Chapter 4
KNIGHT'S POINT OF VIEW
He grabs his music from the teacher and walks over to his seat, not able to make eye contact to anyone. The songs they study he likes to listen and sing too, but he never actually sung it in a group.
He looks at the words, but all he sees is a big blob of mumble jumble words.
What were we even fighting about? Why did it get so out of hand...
I'm done for! I can't control my werewolf side and I can't control my anger.
Well, if it makes you feel better, once you learn how to control your werewolf side, you practically learned how to control your anger as well.
It's been years now. I still haven't learned how to control it, and probably never will.
He listens to the class sing, but doesn't sing himself. It's hard to face the facts, but Knight needs to learn how to control his powers, and if he doesn't, his enemies will overpower him, and he will die.
........
The bell rang, and Knight immediately woke up. He can't decide what's worse, that he actually slept or that the teacher didn't really care if he slept.
He experienced the same nightmare he experienced earlier today, but only he actually died in this one. He's quite surprise that he allowed himself to sleep, knowing that everytime he does, a nightmare follows.
"Amber!" He shouts as he realizes that he's the only one in the classroom, even the teacher is gone.
"Mr. Knight!" A deep harsh voice entered the room. Knight turned around towards the front door that's blocked by this freakishly large man. Dressed in all black, with a clipboard in his right hand. Knight could tell he was a mere mortal, but he's never been so terrified of one until now.
"May I help you?" He asked politely hoping the man would move away from the door so he could make a run for it, he needs to catch up with Amber after all.
"Yes, I heard you were sleeping in class! That behavior is unacceptable..." He paused and started writing on his clipboard.
If it's unacceptable than why did the teacher let me do it?
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to do it. It won't happen again..."
"Oh it better not or we will kick you out if this school." He threatened stomping his foot on the ground. Knight acted casual the whole time, but he was surprised at the man's reaction, not really scared though, running for your life toughens you up.
"And we'll have you start your senior year all over again..."
"Can you really do that? I basically gone through the whole year, and even if you did flunk me, my grades that I got in my other school will be enough to sustain me." Knight said trying to keep his cool, but just the thought of even starting the year all over is not happening.
"When you signed our waiver we reserve the right to flunk you, and if you didn't see that, that's your fault, not mine. I expect you to behave better. Now, good day." He walked out of the room, slamming the door behind him.
Knight took a second to gather himself together and left the room. He thought it was ridiculous how they would and can do that, but right now he needs to explain himself to Amber.
He looks fratically in the hallways, but she's no where to be seen. He runs through the whole parking lot receiving weird looks from all the students, except Amber's.
Great, did she leave?
He runs over to his car, and gets in, buckling his seat belt, and checking his mirrors. He sees the school bus in one of his mirrors. Turning around in his seat, he sees the school bus park right behind him, picking up the kids.
Well, this is why this spot was open, it's right behind the school bus parking.
Could today get any worse?
Out of no where it starts raining cats and dogs. Grateful, that he's in the car, he turns on his window wipers, and starts heading out as soon as the bus leaves.
"It was a rhetorical question!" He shouts accidently hitting his car's horn. Several senior students started shouting angrily at him, but Knight couldn't hear them anyway, so he didn't pay attention to them.
What? I ruin their conversation?
You poor things.
He rolled his eyes, knowing they wouldn't be able to see him. One of them actually went up to his car, as he was backing up, and slammed his car.
Resisting the urge to get out of the car and slap him, Knight just presses his horn harder, shaking the jerk off his car.
Knight's finally on the road, a couple cars behind the school bus, but fortunately the bus was heading the opposite direction from the Sunnyside Main Street, the street that will lead him to the park.
He makes the turn into the park's parking lot after fifteen minutes of driving in the pouring rain. He could hardly believe that it could rain harder than it was before, but it did, to a point you can't see a few feet in front of you when you're driving. Luckily, he was the only car on the road.
From where he's sitting the park is completely deserted. Not a single living thing seem to be there. Debating whether he should get out, he turns off the car engine. "In this rain, I can't see a thing, but that doesn't mean no one's there, maybe Amber's there. On the other hand, who would be out in this weather? Amber may be somewhere I don't even know, under shelter that I didn't know existed. I just moved here a week ago, she knows a lot more places than I do and maybe she's there." He argued with himself in the mirror.
He studies his eyes for a moment trying to get use to having gold eyes instead of brown. For his whole life up until he was thirteen, he had fair skin, black hair, brown eyes, he got use to how he looked, but once he changed, everything stayed the same except his eyes, and it's still throwing him off. Sometimes he would hate those eyes, other times, he just wants to learn more about them, and who he is now.
"Who likes the rain?! Not me." Knight emphasizes looking back out into the rain. He looks up at the sky, the clouds almost pitch black, if he didn't have a clock, he wouldn't have guessed it's only four o'clock in the afternoon.
He hates the feel of the rain on him since the day he was ten, and got pneumonia from staying in the pouring rain for five hours straight, with no cover or umbrellas.
Made up his mind, he grabbed his raincoat, opened the door, and quickly closed it, his floor already soaked. "Snap, I can't go out there." He looks out the window seeing nothing, but the rain and clouds. Some clouds were so low it almost touched the ground. It makes the park look darker, more frightening than it is, making it seem like there's creatures lurking in the shadows waiting for him to come out.
"Okay, for Amber... Please don't be out here." He opens the door, climbs out, and holds up his raincoat having it act as his umbrella. He locks the car, and runs across the parking lot.
Surprised that he didn't trip, he goes onto the grass field. "Ha, I'm not that clum..." He tripped over a slippery rock and face planted into the ground that was filled with grass and mud.
"I'm the clumsiest person on the planet." Knight replied slowly getting up from his spot, using his raincoat to wipe the mud off his face. His head was throbbing, but he kept going ignoring the pain.
