Chapter 24

Charles and Arsenal managed to bring the crate into the dropship as Athena began to pilot it back to base.

"Thanks again Charles. I didn't think I would be able hold them off." Aaron said. "You're welcome man, we heroes look out for each other." Charles said patting him on the shoulder. Arsenal nodded before glancing at Julie who stood next to the ramp as the clouds went by.

"Hey, you sure about her?" He asked nudging his shoulder. "My mom? Yeah she's fine Aaron. Don't get too worked up about it." Charles said with a nod. Arsenal sat on a couch available as he stared at Julie. He remembered Barnes, inches from death and the one to do it was standing in the very same dropship.

"We're almost back to base." Charles informed the two. Aaron nodded as he stood up and walked to the crate. He kept shooting glances at Julie, expecting her to go back to her old ways and try to finish the job she started those many years ago. The dropship landed in the hangar as Aaron and Charles brought the crate out.

"I'll go report to Jack and Ana." Julie said rushing off. "Are you sure about her?" Aaron asked again.

"Yes I'm sure Aaron. She's my mother. If anyone can get through the brainwashing, it's her and my father." Charles assured him. Arsenal sighed as the two carried the crate towards the command center. Hana and Lucio ran up to them and stared at the crate.

"What's in the box?" Hana asked. "Tech that shouldn't be in Talon's hands." Arsenal said. Hana looked at him as she studied his face.

"You seem familiar. From my days as a MEKA pilot for the Korean Army. I think you and other people." Hana said putting a hand on her chin.

"Yeah, I think I saw you when I started the revolt against the Vishkar corporation. I think you were helping us." Lucio said. Aaron looked at Charles for help.

"Everything will be explained all in due time, don't you have training to do?" Charles asked the two. Lucio and Hana nodded before turning and leaving.

"Thanks." "No problem, now let's get this hunk of wood to the center. I know Winston is dying to examine it." Charles joked. As the two squeezed passed agents, Aaron noticed how some would say hello or poke Charles. Tracer blinked over to him and kissed Charles's cheek before he swatted her away. She stopped and stared at Aaron.

"Oh, my, god, MANHATTAN!" She yelled before tackling him in a hug, making him drop the case. "Hey, hey, hey, easy Lena! This is delicate tech in here!" Charles said. Lena blinked up and helped Aaron back on his feet.

"Sorry luv, it's just been too long. I can see you're no longer that scrawny man we dug through the rocks. Look at you, all grown up and more serious than ever." Lena said smiling at him.

"It's nice to see you too Ms. Oxton, and the name is Aaron. 'Manhattan' is only on mission." He replied shooting a smirk at Charles.

"C'mon Romeo, we've got work to do." Charles said making Aaron glare at him. "I'm just kidding, but who knows." He teased.

"Okay, you can do this yourself." Aaron said walking away. "C'mon Richards, it was a joke! I'm only kidding." Charles called after him.

"You are so lucky I don't have a weapon that can beat you." Aaron growled. "Oh come now darling, tis just a joke." Charles said in a British accent. Aaron rolled his eyes as they enter the command center to see Julie and David talking as Jack, Ana, and Winston looked over the maps.

"Ah, Charlie, glad to see you make it back and I see you've made a friend." Jack said looking at Aaron.

"You already know who I am, so it's no point in introducing myself."  Aaron said. "It's good to see you're still alive Aaron." Ana said.

"Captain Amari." He said with a nod. "Oh please, it's just 'Ana'. Besides, you joining Overwatch could make us even." She said patting his shoulder.

"What do you mean by 'even'?" Arsenal asked. "Well, I was the one that helped you and your squad back in the forest. I thought I would be the one to forget it. didn't know you youngins would be the forgetful ones." She said with a smile. Her eye shining with amusement.

"You, you were 'Ghost'. That would explain the Nano boost you gave Apollo." Aaron said as a smile replaced his puzzled look.

"Oh aye, I do apologize David but he did do a number on you." Ana said looking at David. The fire elemental raised an eyebrow at her.

"Nevermind, Charles, we managed to track down the Talon ship that abducted Angela. We pinpointed the location somewhere in the Sahara desert." Jack said showing an overview of sand everywhere.

"I hate sand, it get's everywhere." Arsenal muttered. Charles looked at the map as it showed real time of Talon goons and scientists walking about.

"Let's lay some hurt on these bastards." Charles's voice growled. "Hold on hothead, we need a plan of attack. We can't just go in head first. Be strategic and think." Aaron said.

