaned in annoyance while I set my jaw and moved ever so slightly, just to make sure that everything was working and nothing was injured. "Miss Willis?" the person at the door asked, and I could tell that it was Wally.

"Chris," I said and bit back another groan while I opened my eyes and slowly started to sit up. "When will you stop calling me that?" I asked and raised an eyebrow in question while I looked at him.

Wally bit back a small smile and tucked his head closer to his chest. He didn't say a word, and I could tell that there was a little bit of relief in his eyes while he looked me over, making sure that I was not injured.

"What?" Drew asked from where he was, his voice quivering. He grunted but stopped fighting the men that had him in their arms. "What the fuck? Chris? Are you alive? Are you ok? What happened?"

"Yes, and not injured," I said and nodded in confirmation, biting back a tired sigh. I grabbed Wally's hand when he held it out for me to take, and I stood with his help. "Well, not really injured but still."

I looked toward them and saw that Drew was standing there with two men on either side of him, holding his arms. "Go ahead and let him go," I said and frowned when I saw that there was blood on his face and that his shirt was torn. "I thought I told you to stay away, Andrew."

Drew set jaw and narrowed his eyes, and there were traces of tears down his face while he stared at me. He started to walk toward me, and the others slowly started to walk toward me as well, trailing behind the teenage male. "So that you could have gotten killed?" he asked. "What the fuck was that? What the fuck is all of this about?" He gestured toward the men that were following him and then those that were still hanging around the yard, watching us.

"Favors that I'm owed," I said and shrugged. I walked over to my phone and stopped the recording, knowing full well that the rest of this was not needed. "I didn't need to record the rest of this, right?" I asked and looked at one of the men that were following Drew.

"You don't need to, Ms. Prescott," the man said and shook his head. He cleared his throat and stood taller, putting his hands behind his back. "Do you mind if I take your phone with me?" he asked and raised an eyebrow.

I shook my head and bit the inside of my lip before I tossed him the phone, and he quickly caught it. "Besides Drew appearing out of nowhere when needed, has everything else gone to plan?" I asked and raised an eyebrow in question.

He nodded in confirmation. "Yes, Ms. Prescott. What about you? Were you hit?"

I nodded in confirmation. "It hit the vest, and I am sore because of it, but it hasn't hit anything."

"Vest?" Drew asked and looked between the two of us. He frowned and furrowed his brow while he cocked his head and studied me. "What the fuck happened? What's going on?"

"Bullet proof vest," I said and moved a hand through my hair while I shook my head and pursed my lips in annoyance. "Drew, meet Detective Weinstein and Detective Washington. They were helping me with my "father" because we had this feeling that something like this would happen but didn't know when."

"What?" Drew asked and furrowed his brows with a small frown on his face. A look of confusion washed over his face while he studied me. "What did you think was going to happen?"

"Can we talk about this later?" I asked and shook my head, moving a hand through my hair and across my face. "I think I want to take a shower and then talk things over with Detective Weinstein and Detective Washington privately before I do anything else."

And maybe then take a nap, I mentally added, feeling very exhausted and wanting this day to be done.

"Bu-"

I bit back a tired sigh and shook my head, moving a hand through my hair. "Please, Drew," I said, interrupting him. "I'll explain what I can, but this is bigger than what you think. I have people that I need to take care of and will be affected by this if I don't do this right." I gestured toward Wally, and Drew looked at him before he looked at me. "So, let me talk this over with them and take a shower. After that, I will explain what I can. Ok?"

"I'd take her suggestion, Young Man," Detective Weinstein said, and Drew looked at him before he looked at me again. "You can stay if you want, but let us do what we need to do. If she says for you to not push on something, then do not push. Understood?"

Drew sighed and moved a hand through his hair and across his face. He shook his head and cleared his throat, pressing his lips into a thin line. "Ok," he said. "Then I'll go ahead and take a shower as well."

I breathed a small sigh of relief, and my whole body grew relaxed, grateful that he wasn't going to push. "Ok," I said before I cleared my throat and shifted on my feet and looked at the detectives. "Do you want to take pictures first, or..?"

"Yes," Detective Weinstein said and nodded in confirmation. "We'll take pictures and the rest of your statement before you shower. I would suggest you leave for the evening so that if your mother comes, then you do not have to cross paths with her. Ok?"

I nodded, biting back a tired sigh. "My grandmother is at my apartment, so I will be staying there instead. Wally and the others will watch over the place while we are away."

Detective Weinstein didn't say a word and slowly nodded.

I cleared my throat and shifted on my feet. "Then let's go ahead and get everything done," I said and gestured toward the house. "You may come in."

And with that, we entered the house without another word, silently praying that nothing like this would ever happen again because I had no idea what would happen if it did...
