Although I was blessed as a child, I still led a hard life. Losing my sister in front of my eyes and being completely useless to stop it put a toll on my adulthood. It stripped my innocence with the single pull of that trigger. Darkness consumed my intentions on everything after that.
"Grace."
I snapped out of my trance and glanced down at the scene that laid under me. I scanned the area for any obvious clues and sighed.
"It seems to be a murder suicide." A detective claimed and I immediately shook my head.
"No," I began. "It wasn't. This is a double murder."
"And how can you be so sure detective?" My captain questioned which caused me to beam a smile.
My partner, Evan, rolled his eyes as I slid my gloves on and opened the car door.
"Yes the gun is here. But look at the placement of the hand." I pointed out the fingers were not close to the gun at all. "Also, if they truly shot themselves, they aimed the gun like this." I held my fingers under my chin. "But," I then showed the exit wound of the bullet. "The bullet exited as if I was holding the gun from the opposite direction and pointing down. The entrance was actually the back of the head."
"Good work."
"Wait," I interrupted the praise. "And even if that wasn't accurate and it pictured the perfect suicide, I want you to point out any other flaws."
The other detective climbed in the car slightly and thoroughly inspected the scene for anymore clues.
"I can't seem to find one ma'am."
"Detective Bennett please get to the point." Captain asked and I nodded then cleared my throat.
"Blood would've been splattered on the ceiling of the car. There is no trace evidence at all."
"Which means they had to have been shot somewhere else then planted here." Evan said
"Our killer is sloppy and clumsy." I slid the gun in an evidence bag and labeled it. "I'm sending this to Eva to see what she says in the lab."
"Fingerprints." Evan declared and Captain smirked slightly.
"I'm proud how far you two got together."
"Eh." I shrugged the compliment off and climbed into my car, driving to my house after depositing all the evidence.
I took off my jacket and climbed upstairs to my room. I stripped my clothes off and changed into my pajamas as I climbed into my bed. I looked at my nightstand and saw a photo of my sister in her graduation gown.
She smiled brightly as she clutched the diploma she worked for in her hands. She was set off to go to a medical school when the incident happened.
As I drifted to sleep, my phone rang violently and I struggled to find it. Groggily, I opened my eyes to answer the call when Captain shouted into the phone.
"Grace we need you now. We are on 185 East Street in LA."
I raced to grab my uniform and supplies when I threw my car door open. I stuffed the key into the ignition and raced down the street as fast as I could.
I arrived to Evan in the custody of one of the victim's younger sister and a pistol to his head.
"I need a guarantee that you will find the person who did this!" The girl seemed distraught and looked at me.
"Please listen." I slowly set my gun on the ground and kicked it away from me.
"No!" Tears streamed down her face when I saw one of the police officers pull out their gun.
"No one shoot. Anyone who does will be immediately charged accordingly." I demanded and slowly mad my way towards her.
She was my age. My age when I lost my sister in front of me. She was the same age when I was treated as the criminal and questioned as so.
It brought back the dark memories of losing my sister but it also showed me that I needed to help now. I could finally help now.
"It's okay. I know you're scared. I was too."
"You wouldn't know!"
"I lost my older sister too. She was my best friend. I didn't know what to do and I panicked. They shot her about four times in the head and seven in the chest. They did it right in front of me in only a matter of seconds. I know what it's like to lose your other half. Let me help. It's what they both would have wanted." I laid my hand on hers and felt her fingers tremble.
She let go of the gun and I pulled her into a tight hug as Evan grabbed the weapon from the ground. I embraced her as my sister would whenever I was upset and she melted into my arms. She cried and cried as I comforted her while everyone settled down.
Sometimes personal struggles can shine a light on the path for others to walk on. Darkness is only temporary and it's a gift that others receive in time. Never is it too late to analyze and help others.