"That is kind of Charles's speciality, running headlong into danger because he has a near indestructible demon in him." David said.

"Athena, what kind of defenses do you think we'll be facing?" Aaron asked. "From my scans, I can see very fortified AA guns. Guards switch after every 6 hours. Minefield around the entrance and guards posted around the walls. They invade-proofed their base of operations. But deep geologic scans show a network of tunnels that lead to various subterranean vehicles. More tunnels than I could calculate where they could go. It looks like on the 3rd level is where they are keeping prisoners, but by my calculation, I believe they are torturing Agent Mercy for the formula to Project Avatar." Athena reported.

"Holy shit, now that's some defense." David said. "By the time we even make a dent in our attack, they'd be long gone by then." Charles said.

"Not entirely Charles, every so often they turn off the defenses to recharge the AA guns as they are solar powered. The only active defenses would be the mines and guards." Athena said.

"So, we could flying in when the guns are down and throw decoys to blow up the mines. We can use the Digi-Struct to create those disposable weapons and throw them at the walls to weaken them just enough for The Rider's and David's fireballs to break open the door. We'd only have a small window. So we'd better make everything count." Arsenal said.

"What about Song's MEKA? We could have her self destruct it and blow a hole in the base. Catch them by surprise." Charles asked.

"No, they would be expecting something like that. That's why they are reinforced to stop a MEKA exploding. Which would not help us with destroying the wall with the disposable weapons." Athena informed them.

"We're back to square one then." Jack said. "No, we continue with the plan. They may be resistant to explosions, but they're not fire resistant." Charles said.

"Yeah, we could combine my fire and your Hellfire. It would make the metal burn and we could have Julie freeze it. Which would allow the MEKA and disposable weapons to shatter it like glass, Charlie you're a genius!" David said grabbing his son in a hug.

"Dad stop it!" Charlie groaned before laughing lightly. "Don't worry son, we'll get her back." David said making Charles look at him.

"I understand Dad." Charles said with a nod. "It's risky, but it just might work." Arsenal said as Athena brought up a simulation.

"This plan would have a 50% chance of success. Are you sure?" The AI asked. "As much as I'll ever be." Charles said. The group nodded as Charles and Aaron left to find Hana.

"So, is working for Overwatch a little bit better than working for the UN?" Charles asked. "I must say, it kind is, no blacked out margins. Just straight forward. I guess being an agent isn't all that bad." He replied with a smile. As the two entered the rec room, Hana could be seen playing against Jennie in a FPS game.

"No fair!" Hana said, glaring at her. "I thought you were going to be a challenge." Jennie said in a mocking tone. Hana growled lightly before sighing, Jennie was the first to notice Charles and Arsenal.

"Oh hey Charlie." She said standing up and walking over to them. Hana followed suit and stood in front of them, she kept glaring at Jennie with crossed arms.

"Hana, we need you for this mission." Charles said. "Alright, let me go freshen up and I'll meet you in the command center." She said before walking away. Jennie rolled her eyes and smirked at the Korean as she left. She then turned her gaze to Arsenal.

"So, the silent weaponsmith returns. It's good to see you again Manhattan." Jennie said with a grin.

"Yeah, I remember Chloe always did say you were a hot head." Aaron said with a small chuckle. "Speaking of Barnes, how is she? I never really got to speak with her except that time you guys were here. When our mom and dad were agents." Jennie asked. Aaron sighed as he looked to the ground.

"I can't say for sure, after the disbandment, The Unit went their separate ways. Lawson still works for the government, I know Atticus is working for the FBI, Apollo went back to Russia in helping defend against the Omnics. But Barnes, I don't know where she went." Aaron replied.

"Well, hopefully she'll resurface and come visit. I honestly miss her, she was a good friend." Jennie said with a grin.

"Yeah, she sure was." Aaron said nodding. "Alright, Jennie we'll be back." Charles said. "Where ya goin?" She asked quizzically.

"We found Angela." Charles replied. "I'm coming to, you are not putting me on the sidelines again!" Jennie said glaring at him.

"I don't want you in danger again, not like last time." Charles said placing his hands on her shoulders.

"Angela is my responsibility too, I'm not going to sit back and let you risk your life for her." Jennie shot back. The three could hear a distinct sound of boots as a man cleared his throat.

