Chapter 23

AMBER'S POINT OF VIEW

They walked in a comfortable silence for once, not really minding not talking to each other. It gave Amber time to think of her wolf form. What she would give to transform and flash to the house within minutes, but that's just another testament of her being different.

We'll just have to suck it up and walk for several more hours. I don't need another instant where a werewolf screamed and ran away from me.

You guys were eight! Let it go!

Age has nothing to do with it, it still hurts.

"Hey, what should we do to pass time? Several hours of silence is dangerous for my thoughts, then I start thinking about my family and nightmares...and now mentioning it, I'm thinking about it now, so let's do something." Knight suddenly spoke out, moving to walk beside Amber.

"I don't know, it's times like this where I wish I had a book to read..."

"It's time like this where I wish I could teleport." He joked making Amber smile a bit.

"That would be nice." She commented.

"Or I wish I could fly, but that would probably classify me as a vampire." Just the word vampire, especially when he says it, frightens her, but she forces herself to calm down when she detected the humor in the tone.

He's not close to finding out anything any time soon, stop overreacting.

"It may have been a good thing, maybe you could have fooled other vampires." She teased, receiving a laugh from his end.

"I don't know, someone told me I smell like wet dog..."

"You do smell like wet dog." She answered before she could think about it. He raised his brows at her, but he was clearly amused at it. "Hey, I've been told that too, so that's why I said you smell like one because all werewolves smell like it." She quickly added nervously, confusing Knight even more.

"Well, I also heard we smell like grass as well." He mused, looking over at Amber to see if he got that right.

"Yeah, you smell like wet dog, grass, and a bit of dirt." She answered, receiving an immediate question from Knight.

"How is your sense of smell so strong?"

Oh no, I think I pushed it too far...

You think?!

"Natural borns have just as strong sense of smell as vampires does." She lied, trying to make it sound like a sure fact.

"Okay, let's talk about something else because frankly, I don't like talking about my smell, it's disgusting! Wet dog is like the worst smell to have!" Knight exclaimed suddenly and dramatically.

Is it just me or is it whenever we talk about natural borns he changes the subject?

Probably just me.

"Well, the grass and dirt part, at least, isn't that bad..."

"Hey at least we don't smell like blood! Ugh, I hate being in a vampire's presence, their smell makes my stomach uneasy." He shivered at the thought of it.

"I agree, it's the worst smell I've ever came across, and that's saying something." She answered.

A comfortable silence grew between them again, and it's hard to imagine that eighteen minutes ago, she was completely ignoring him, but now she doesn't mind his company.

"Hey Amber, I just want to say I'm really really sorry about earlier. I feel terrible. I've been beating myself about it all day...what I did wasn't right, and I completely understand if you don't trust me, I just hope you can forgive me." He suddenly apologized, bring back the painful memory.

And just like that, I'm thinking about it.

She stayed silent for a while, and Knight got the idea and hung back for a while, giving her the space that she needed.

I guess he's sorry... He was just curious, I'm guilty of being curious all the time.

Yes, but he tried to use you! That's one you're not guilty of. You were his personal guinea pig.

That's true too...

There's no debating, he tried to use you and he tried to figure out what you are...

I don't think that's it though. Thinking it over, I've been pretty careful and I think I haven't given anything away that I'm a vampire...I think it literally was based on curiosity.

And that's why he wanted to race you and compare you with his speed? If you actually did and creamed him, then he would have known you're different.

But I didn't go through with it.

Stop giving him the get-out-of-jail-free card!

Then you give me a reason not too! Because right now, thinking it over, my reaction was silly. He didn't suggest the lesson to figure out what I am, in his eyes, I'm a natural born just like him. He sees me as one of his own, so I better keep it that way because he can't find out the truth!

Do you even hear yourself?!! You can't trust him!!!

I never said I trusted him, I just don't want to have any grudges against him when he did nothing wrong.

Oh yeah, why don't you ask him his motives, I bet you a hundred percent it was to see if you're just as fast as a vampire.

I doubt it but fine, I'll do it if it gets you to shut up. You're starting to give me a headache.

"What was your motives? Was it to see if I was as fast as a vampire? Be honest." She asked him, listening and satisfying her vampire self for once.

He stopped and hesitated for several long moments. Suddenly, he nod. "Yes, it was. You were the fastest werewolf I've seen yet. If you could actually reach the speed of a vampire I thought..."

He left the sentence hanging making Amber walk back to him, grab his shoulders, and start shaking him, not in an angry manner. "You thought what?" She asked rush and anxious, scared to hear what he would say next.

He looks her right in the eyes, almost looking ashamed of what he's going to say. "I thought we might have a chance against them."

She backed away from him, letting go of her hold on him. "What?" She asked stunned, completely ignoring her vampire side who's going berserk at the moment.