....
He's been walking for thirty minutes in cold, harsh rain, soaked and bleeding from the numerous times he's tripped and fell. There's no sign of Amber or anything living at the moment. He tried looking for a stick long enough to be considered a "walking stick", but he could barely see his hand in front of him.
"She better not be out here." He whispered, his body wanting to stop and get warmed up in his car, but as much as he doesn't want it to be true, he knows Amber's out here. He can't exactly understand how he knows, maybe because he knows how stubborn she is and that she wouldn't leave that bench if her life depended on it.
Well, maybe she would if these weather conditions were worse...
Worse? How could it get worse? How could any of this get worse?!
Unexpectedly, a figure came out of the fog. It was hard to tell who it was, but whoever it was, knocked Knight down, putting their foot on his chest. He tried pushing it off, but the figure wouldn't budge pressing down harder.
The figure bends down closely and Knight finally sees a face. Amber's astonished expression was clear as daylight as she backed away. Knight turns over trying to gasp for air but look at Amber at the same time.
"What are you doing here?" She asked not mad, but not thrilled either. At this point, their both soaked head to toe, but Knight knows she's been in the rain longer. Her bench has no cover, even the park's restroom has holes all over the ceiling, either way Amber would get soaked.
"Amber, I'm so so sorry. I know what I did is unforgivable and out of hand, and I'm truly, truly, sorry..."
"It was very unexpected, I will admit..."
"I know and I'm truly truly truly deeply sorry. Words can't express how sorry I am for what I did to you. The truth is...I don't exactly know how to control my anger or powers. Do you know what it's like to be scared of your powers? To know that at any given moment you could snap and be a completely different person. Unrecognizable." Knight replied. Amber's facial expression was filled with surprise, horror, fright, and anger all in one.
"Actually I do. It's what keeps you up at night, it's what scares you more than anything, it's what makes you different, a target!" She ended harshly clenching both hands into fists. Knight was shocked for a moment his face clearly showing it. He never thought Amber had to deal with that as well.
A few moments later she unclenches her fists and walks over to her bench, sitting down. Knight follows, but doesn't sit down next to her. It's still raining and he needs to find some way to get Amber out of this rain and now up from that bench.
"I have to ask...I have to make sure. Knight, you are a natural born right?" She asked unsure, her face expressionless. She stares at the cold hard ground not looking up at Knight. At all.
"Yes, but my parents never taught me how to control my powers." He said sourly, kind of mad that she asked. He wasn't mad much about her asking compared to him not knowing how to control.
A semi-werewolf isn't that much different from a natural born you know...
Actually they are. For starters, they know how to control their powers.
Wait, Amber said she knew what it's like...is she a semi-werewolf?
No she's a natural born. She probably said that because she knows what it is like. She experienced learning how to control her powers when she was a child.
I don't know...I'm just saying there's a big difference between the two groups of werewolves when maybe, there shouldn't be.
Is natural born always going to be better than semi?
For now...yeah.
"KNIGHT!" Amber shouts finally gaining Knight's attention. "You okay? You spaced out on me." She asked sincerely, not tearing her gaze from his. She looks down at her feet gluing her hands together. "I'm sorry that I sneaked attacked you...and I didn't mean to question...I was just curious."
"You have nothing to be sorry for, trust me, I would've done the same, especially in this weather, you don't know what's out here. I could've have been a vampire. And for the question you were just double checking." Knight responded squinting his eyes, barely able to see Amber now. He doesn't know how, but it started pouring harder since Amber found him.
And here I thought it couldn't get any worse.
Lightning flashes across the sky, the bolts dancing viciously towards the ground, trying to reach it. The lightning was about forty feet away from hitting them.
Why do I always jinx it? The rain either pours harder or something happens.
I mean seriously, how is it getting worse?
Stop thinking, stop jinxing.
"Amber, we need to go..."
"I'm not scared of a little lightning and rain." She scoffs. Knight stood there a moment trying to see her facial expression to see if she's actually serious, but he can't even see her.
"'A little'? Amber I can't even see you! And your only inches away from me. The rain's so strong it's starting hurt everytime it makes contact with my skin. Not to mention, the lightning almost hit the ground, and no offense, your bench is metal, you'll get fried!" Knight debates, knowing he's clearly right. He grabs her hand, and starts walking back up towards the hill to his car, but her hand slips out.
"And where do I go Knight?! I have no where..."
"You can come with me, and stay at my house until the weather dials down." He looks at her, barely able to see her, but clearly seeing the debate going on in her head. "You can do whatever you want Amber, I don't care, but if you stay out here a minute longer, you're going to get sick, and you'll be vulnerable to those vampires trying to kidnap you and I can promise you that they will not take care of you when you're sick..."
"And what? You will?!"
"Yes! I'll do what I can to help you, I promise, but we need to go now." Lightning flashes across the sky again, and from their view point it's getting closer to the ground and from where they're standing. They're soaked, cold, and about to be dead soon if they don't leave. The storm's only getting stronger.
"Um, I don't...okay, I'll go." Without hesitation, Knight took Amber's hand and dragged her behind him back up this hill. He was trying not to, but he was shaking all over.
Is this me?
You don't control the weather...
Yes, but my power is lightning...
Yes, you're right, your power is lightning, but you could only shoot it out of your hands, not have it come out from the sky!
Well, sorry for being concerned.
Knight's still nervous seeing the lightning, but relaxes a bit now that he knows it's not caused by him. Amber seems fine, she hasn't let go of his hand yet so she's still with him.
Somewhere along the way he lost his raincoat, but he's not going back to look for it. He looks behind him occasionally seeing Amber there looking down at the ground. He can't tell if she's sad or not, but definitely not happy.
Well, this is going to be interesting.