"You ain't got nothin to worry bout Charlie, she's safe with me." McCree said in the doorway. Charles turned to see the cowboy tip his hat.

"Fine, but promise me you'll stay by her side." Charles asked him. McCree took off his hat as a sign of respect and placed it on his chest.

"By my honor and my life, I will protect her." McCree promised. "Thank you Jesse." Charles said as he turned and left.

"It'll be nice to fight alongside a familiar face again." McCree said nodding towards Aaron. "Just try to keep up." Aaron said with a smirk. The three left as they walked down the hallway to the command center.

"Alright, does everyone know the plan?" Charles asked. The group nodded in response. Jack, Ana, Tracer, Hana, Aaron, Jennie, David, Julie, and McCree nodded.

"Good, let's roll out." Charles said as the group turned and left for the hangar. "Ready oh fearless leader?" Jennie asked walking next to her brother.

"Dear Sister, I have never been more ready." Charles said smirking at her. Everyone boarded the dropship as Charles and Aaron brought the Digi-Struct on board.

"Alright, this piece of tech is what will create the weapons you'll be using to make a dent into the wall. But we'll need to wait for Fire and Ghost to burn the wall and have Snow freeze it. The cooling of the metal at a fast rate as that should make it vulnerable to explosions from the weapons and D. Va's MEKA. Make your shots count, I know they are pretty much endless, but let's not waste bullets." Aaron said as the Digi-Struct create weapons for the group.

"How does this gun work? I can't find the magazine." Hana said. "You just throw it and it should explode. After that, a new one would appear." Aaron informed her.

"So, like Tediore's guns on Borderlands?" Hana asked. "Yes Hana, just like those." Aaron replied. "Neat." Hana said with a smile. Charles sighed as he watched the clouds pass by.

'I can feel your fear. Calm yourself Charles, we'll find her.' The Rider assured him. Charles nodded.

~Sahara Desert~

"Alright, we hit the 6 hour mark, the AA guns should be down. Focus your fire on the mines and if possible, the guards posted near the AA guns and the walls. Ana, we'll need you far away to provide sniper support while me and Fire heat up the wall." Ghost instructed.

"fahum." Ana replied as the ship landed. The ramp opened as the sniper ran to her designated spot.

"Go, go, go." Jack ordered as the ship ascended and flew towards the base. Charles set his timer for 60 minutes and readied himself. The ramp lowered as him and Fire jumped off the ship and ran towards the entrance. The group in the ship fired at the ground in front of them, triggering explosion after explosion. On occasion they would see a gun before it would explode. Ghost and fire stood in front of the entrance as they began to pour on the heat.

"Almost there, Snow you can come down anytime!" Ghost said in his comms. Jack looked at Julie and nodded as the ice elemental jumped down and ran towards the two fire benders. The wall was red hot as they continued to pour on the fire. Snow appeared next to them and began super cooling it.

"WAIT!" Winston said in the comms causing her to stop. "What is it Winston?" Jack asked. "If you continue with this plan, you'll just make the metal harder to break. Leave it like that and use the MEKA now!" He ordered. Jack looked at the Korean as she nodded.

"Go." He said as D. Va flew out of the ship and launched her suit at the heated metal. Ghost, Fire, and Snow managed to get out of range as the MEKA exploded, leaving a massive hole in the entrance. Ghost could hear the operatives rushing back and forth at the sudden confusion.

"You're the leader, what do you say?" Snow asked. "Destroy everything." Ghost replied as the rest of the agents disembarked and began to fire at the operatives.

~Widowmaker~

"What is going on?" The assassin demanded as the base shook. "Overwatch, they found us!" A grunt replied.

"Merde, evacuate the base, get to the vehicules." She ordered. Reaper stood in the doorway and glanced at her.

"Leave her, she'll die with the rest of them. You'll get your revenge." She said walking past him. He stared at the bonded and bloodied doctor before walking away. Angela's eyes opened to see her captors no where in sight.

"W-what the?" She wondered as she tried to break her bonds. "Damn, metal. If only it were rope." She said looking around for anything. A shimmer appeared in front of her as the hacker Sombra appeared.

"What do you want? Another glob of blood on your dress?" Angela scowled. "No, I'm here to get you out of here. I never signed up for this if torturing was a thing. I'll set you free, but you're on your own. Goto the right and take the stairs, you should make your way out of here." Sombra instructed her as she released Angela from her bonds. Angela collapsed and began to rub her sore wrists. She went to thank her but glanced up only to see emptiness. Shaking off the weariness, Angela stood up and found her Valykrie suit on a table in pieces.

