Chapter 24

KNIGHT'S POINT OF VIEW

"Ugh, this is so annoying! When are we going to use actual swords?" Amber growled as she seized the wooden sword from Knight's grasp and stomped over to the other side of the room.

"When you actually start fighting back and hitting me, Amber!" He shouted back just as frustrated. "You're still not winning any of these battles and I'm not even going hard on you! The rules are simple, aim for the heart and chest and any other organ that causes death to win. If hit on your arm or hand, switch to the other hand, it's not hard! I've even took out the rule of hopping on your foot if you get striked there."

"Oh yeah, it's easy for you to say since I'm being forced to use my non-dominant hand!" She shot back, getting into her battle stance. He subconsciously goes to his.

"Trust me, sometime in the future you'll thank me for that..."

"Yeah, well, that must be very far into the future because right now 'thank you' is far from what's on my mind." She rolled her eyes, but kept her eyes steadily on his.

"Oh yeah, and what exactly are you thinking about?" He teased.

"Nothing pleasant." She answered, charging at him.

Again, he struck her in the heart, an instant lost. "Let's just keep practicing." He said just as drained as she is.
...........

"Wow, twenty times in a row. I'm on a winning streak." Knight said uninterested and frustrated. He walks over to Amber, unfased by the glare Amber sent him.

"How can I beat someone who's several inches more taller than me?" She shouted frustrated.

That's random...

"What? You do it all the time with vam..."

"That's different..."

"How so?" Knight quickly interjected, hovering over her.

"It just is," she exasperated, brushing off his extended hand, getting off the floor herself.

Knight rolls his eyes. "You're right it is different." Knight said, throwing down her sword.

Ugh, I'm tired of this attitude! She's killing me!

"Fighting with vampires is going to be harder, and believe it or not, I'm going easy on you, but they won't be. I need you to get your head in the game!" He finished, before quickly watching her grab her sword. He blocks her blow, giving one of his own.

The wooden sword piercing her rib cage. He twirled his sword. "See what I mean? It's too easy. You would have died if these were real swords..."

"And if I were human, which I'm not." Amber spat.

"You can't always rely on your healing powers. It shouldn't even have to come to that." Knight said getting into his battle stance he's so tired of.

"I know that! Why do you think I'm getting help from you?" She asked, throwing her hands up the air, annoyance laced in her tone. This only made Knight laugh at her.

"To be completely honest, I just thought it was because you were desper...ow!" He laughed harder as her wooden sword came down on his shoulder. Not even flinching as it does.

Thank goodness that wasn't a real sword, something tells me she wouldn't mind if it was a real one.

Please, she would have preferred it.

"Just shut up and get back to battle stance." She snapped, grabbing her sword and holding her sword up in front of her, glaring her opponent down.

"Yes, sir!" He mocked, mimicking a hand salute. He places his sword in front of him, a smug grin still on his face.

Suddenly, she stops moving. He watches her bewildered as to why she would even close her eyes still not moving from her battle stance. "Wow, she's either concentrating really hard or she has to go to the bathroom, but doesn't want to admit it." He spoke softly to himself, but loud enough for her to hear. She didn't move a finger, just stood there, eyes closed and still.

He swiftly crept to her with making little movement as possible preparing to win the battle again.

Yay, me I get to win again...

Okay, now I know she's not trying anymore.

She lifted up her sword. He felt the swords cling together, but before he could doing anything, she twisted her sword around his, causing him to lose his grip on it. She opens her amber eyes then, stabbing Knight in the chest.

"I won? I WON!!!!!!!!!!!! IN YOUR FACE KNIGHT! I WON!" She sang, doing her crazy victory dance of the sprinklers. Probably a dance move no one's used in decades or should use.

Knight forces a laugh as he just rolls his eyes at her, heading towards his sword. "Only one out of hundred, but okay..."

He stops moving once he saw his sword, not even believing his own eyes.

Maybe four weeks without sleep has finally got to me and I'm seeing things.

Werewolves don't hallucinate, but I may believe it for this moment.

Only it's real, what I'm seeing is real.

"It's a start of a winning streak." She shouted triumphantly, as if she's trying to compete with his thoughts.

Her smile disappeared as she looked over at Knight's sword shattered in thousands of pieces. Knight sits and picks up some of the pieces before dropping them and heading over to the other wooden swords.