That's definitely not what she expected him to say.

See I told you it was to compare you to a vampire!

Suddenly his eyes flash intense pale gold, looking furious. "They're faster, heal faster, fly, and stronger than werewolves, how is that fair?

"I get it, life isn't fair, but vampires are getting stronger every passing second, and werewolves are running away. I've heard a vampire talk about a colony of werewolves in Follcerry moved out to an unknown place, probably forbidden, probably the Americas...and of course I was caught and they tried to track me down, I ended up having to kill...

"Back to what I was saying, the fact is there's going to be a lot more vampires than werewolves soon and I thought if you were just as fast, or may be even faster that gives us some chance of survival. If we can match their pace, we can fight faster too." He rushed fiercely, making Amber take several steps away from him.

All this caught her off guard. One, she never seen him this furious, two, she never seen him talk so passionately about something before, and three, she never knew he knew something about vampires and werewolves that she didn't know.

She didn't know a colony of werewolves have gone to hiding somewhere forbidden, that's just as much as a risk for them as it is for the people already there.

She would have questioned it, but something tells her he's right. Vampires are growing stronger and bigger in numbers, while werewolves are growing weaker and powerless.

"We have to do something!" She exclaimed, pacing back and forth.

"Like what?" He asked incredulous.

"I don't know, but this isn't acceptable! If we don't do anything their going to take over, and we're," she motioned between them, "going to be extinct along with every single werewolf. Humans would be doomed."

"Okay, now we're getting somewhere. Vampires listen to one person and one person only, and who is that?" He asked in anticipation.

"The Headmaster?" She answered, confused at the sudden change in topic.

"Exactly!" He practically shouted.

"'Exactly' what?" She asked still not getting where he's going with this.

"Ugh, Amber you're giving me a headache." He pressed his fingers to his temple. "If we can kill the Headmaster..."

"Vampires will practically be defeated! They only ever listen to their leader, no one would step up to defy him and even when he's gone, I still doubt any of them would step up. They'll probably be confused and lost and that would be our moment to attack!"

"Exactly!" Knight agreed just as anxious and excited as Amber.

"But it's going to be hard, practically impossible to get to The Headmaster. He only sends his servants to do his work, I only ever seen him once, but that was when I was in Middle School."

"But you seen him before. You will recognize him..."

"Yes, but as much I would love to be partners and all." She said with a bit of sarcasm. Knight crossed his arms and gave her a pointed glare for a response. "We're two against hundred of thousands of vampires, we can't do it alone..."

"Who says we have too? We find recruits..."

"How are we going to do that? I know no one, well, besides you I guess." She interrupted, finding the flaw to his plan.

"You're right, but maybe if we kill The Headmaster, that would give other werewolves around the world a chance to come out and fight again. I know it's based on a low maybe, but I'm willing to do it if it means it can, for once, give werewolves the upper hand. Think about it, if we kill The Headmaster that would get werewolves to start fighting again." Knight devised, looking over at Amber only to see her fiercely shake her head.

"You're forgetting the part where I told you I've been trying to track The Headmaster done for years and got no where." She acknowledged, thinking that would kill Knight's determination.

It didn't.

"You're forgetting you have me now." He flashed her his mischievous grin, winking at her. It just made her want to slap him in the face. "With me, we cannot fail! We will not fall, not today, not ever!"

Man, he's arrogant and egoistic.

"Okay, usually you're being partially reasonable, but now you're just acting idiotic." Amber answered, her tone matching her words.

"Come on, let's give it a try. We keep fighting and at some point, I'm sure we'll meet a vampire who's willing to help us..."

"That's stupidest plan I've ever heard, even worse than the recruits idea, at least that dealt with our own kind." She accused, now officially thinking Knight's gone mad.

"Here's what we do, we keep fighting and eventually we'll find a hint as to where The Headmaster is and that would be our moment to attack, but until then, we keep training and we keep fighting." Knight concluded, hoping it will satisfy Amber. "It's not going to be easy, it may take another decade or two, but you said it yourself 'we have to do something!'".

"Fine, I'll agree to that plan, though no doubt it's going to take several several years, but you're right we can't be one of those werewolves who runs and hide, I refuse to do that." She agreed, receiving a smile from Knight's end.

"You're the best of the best..."

"I know darling, I know." Amber immediately answered, soaking in the compliment. "The only problem is that I'm gonna have to deal with you on a daily basis."

He nudged her shoulder, but she shrugged it off. "I'm not kidding."

"Sadly, I know, and I feel the same way, but as long as we can tolerate each other, we'll be great partners." Knight answered, unenthusiastically.

"I can barely tolerate you, but I guess that's still tolerating." Amber responded. She paused for a moment, before enthusiastically shouting "let's fight!"

She never thought she would hear herself say those two words. Her words were followed by Knight cheers into the night.