"Trying to duplicate this now then." Angela smirked as she placed it on. She placed her wings on and flexed them to test the gliding feature. She noticed a pistol and grabbed it.

"I hate doing this, but it must be done." She said walking out of the room, using the wall as a support to balance herself. The hallway was deserted as the alarms blared.

"C'mon Angela, keep going." She scolded herself. As she made it to the stairs, she noticed grunts running down stairs. One looked at her before she raised her gun and fired a round into each skull. Disgusted, she tossed the pistol to the side and continued to walk upwards. She saw the glint of the sun, the ball of warmth that kept their planet cool just a little upwards.

"C'mon!" She heard a voice from outside. She managed to climb a few steps before collapsing from the constant torture she had to endure. Wearily, she crawled her way to the second level and stayed there.

"Charlie." She called out weakly before collapsing.

~Charles~

Ghost fired his weapon at any remained grunt before tossing it away. "The entrance should be down this door." Athena informed him as a heads-up display appeared and showed a waypoint.

"I found the entrance, keep me covered!" He said in his comms. He vaulted over a barricade and gunned down any grunt that carelessly stood in his way. A shot could be heard as a grunt next to him fell dead.

"I've got you covered Ghost, just find her." Ana said. Ghost nodded and opened the door to see Angela, unconscious on the 2nd level.

"Angela!" He said running down the stairs and kneeling next to her. The doctor coughed lightly before opening her eyes.

"Charles?" She asked placing a hand on his cheek. "Yes, it's me. I'm here." He said as tears cascaded down his cheeks.

"My Shining Rider, has come to save his angel." She said laughing lightly before a coughing fit ensured.

"Easy now Angi, let's get you out of here." Charles said picking her up bridal style as her head rested comfortably on his chest. Charles exited the base as the ground littered with exploded crates, bodies, and bullets. The agents regroup and nodded before an alarm rang.

"They're going to blow the base, double time it. LET'S MOVE!" Arsenal shouted as they ran for the dropship. The ground rumbled as the tunnels collapsed and the base began to explode. Once in the ship, Athena piloted it towards Ana's position as the agent ran swiftly and jumped onto the waiting ramp. Hana helped her up as the ship zoomed away, leaving the Talon base to explode.

"Did you find her?" Ana asked looking at Aaron. The weaponsmith turned to show Charles sitting on the couch, holding Angela close.

"Thank god." She said with a smile.

~Talon~

"I regret to inform you that we lost the Sahara base." Widowmaker said. "It's all right, at least we know the formula." A man spoke.

"Yes, after some harsher methods, the Doctor finally broke. We've sent the formula to our research divison. As we speak, they are manufacturing the serum right now." Widowmaker said.

"Good, Project Avatar is back on schedule. Now then, you three get some rest. You've earned it." The man said before the screen went black. Widowmaker retreated to her room as Reaper went to his room. Sombra sat down and sighed.

"This is not what I signed up for." She said.

~Watchpoint Gibraltar~

"How's she holding up?" Julie asked. "She's stable for now, nothing but bed rest and food for the next few weeks." Ana replied. Julie nodded as she looked through the window to see Charles feeding Angela.

"They do make a cute couple." Ana said. Julie laughed lightly and nodded. Angela laughed lightly as Charles made airplane noises and moved the spoon towards her mouth.

"Charlie, why do you have to be so darn adorable?" Angela asked after swallowing her food. "Only for you my dear." Charles said with a grin. The two laughed lightly before Charles cleared his throat.

"Someone would like to apologize to you." He said making her raise an eyebrow. "Doctor Angela Ziegler." The Rider spoke.

"Yes?" She asked hesitantly. "I would like to apologize for my behavior towards you in the past. If I hadn't snap at you, you wouldn't be in this predicament." The Rider said. Before he could continue, Angela placed a finger on his lips and shushed him.

"I understand, I was in the wrong to belittle you like that. I hope you can forgive me." She said. "I do, thank you." The Rider said before Charles coughed lightly.

"Forgot when he talks it still makes my throat itchy." Charles said with a smile. Angela pushed her food tray away and opened her arms for Charles. He sat on the bed as Angelapulled him down and rested her head on his chest. She yawned before kissing him and then sleeping lightly. Charles moved his arms around her and held on tightly as to not let her go.

"They certainly do." Julie said.