"Knight," she said more seriously the smile gone. He stopped in his tracks, turning around to face her. "How did your sword... I mean it's in pieces!" She finished just as astonished, looking briefly at him before looking back at his sword.

"I should be asking you that, you're the one that did it." He accused. She looked back over to him, who's staring intensely at her, as if that will tell him how she did it.

"Huh, maybe it's my werewolf strength...I mean werewolves are very strong." Amber concluded, flexing her arms playfully.

"Amber, how could you do it with your eyes closed? I can barely fight with them open, let alone closed. Not to mention, you can't fight at all with eyes opened...it doesn't make sense!" He said not exactly fascinated.

"What can I say, I'm just that good." She joked, but stopped when she saw the seriousness in his eyes. "I don't know, I can't describe it. I didn't even hear you coming, and that's saying something when a werewolf says that. Probably because my thoughts were too loud, I mean I was thinking a lot during the moment, mostly of how much I wanted to win." She admitted. "I just...trusted my gut feeling: instinct. That's really all to it."

That can't possibly be all...she's hiding something, and I have a feeling it has something to do with this.

"It could be seen as a threat, Amber. I would use it to your advantage." Knight said giving his small smile at her as he went over to grab another sword, leaving Amber there astonished.

"I can't believe it, did Knight, whatever your last name is, just compliment me?" She asked, placing a hand on her heart. "I'm so touched." She couldn't even finished that sentence without burst out laughing.

Probably because of the look I gave her.

Yeah, this isn't a laughing manner though, it's either she doesn't think it's a big deal, or the laughing, the joking around is all an act.

"If you want to call it that, go right ahead, but that's not how I meant it." He said with his new wooden sword, walking back towards her.

"What did you mean by it then?" She asked purely out of curiosity. No annoyance or frustration in her voice.

"What I mean is you're already seen as a threat for reasons I can't possibly know. But somehow you were able to pull off that stunt that came out of nowhere? It's either you have a natural talent for sword combat, which I find very hard to believe since you were terrible." He finished, by the look on her face, he could tell Amber already didn't like what he's implying.

"Or?" She asked, but something tells Knight that she already knows.

Of course she does.

"Or there's more to you than what meets the eyes." Knight responded flatly.

She didn't respond, neither did she look over at him when she puts away her sword.

"We can end practice now..."

"Can't you just be happy for me, for once!?" She suddenly burst out, catching Knight off guard.

"What?" He replied, bewildered.

"I finally win, finally, and you...you're such a jerk." She answered outraged. She actually paces back and forth with the wooden sword in her hand, fiercely swinging it around.

After a full minute, she sits down furious. Knight walks up to her.

"Well I'm sorry if I have to be a little cautious, it's not like we share secrets with each other." Knight shot back using the same tone.

"And I'm not saying we should...it just would be nice, I mean I've been training with you for a month, and I haven't won one, that was my first victory and yet, I still get punished for something." She spoke softer, her tone still mad.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to take away your victory from you or make you sad..."

"I'm not sad." She added sourly, but Knight knows what he saw.

"Either way, I'm sorry, that was wrong of me to do, I really am amazed at how you did it, regardless if I didn't know how you did it. It's still awesome that you were able to do it with your eyes closed!" He exclaimed, praising her. She raised her brow at him. She takes a deep breath in, a calming mechanism.

"I'm still mad at you, but I'll let it slide." She gave her small smile. "I mean, 'eyes closed!' I guess I just...got to focus even more harder? I'll figure it out, but watch your back because I'm going to be bringing it from now on." She laughed making Knight feel better. He could tell she's still hurt and mad, but she's trying to get over it, so can he.

"Okay, I'll believe it when I see it." He joked, dodging Amber's elbow nudge, but was too slow for the second time around. "As much as I'm enjoying this, I'm already feeling myself slowly changing due to the sun going down. Watch over the house, don't let anyone in! I should be back...early in the morning. The most important thing to remember: my room is off limits!"

"Okay, okay, I got it." Amber quickly answered to please Knight, but he wasn't convinced enough.

"Promise?" He asked holding up his pinky finger.

"This is ridiculous..."

"Just pinky promise me!" He snapped. Reluctantly and eventually, she did.

"Good, now bye." He said, as he rushed down the steps, and ran into the forest.
