-Chapter Thirteen-

I was finally at the chore of pulling weeds. Likely my least favorite chore of all. Luckily though here in the south we didn't get very may weeds since it was too dry and too hot. Even the flowers barely made it. Cassidy was the one who liked to garden. Here I was though.

On my knees in the mulch pulling the tiny green stinkers out. Though the garden gloves were supposed to keep my hands clean. All it really did was keep any splinters out from under my skin. The dirt though was still wedging it's way under my finger nails.

It was hot out and I was sweating. But listening with my head phones in wasn't bad. It suppressed the grumpiness of my mood.

I did not like de-weeding.  Who does?!

I turned my head though hearing a car pull up. I stood taking off my gloves as Rogers stepped out. Clearly beaming to see me. He almost hopped out with excitement.

"Morning!", he said walking up from the drive way.

"Good morning Rogers", I said coming down the short slope, "What brings you here?", I asked curiously.

He smiled, "I was actually just with my partner he was showing me the neighborhood and a few more routes. Then I saw you out and I told him to stop the car", he said.

I titled my head, "Well, can I offer you guys anything? A drink?", I asked gesturing to my door.

Rogers smiled, "As much as I would love to take a drink I think my pal isn't too happy about this", laughed Rogers.

"You sure?", I asked again.

Rogers waved his hand, "Yeah, yeah, nothing to worry about. But here", he said extending something.

I raised my eyebrows at the piece of paper that he handed to me. I opened it, unfolding the flaps. It looked cheaply made. Likely at the local print shop. The only one in town. But it was colorful. A lot of ink used to make it. The paper was flimsy though. Just regular paper.

"My wife and I are having a neighborly get together. My son. He's having his birthday party and we thought it'd be nice to invite neighbors and their kids. He doesn't really know anyone and neither does my daughter Grace. Since they start school in a few weeks we thought letting them get know a few people before hand would be good", said Rogers.

I smiled, "This sounds great but...", my voice trailed off.

"But?", asked Rogers with raised eyebrows.

"I don't have any kids", I said awkwardly.

Rogers burst out laughing, "That's completely fine! You can invite your friends too. We'll be grilling outside. Burgers and hot dogs", he said.

I puffed up my cheeks filling them with air hearing this.

"Don't tell me that you don't have any friends?", asked Rogers in disbelief.

"What?", I asked. It took me a moment to process what he had said. I shook my head, "No, no, no! I have friends....it's just....my roommates....they're both lesbian", I said.

Rogers raised his eyebrows and he smiled then laughing, "Not a problem. My wife has a few old relatives who are lesbian runs in the family", said Rogers.

"Alright, I just wanted to be sure before I asked them about the invitation", I said smiling. That was a relief.

"I appreciate it. I can't wait to see which bozo shows up who I am not prepared for", said Rogers.

"So can you make it?", he asked.

I looked at the date. June 18th, that was the following Saturday. I had the night shift then. So the afternoon shouldn't be  a problem.

"Yes, yes I can make it....I do have one question though", I said.

"Fire away", replied Rogers.

"What does your future four year old want?", I asked.
