      "Keep you in the dark.
       You know they all pretend."

              - The Foo Fighters, The Pretender

"I'm falling for you day by day, Anna, and I still haven't figured out if you're a mistake or not." I stated, throwing my hands in the air.

"And what if I am a mistake, Lucas, what do you do then?"

"Well I'm not the one getting heartbroken in the end."

      "Neither am I."

"Then let's just not do this then. It'll cause too much trouble."

"So you don't wanna fight for it?" she muttered, looking down at her hands. She twirled a piece of string from her shirt around her finger as a tear fell from her cheek.

In that moment, I was speechless. I was staring a girl who was falling to pieces right before my eyes, all because of me. I knew it was stupid to even try with her, I knew something like this would happen. It always does.

"I understand." she looked up and her lips quivered as she bit her tongue. "And I guess you found out you're answer." Anna looked back down to her hands and watched as the string dropped from her hand. "You know, there's always been hints around me telling me that this, us, wouldn't work out. A flower stem snapped and it was beautiful. The man chasing us today, he was a warning. I just want you to know that I'll fight for us until these feelings vanish and I have a big feeling they never will." Anna stuffed her hands into her pants pockets and looked me straight in the eyes. "Bye Lucas."

And with that she spun herself around. The squeak of her wet shoes echoed through the house. Whimpers from both of us left our bodies.

What the hell am I doing?

Go fight for her you idiot!

I ran down the hall where her shadow stretched and grabbed her waist. Spinning her around, I pulled her closer to me and pressed my lips on to hers. It was longer then the one before, and it had a lot more meaning to it.

We both smiled as we pulled away, and boy let me tell you, I've never felt so proud of myself before. This definitely beat the time when I caught my first fish.

"What made you change your mind?"

      "You."

I felt bad the early morning afterwards. She had stay long later then what she was supposed to. And I had no idea what I had getting us into. A relationship with a girl who's going to be as successful as ever in the future and a boy who does nothing but screw up. She was excited and happy, but I, on the other hand, was nervous and had never been in a 'relationship' before. I slept around, gave what the girls wanted and achieved what I needed, but with Anna, it was so strange.

The kiss that happened yesterday was one thing I would never regret, to be honest. The way her finger tips lingered on the back of my neck, her lips sweet and soft. It was like I was being buried under a full moon, it watched me slowly fall into peace as it knew my deepest darkest secrets. To top it off, the moon was smiling, Anna. But I was still awfully confused on if I should be happy or not.

And I can tell, by the way she has been around Matilda, that she wants to go to the dance that's tomorrow, you know, Spring Formal. The thing about that is I don't go to school dances, I smoke cigarettes and drink to forget about the hell hole.

The school bell rung, indicating it was time for the end of the day. I speed walked to my locker and pushed everything into my locker. I grabbed my board out of my locker and  as I went to shut it, Matilda tapped my shoulder. I furrowed my eyebrows and looked down at her, not remembering her being that short.

"Do you know why Anna wasn't at school?" she asked, scrunching up her nose. I bit the inside of my cheek, having it feel like taffy.

"No, I didn't even know she was absent today." I answered honestly, beginning to walk along side with Matilda. She looked confused and curious at the same time as she tapped her pencil at her chin.

     "Are you sure?"

"Positive." I said. "Why are you even asking me?"

"Well I know you have a bad repetition and she's been hanging out with you an awful lot, so I was just wondering." she smirked, walking in front of me and heading in the opposite direction as me. I shrugged it off and placed my board down on to the ground.

I skated for about ten minutes until I ended up at her place. I climbed up the giant hill and knocked on the door, but with this, I knew I was going to regret it.

"Who are you?" the tall, bulky man -- about 6'3 -- asked, wiping his hands off on the table.

"Oh, I'm partners with Anna for a group project and she texted me--"

"How did she text you if she doesn't have a phone?"

"No, no sir. She texted me from Maddie's."

"Were you the one she was hanging out with yesterday?"

"Yesterday? I don't recall anything dealing with her besides the text message."

"Mhm." he hummed looking down at his hands. Wiping off some type of grease or oil. "Well she's grounded and there is no one allowed up in her room at the time."

"But sir, you need to understand that the project is due by to--"

"I used to be one you of you guys ya know." he interrupted me. I scrunched my face up in confusion and he threw the small towel on his shoulder. "Sneaking around, getting in girls pants. You know what happened two years of doing it? I got the one in this house. Anna. And I don't know if you knew that, but babies are the ones who ruin it for you, so keep it in your pants."

      "No sir, you're misunderstood."

"Bye." He waved, closing the door in front of my face. I looked around me, shocked at how her dad was utterly protective of her.

I walked to the side of the building and began to climb the decorating on the side of the building. Rose vines tangled themselves up and buds were beginning to grow on the thin stems. I slowly stepped on the roof, hoping it wouldn't make any noise indicating that I was about to get shot in the near future.

Walking over to the last window, I found Anna sitting on the booth connected to the window. I smiled at her as her eyes got bigger. I motioned for her lift the window pane and as she did, she began to shout but at the same time whisper to me.

"What the hell are you doing here!" she exclaimed, throwing her hands to the side.

"Well, I heard you weren't at school."

"Because this morning, my mother and father had a long talk with me."

    "Ooh, that kinda of talk."

"Yeah, thanks to you!" she frowned at me. I rolled my eyes and let out a soft chuckle before speaking again.

"Well, I had to try to convince your dad we're partners in a project." I smirked as she tossed her own roll eye at me.

"That's the stupidest thing you could ever use. Especially on my dad."

"Yeah, he doesn't seem to like me much."

"It's the lip piercing and all black." she said, leaning her head on to her hand. "What you come here for anyways?"

"I was wondering if you wanted to go to the Spring Formal tomorrow?"

      "As your date?"

"No, as my pet mouse." I sarcastically said. "Yes, my date."

"I don't have anything to wear."

"I bet you look fine in anything. Hell, wear skinny jeans if you want to!"

"Yeah, because I wanna look like a dumb ass with you."

       "Skinny jeans are cool."

"But they aren't punk rock, Mr. Hemmings." she smiled. "But I would love to."

       "Good."

"But, I have something to ask you?"

       "Yeah?"

       "Do you really like me?"

"Let's just say, you're something special."
